Abstract

The decorative covering for furniture uses the stems of Palmyra creeper which can be mounted around a core formed by a part of the article of furniture. They can form a complete circle and can be secured by nails without splitting, so as to enclose e.g. a chair leg. They can also be used to cover edges, frames etc. of tables, cupboards, shelves, mirrors, wardrobes, chests etc., as well as chairs. The creeper is a tropical variety and the stems are fibrous, having a constant circular cross section having a diameter between 4 and 8 mm, e.g. 6mm, and without knots. It is hard, flexible and homogeneous, and can be bent around a sharp radius without breaking.

Description

The invention relates to a decor for covering and optically embellishing the visible surfaces and edges of the substructure of furniture, in particular the legs and / or the frame parts and / or the body of seating or reclining furniture, tables, cupboards, sideboards, shelves, mirrors and the same.

In all cultural circles and since time immemorial, people have made furniture for their dwelling, which is used to accommodate their belongings, to facilitate their domestic work or to create rest camps or seating. In addition to striving to make their furniture particularly robust and thus durable, people all over the world have always had the desire to give this furniture a pleasing look. The furniture was painted, painted, veneered, covered, upholstered, provided with precious inlays or otherwise covered with suitable decorations.

Decor of this and the type mentioned are known all over the world. Depending on the landscape and the materials naturally present in it, rattan split, reed, corn or rice straw, palm leaves, sisal, jute, rush, rattan, cane, bamboo sticks, wicker or the like are used. The materials mentioned last are known to be relatively brittle and inflexible. They can therefore only be bent slightly, for example at corners or curves of furniture that they are intended to decorate, can hardly be adapted and securely fastened with a satisfactory result. However, this type of attachment often causes the above-mentioned materials to splinter, which can result in the decor not being stuck to the furniture and thus unintentionally falling off or at least protruding from it. It is therefore the aim and purpose of the invention to provide a decor of the aforementioned type which can be applied and fastened to the furniture in order to decorate furniture and to clad its substructure in such a way that the deficiencies listed above are avoided. In addition, the type of arrangement and attachment of the novel decor should give the piece of furniture decorated with it an unobtrusive, modest and at the same time pleasing, elegant and solid appearance.

This object is achieved according to the invention by a large number of wood-like, fiber-like, knotless, highly flexible, more or less long strands made from the pulp or core of a tropical vine plant and having a cross section which is constant over their entire length and which in one position usually runs parallel to one another or lying next to each other, touching each other practically without gaps and thus forming an optically closed cladding on the visible surfaces and edges of the substructure and attached to them by means of fasteners.

According to the invention, the core of the Palmyra liana family is preferably used as the starting material tropical forests, such as Indonesia, is growing.

It has proven to be particularly advantageous according to the invention to make the strands approximately circular in cross-section, most perfectly completely circular. and to measure the diameter of the same with 4 to 8 mm, but preferably with exactly 6 mm. On the one hand, a strand of this size offers the possibility of securely and firmly attaching it to the substructure of a piece of furniture using conventional pins, nails and the like, without the strand itself being damaged as a result of improper work, for example due to off-center attachment of the pins or nails or breaks out. In contrast to the types of wood that grow here in Germany or are otherwise known as furniture woods, the growth nodes mentioned above do not show knotty changes in the liana family, which give the structure of the pulp or core a different appearance or even the mechanical properties of the core at this point or would change advantage. In particular, the core of the Palmyra vine plant is practically completely homogeneous in all respects over the entire length of the latter, particularly with regard to its structure and its relevant physical-mechanical properties: it is extremely tough, very flexible and can therefore be used in relatively small radii bend without - like the known materials - threatening to break or even break.

The reason for these excellent properties lies in the special internal structure of the pulp or cpres of liana plants, such as rattan and especially palmyra, which is different from our woods known in this country. In cross-section, this looks like the cross-section through an animal bone: You can see a myriad of small, cross-sectionally round channels running parallel to the axis along the entire length of the liana in the core. FIGS. 1a to 1d basically show how a strand 1, preferably of cross-sectional shape and made of preferably Palmyra core with a diameter of preferably 6 mm, is fastened to the substructure 2 of a piece of furniture by means of fastening means 3. The fastening means 3 can either be pins (without a head) or nails, which penetrate into the wood of the substructure 2, partly from the lower side of the core stem 1, that is to say not visible, in the position of use. As a result, the attachment is advantageously not visually visible on the one hand. On the other hand, the pins cannot protrude above the core and thus give rise to injuries to persons or damage to clothes, tablecloths or the like. Of course, a strand 1 could also be attached to the substructure 2 from the visible outside of the core strand 1 with the aid of nails or pins, but this would have the disadvantages mentioned. In addition, one would then have to make the nail or pin holes for optical reasons in each case with suitable means, such as paint, wax or the like, close again.

Is noteworthy when installing the invention. Core strands 1, that the first strand, so to speak, must be attached to the substructure 2 mathematically exactly along a very specific line, which can run straight or along a desired curved curve, because the courses of all other SLranks are based on this, as is easy to see is. A whole bundle of core strands 1 also runs along the edge of the table, the ends of which meet at different locations in a single joint, so that it is really difficult to find the individual ends. Just in the corner areas 11 and 12, there are approximately triangular empty fields on the substructure 2, which after the work on covering the legs and the square table frame 13 with the core strands 1 with the help of short core pieces in the example in FIG. ₄ shown are closed.

In principle, similar to table T, the base of an armchair A is covered with core strands 1, as shown in FIG. 7. What is interesting here is the great length of some strands 1 in this piece of furniture: some strands start at the left front leg 14 and run along the armrest 15, the backrest 16, the armrest 17 up to the right front leg 18, where they then end.

With a 3-seater sofa, for example, such strands could be more than 5 m long. If necessary, much longer core strands can be processed, since the Palmyra liana - as mentioned above - grows in practically infinite lengths.

Since the substructure of seating furniture is mostly upholstered in the area of the seat frame, the part of the substructure that is not visible through the upholstery does not of course need to be draped with core strands, as can be seen, for example, from FIG. 16. This is also the case in the area of the arm and backrest, as shown in FIG. 17.

Since a transparent (glass) plate may later be used as a table top in the table frame of table T, the table frame must of course be completely surrounded by core strands, as shown in FIG. ₅ . The table frame has a shoulder for receiving the edge of the table top, so that the latter is immovably stuck in the table frame in the use position.

It should also be noted that the legs of seating or tables are spherical if possible and can be provided with glides or castors if necessary.

The following should also be noted about the assembly: After setting the fastening pins along the desired line, the underside is coated with core Strands are placed in the center of the pins and carefully tapped on the pins until they are flush with the substructure. After the work is done, the core strands are wrapped tightly around for a day to set or let the glue dry.

Before finishing the decor, the glue residues are removed after the tapes have been removed. The surface of the core strands is then pre-cleaned, washed, stained in the desired color, varnished colorless and finally sanded with fine steel wool.

The special structure of the Palmyra core means that the latter is very absorbent when raw, so that the paint stain can penetrate deeply. The core material takes on the color differently because it has slightly different transmission values. The core shimmers from natural color to brown.

Finally, it should be noted that the core strands on the legs of tables or seating furniture are not brought all the way down to the sole of the same, so as not to become the supporting part of the legs unintentionally. The core strands could detach from the substructure or even break off.

In the system, a model of a corner of a table with the decor according to the invention is attached as a tangible example of a preferred embodiment of the subject matter of the invention and to clarify the same. The model shows the arrangement of the Palmyra core strands described above after their attachment to the substructure, but before the finishing, the so-called _F innish, to complete the decor according to the invention.

The substructure has a profile with a rounded cross-section in the area of the table leg, which is preferably oval in the attached model. In the area of the table frame, the substructure is also rounded on the outside, while on the inside of the frame it is provided with a shoulder as a support for a table top to be used later. Since the table top can possibly also be transparent, the substructure of the table frame is also completely covered with the decor according to the invention in the area of the mentioned paragraph.

As the model shows and as claimed and described above, preferably round Palmyra core strands, preferably 6 mm in diameter, are used to cover the substructure of the table, which are attached to the substructure using glue and pins that are not visible from the outside . Since the core strands, as described above, each run from the sole of a table leg to the sole of an adjacent table leg, the table legs (like the legs of the seating furniture according to FIGS. 6, 10, 14) each have an even number ( here for example 34) of core strands. This number depends on how strong a leg has to be in terms of the load it has to absorb, whether it is a smaller or larger table, an armchair or a 2 or 3-seater sofa.

As will be easy to see, the outer circumference of the substructure of a leg must be dimensioned exactly so that an even number of core strands with a diameter of 6 mm can be arranged and attached to it. The dimensioning in particular of the substructure of the legs of furniture which are to be covered with the decor according to the invention therefore requires great care in order to achieve the desired homogeneity for the decor, as shown by the cross section through the leg of the attached model.
