Abstract
A protein-containing feed product, which is primarily intended as food for domestic animals, containing meat and/or meat by-products and/or other nutritive protein- containing material and has a moisture content in the range of 24-45 per cent by weight, a pH value in the range of 4.0 to 7.0, and a content of sufficiently water- soluble preservative material to make the product bacteriologically stable by reduction of the product's water activity. The product is characterized in that it contains sodium alginate or another alginic acid derivative, which is cross-linked by means of a divalent or polyvalent cation to achieve a gel structure. The product generally contains between 0.3 and 3.0 per cent by weight of alginate. The feed product is obtained by adding sodium alginate or another alginic acid derivative to a mixture containing meatlike or other nutritive protein-containing material, moisture and water-soluble materials which are able to make the product bacteriologically stable by reduction of its water activity. After this, the mixture is heated for pasteurization and turned into a gel by incorporation of a divalent or polyvalent cation in the mixture of ingredients. The feed product thus obtained is solid and not sticky, despite its high water content, thanks to the use of alginate for which reason which is attractive to animals.
