Abstract

Method and apparatus for measuring the mass of a liquid flow, for example, a milk stream in a milking layout. The apparatus is of the type where the liquid being measured is introduced into a measuring chamber 20 via a liquid inlet channel 11, from which the liquid is emptied in batches via a liquid outlet channel 12. The cumulative mass or weight of the liquid flow is then determined by multiplying the number of batches by the mass or weight of the individual batch. The emptying operation is controlled by means of flow elements 21, 22, which are arranged inside the measuring chamber and move in it together with the liquid level. The flow elements contain a magnet 25, which can activate reed relays 26, which are arranged at various levels in the measuring chamber. In order to achieve a quick emptying of liquid from the measuring chamber and thus a high capacity for the measuring apparatus, each of the liquid batches is emptied from the measuring chamber by applying a gas pressure which substantially exceeds the pressure at the outlet end 13 of the outlet channel 12. The measuring chamber can be partly blocked off by a bell-shaped valve body 15, which controls the inlet opening 16, 17 of the measuring chamber, and which can move into its locked position under action of the gas pressure, which can be atmospheric pressure, for example, which is supplied by means of a valve 29, controlled by the relays 26. The apparatus can have special elements for measuring of a last fraction of a liquid batch and elements to reduce the formation of foam in the measuring chamber. <IMAGE>
