For outdoor use, it is known to enclose lamp sockets, e.g. for lamp shades, in protective casings molded around the socket and its leads, and to place an elastic sealing ring between the bulb and the socket, 5 so that the socket's live metal parts are protected from water ingress which could cause short circuits and corrosion. or impossible to repair as the inner parts cannot be accessed without damaging the socket.

The invention relates to a protective sheath for a lampshade for outdoor use and is intended to provide such a protective sheath which can be separated and yet provides good sealing against the penetration of water.

This object is achieved by the protective sheath being designed as defined in the characterizing part of claim 1. Such a sleeve can be used with a conventional lamp mount of the kind intended for indoor use, and by compressing the cylindrical portion and the bottom portion without turning these parts relative to each other, an effective seal is established between two parts between each other and between these and the pipes. The squeeze on these also causes special measures to relieve strain.

The configuration of the protective sheath 25 as claimed in claim 2 is specially designed for use in connection with circular cross-section wires.

In FIG. 1, 10 denotes a conventional lamp mount consisting of a pipe piece 11 containing a thread not shown and a screwed bottom piece 12 therein containing electrodes for contacting the lamp thread and center electrode.

5 In the base piece 12 is drilled a diametrical, through hole 13, which permits the passage of a garland line in which the lamp socket is to be hung and to which the electrodes of the base piece are connected. A lamp 14 with a base 15 is shown in the socket.

10 Outside of the lamp socket 10 is provided a protective casing, which is generally designated 20, consisting of a cylindrical portion 21 and a bowl-shaped bottom portion 22, both made of a relatively soft, elastic material, e.g. rubber or plastic. The two parts 21 and 22 are both formed 15 having a longitudinal edge 23 and 24, respectively, whose abutment faces are slightly tapered, which helps to make the joint completely tight when the two abutment faces are tightened by means of screws not shown. passing through smooth axial holes in one flange and into threaded holes 20 in the other flange.

At this tension, an elastic sealing ring 25 is also clamped between the end edge of the lamp piece 10's pipe piece 11 and an inward-facing edge flange 26 on the outer end edge of the protective sleeve 20's cylindrical portion 21.

From the hole 13 in the base piece 12 of the lamp holder, radial, through-cut recesses 27 of semi-circular cross-section are formed in the abutment surfaces between the flanges 23 and 24 at two diametrically opposed locations. These recesses form pairs of cylindrical holes for receiving the conduit passing through the hole 13 having the dual function of carrying the lamp holder with lamp and protective sleeve and supplying the lamp. The recesses 27 are so dimensioned that they clamp the cord together by clamping the two parts 21 and 22 of the protective sleeve 20 so that an effective sealing of the lead-throughs is obtained while at the same time obtaining a clamping of the cord which unnecessarily another form of strain relief.

The bottom part 22 is shown formed with an outer tab 28 which can serve as a holding grip or for mounting or hanging the lamp or the like.

The protective sheath 20 need not be designed exactly as shown in the drawing and described above.

It can, of course, be adapted for use with other types of lamp sockets. The clamping of the two parts can also take place in ways other than those indicated above, e.g. by means of loose clamping means.
