Abstract
Trickle filters (13) comprising microorganism-colonised packings (17) serve for the biological purification of exhaust air. The microorganisms are constantly irrigated with a liquid. In this case, their surface is covered by a liquid film. This decreases the biodegradation efficiency of known trickle filters (13). According to the invention, the microorganisms of the trickle filter (13) are only irrigated to the extent that they are moist in the interior, but their surface is not wetted by the irrigation liquid. As a result, the exhaust air to be purified receives direct contact with the microorganisms which has as a consequence an increased biodegradation efficiency of the pollutants contained in the exhaust air. The process according to the invention is particularly suitable for removing water-insoluble contaminants from exhaust air of industrial processes. <IMAGE>
