Das Trocknen von Papierbahnen geht so vor sich, daß das Papier über mehrere hintereinander angeordnete Trockenzylinder läuft, die mit Dampf beheizt werden. Der Wirkungsgrad dieser Trockenzylinder ist nicht groß und wird immer geringer, je mehr derTrockenvorgang fortgeschritten ist. Für den ersten Trockenzylinder kann man mit einem Wirkungsgrad von etwa 70°/o rechnen. Für die in Richtung des Arbeitsprozesses weiter rückwärts liegenden Zylinder wird der Wirkungsgrad immer geringer und kann bei dem letzten Zylinder bis auf etwa ioo/o absinken.Method for drying paper webs or the like. Durch eine solche Kühlung wird die Verdampfung des in der Papierbahn noch enthaltenen Wassers außerordentlich gefördert, und wie sich gezeigt hat, wird dadurch der Wirkungsgrad der nachgeschalteten Trockenzylinder wesentlich verbessert. Unter Umständen ist es demzufolge möglich, die Zahl der Trockenzylinder überhaupt zu verringern. Die Kühlung kann in beliebiger, auch an sich bekannter Weise erfolgen, z. B. mittels Rohrschlangen, die von kaltem Wasser durchflossen werden. Auch kann die Papierbahn an Rohrschlangen vorbeigeführt werden, in denen, wie von Absorptions- oder Kompressionskühlschränken her bekannt, ein Kühlmittel zirkuliert. Die Kühleinrichtung kann schließlich zur Vergrößerung der Wirkung gekapselt sein, so daß !die Papierbahn einen geschlossenen Raum durchläuft, in dem eine entsprechend niedrige Temperatur herrscht. Dabei muß für eine ausreichende Belüftung dieses Raums, d. h. für eine ständige Erneuerung der mit Wasserdampf angereicherten Luft gesorgt werden.
