Description
Process for the Polymerization of Lactams It has been found that lactams by the action of sulfur trioxide in a technically simple manner for polymerization can be brought.
While with the common methods of polymerization of lactams As is known, temperatures of over 200 ° must be used, the polymerization can be carry out according to the present procedure at significantly lower temperatures, and preferably in a temperature range from -10 to 100 °, namely at Temperatures between 0 and 70 °.
The reaction is usually carried out in an inert solvent. Suitable solvents are, for. ß. liquid sulfur dioxide or sulfuric acid.
Man erhält 15o Gerichtsteile Polymerisat. Man erhält 16o Gewichtsteile Polymerisat. The polymerization is effected either in such a way that the sulfur trioxide is introduced into the solution of the lactam or that the lactam is dissolved in a solution of sulfur trioxide in a suitable solvent, e.g. B. sulfuric acid. The progress of the polymerization can easily be controlled by means of the increasing viscosity of the solution. Among the lactams which can be polymerized in a technically simple manner according to the present process are, for. B. named: Caprolactam, Methylcaprolactam, Ethylcaprolactam and Onantholactam. Example i Parts by weight of caprolactam are dissolved in parts by weight of sulfur dioxide in Zoo at −20 ° under a nitrogen atmosphere. 150 parts by weight of sulfur trioxide are introduced into this solution. The mixture is then heated to 60 ° for 80 hours under pressure. After the sulfur dioxide has been distilled off, the reaction product is neutralized with a 60% own aqueous ammonia solution. The polymer precipitates out as a white precipitate. After filtering off, the polymer is washed salt-free with water. 150 parts of the polymerizate are obtained. 48 parts by weight of monomeric lactam are recovered from the mother liquor. Example e 200 parts by weight of caprolactam are dissolved with stirring and cooling under a nitrogen atmosphere at 30 ° in 250 parts by weight of oleum with a content of 65% free SO2. When standing at room temperature, the viscosity of the solution soon increases. After 8 days, the mixture is worked up in the manner described in Example. 160 parts by weight of polymer are obtained. 37 parts by weight of monomeric lactam can be isolated from the mother liquor.
The polymers obtainable by this process can, for. B. find use for the production of textile fibers.
