The invention relates to a device for stuffing cigarette tobacco into prefabricated cigarette tubes, preferably filter cigarette tubes, with a funnel-shaped tobacco storage container provided with a tobacco cutting and dosing device at the mouth and a tobacco rod forming device arranged below the storage container, whereby the forming device and dosing device can be actuated via a drive device.

With such cigarette rolling machines it is necessary that the amount of tobacco fed into the tobacco rod forming device corresponds exactly to the amount of tobacco required to fill the cigarettes and that is processed and discharged by the forming device.

A cigarette filling device of the type mentioned above is known from US-PS 2,633,133. A rotating shaft with several fingers is provided for cutting up the tobacco ball in the storage container, whereby the fingers reach through slots in a stripping plate when the shaft is rotated, grab tobacco fibers from the ball and feed them to the tobacco rod forming device. With this largely satisfactory tobacco cutting and dosing device, however, it can easily happen that tobacco contamination, which is often present in the form of thick tobacco stalks or parts thereof, jams such thicker parts in the slots of the stripping plate and leads to the entire device being blocked.

In the case of hand-operated cigarette rolling machines, the blockage can usually be removed by slightly turning the shaft backwards and the thicker tobacco pieces can be removed manually if necessary. However, for machines that operate largely automatically and continuously make several cigarettes one after the other, such a malfunction is not acceptable, since on the one hand reverse rotation cannot be provided for in such motor-driven machines and on the other hand

In practice, it has also been found that this type of tobacco cutting results in the tobacco fibers becoming very individual, which is essentially undesirable for a continuous tobacco rod to be placed in a cigarette tube. The quality of the finished cigarette is greatly affected by this, as a cigarette filling that is not continuous tends to crumble when the cigarette is smoked.

The invention is therefore based on the object of designing the tobacco cutting and dosing device of a cigarette filling machine in such a way that, on the one hand, tobacco admixtures ^{such as} tobacco stalks do not lead to blockages and, on the other hand, the tobacco fibers are only separated to the extent necessary for the continuous feeding and filling of cigarettes.

This object is achieved according to the invention in that the tobacco cutting and dosing device is arranged in a slot-shaped opening formed at the lower end of the storage container and is designed as a knife shaft.

Further advantageous embodiments of the invention are explained in more detail in claims 2 to 5.

The advantages achieved with the invention consist in particular in the fact that the tobacco present in the storage container in connected balls is fed by the tobacco cutting and dosing device to the tobacco rod production device only in such a way that it is cut up to the extent necessary for the continuous production of tobacco rods that are as connected as possible for insertion into empty cigarette tubes.

Thicker tobacco stems, which may be present in the tobacco supply, are cut through by the cutting edges of the dosing device and therefore do not cause any disruption to the continuous operation of the device.

Furthermore, by adjusting the slot width of the storage container mouth, it is easily possible to adjust the amount of tobacco conveyed through the cutting and dosing device to the tobacco rod forming device and thus also to adapt it to different tobacco structures (fine, medium, coarse).

The cigarette filling device shown in the figures consists essentially of the funnel-shaped tobacco storage container 1, under which a tobacco storage space 2 (intermediate storage) is provided, the tobacco rod forming device 3 and the filling tube it.

For the sake of clarity, the device is shown here without an external casing. The process for making cigarettes is as follows:

After tobacco has been filled into the storage container 1, the device is started and an empty cigarette tube 5 is first pushed onto the filling tube k . At the same time, tobacco is transported from the storage container 1 into the intermediate storage unit 2 and to the tobacco rod forming device 3 arranged at the base of the latter. This is done by means of the tobacco cutting and dosing shaft 6 according to the invention, which is explained in more detail below.

forms a continuous tobacco rod and pushes it through the filling tube k into the cigarette tube. As the tube is filled, it is gradually pushed down the filling tube until the finished cigarette is available. The drive of the tobacco rod forming device is then stopped until a new empty tube is pushed onto the filling tube.

The tobacco cutting and dosing shaft 6 is provided in order to transport the tobacco from the storage container 1, in which it is usually present in connected balls, in a shredded (unstreaked) form to the intermediate storage unit 2 and thus to the tobacco rod forming device 3.

The storage container is provided at its lower end with a slot-shaped mouth 7, in the passage area of which this liter 6 is arranged.

The cutting and dosing unit is preferably designed as a knife shaft, with the cutting edges 6 being provided in a spiral shape on this shaft. Viewed in the direction of rotation of the shaft, tobacco receiving recesses in the form of bowl-shaped longitudinal grooves 9 are formed in front of the cutting edges. The side walls IQ of the lower end of the storage container in the area of the knife shaft are adjustably attached to the upper funnel wall 11, so that the passage gap between the measuring shaft and the side wall can be adjusted. The dosing unit 6 and the tobacco rod forming device 3 are driven by a drive motor 13 by means of a gear train 12. This ensures the inevitable, quantitative allocation of the tobacco conveyed from the storage container to the filling device and the tobacco processed by the farm device and discharged into the filling tube.

When the dosing shaft rotates, tobacco from the storage container is taken up (captured) by the recesses 9 of the bell and transported through the passage gap into the intermediate storage 2, ie to the forming device 3. The gap width can be adjusted so that the cutting edges 8 interacting with the side walls 10 cut through and separate protruding thicker tobacco balls, so that the tobacco reaches the forming device that has been shredded to a level suitable for processing. The volume of the recesses 9 ensures that the tobacco is not shredded and cut too finely. The cutting edges also ensure that coarse tobacco admixtures such as thicker stems etc. are cut and do not lead to clogging and blocking of the device.
