Das Aeschern, welches in der Gerberei darin besteht, dafs man die rohen Häute der Einwirkung von Kalkmilch aussetzt, um die Haare in den Poren zu lockern, damit sie alsdann leicht abgeschabt werden können, wurde bisher in der Weise vorgenommen, dafs man die Häute in einer mit Kalkmilch angefüllten Grube so lange ruhig hängen liefs, bis die Haarwurzeln genügend angegriffen waren. Dieses Verfahren nahm lange Zeit in Anspruch und aufserdem mufsten hierbei die Häute noch häufig aufgeschlagen werden, was den mit Kalkmilch getränkten Häuten wegen der Einwirkung der Luft sehr schädlich war und aufserdem bei den Arbeitern spröde Hände verursachte.The ashing, which in tannery consists in removing the raw hides from the action of lime milk to loosen the hair in the pores so that they can then can be easily scraped off, has hitherto been done by removing the skins in a pit filled with milk of lime left to hang quietly until the hair roots were attacked enough.
