Description

Method of etching chrome-plated metallic objects For attachment of characters and the like on metallic objects are often used etching with the help of suitable liquids. For this purpose solutions of ferric chloride, common of copper salts, selenium compounds and the like. The composition these fluids depend on the type of metallic material to be etched away. When trying to use chrome-plated pieces in this usual technical way These etchants fail to provide characters and the like because the chrome is resistant to most chemical attacks. Nonetheless, there is often the need to provide chrome-plated parts with characters and to follow the usual way of etching.

It has now been found that the chrome layer with the usual Etchants can be etched when the chromium is out of the passive state in which it is normally located, is temporarily placed in the active state. That The chromium is activated by placing the workpiece in a hydrogen-separating one Acid, for example in dilute sulfuric acid, and with a base metal, for example zinc. The occurrence of the active state can be recognized by that hydrogen bubbles form on the chromium layer. The piece is now removed from solution, washed and etched in the usual way. As a caustic liquid have preferably acidified selenium-containing solutions of copper and others Heavy metal salts proved to be suitable. After the etching work has been carried out, this can be done Piece can be put back into the passive state by briefly turning it into the passive state Exposure to concentrated nitric acid.
