Daß die bleichende Wirkung der Erde sich auf diese Weise steigern ließ, war nicht vorauszusehen. Bisslang wurde allgemein angenommen, daß idie Bleichwirkung von Bleicherde durch die Gegenwart von Wasser in erheblichem Maße 'beeinträchtigt wird. In gleicher Weise beeinfiußt die vorgeschlagene Behandlung die ,Stärke des Geruches. Die so erhaltenen !Öle weisen einen. Geruch auf, -der wesentlich schwächer ist als derjenige der Fette, die nach den bislang üblichen Verfahren aus,der Mis,oella gewonnen wurden. Ausführungsbeispiel i ooo ccm einer xlurch Extraktion von Heringen mit Methylenchlorid gewonnenen Miseella werden durch kräftiges Rühren mit Bleicherde (z. B. -3 % auf den ölgehalt gerechnet) vermischt. Dann wird die Mischung, ohne die @Miscella durch Filtration von der Erde zu trennen, in eine Diestillzerblase gebracht, mit 25o ccm Wasser versetzt und unter Einleiten von Wasserdampf das Lösungsmittel auf dem Wasserbad abgetrieben. Nach Ausireibhung ödes Lösungsmittels tritt eine scharfe Trennung zwischen dem Fett und zier bleicherdehaltigeri Wasserschicht ein. Das so gewonnene Fett ist von hellgelber Farbe und -äußerst schwachem Geruch.
