Bei Abgaslufterhitzern, die aus gußeisernen oder schmiedeeisernen Rippenrohren oder besser aus kupfernen Rohren mit schmiedeeisernen Rippen bestehen, muß die Ausdehnung der Rohre berücksichtigt werden.. Man walzt deshalb in üblicher Weise die Rohre zu Bündeln beiderseits in sogenannten Rohrplatten ein, wovon eine am Rand geschwächt ist, um bei der Ausdehnung des Rohrbündels nachzugeben. Auch läßt man die Rohre nach einer anderen Bauart auf einer Seite in Stopfbüchsen gleiten. Beide Hilfsmittel sind aber unzureichend für eine dauerhafte gasdichte Verbindung.
