Besonders schwierig gestalten sich die Verhältnisse bei der Herstellung der sogenannten hochaktiven feinkörnigen oder pulverförmigen Absorptions- oder Entfärbungskohlen. Die Herstellung geht hierbei meist so vor sich, daß irgendein vegetabilischer Stoff oder Mischungen von solchen Stoffen, wie Sägemehl, Torf, Braunkohle, gemahlene Knochen usw., mit einem Imprägnierungsmittel, wie Säuren, Salzlösungen, Alkalien, oder auch einfach mit Wasser gemischt und dann der Ver-1;ohlung bei.bestimmten Temperaturen unterworfen werden. Diese Mischungen von meist verhältnismäßig leichten vegetabilischen Stoffen, wie z. B. Sägemehl, mit irgendeiner Lösung ergeben meist eine Masse, die sehr zum Anbacken neigt. B. zum Entfernen des Aktivierungsmittels benutzt wird, wobei es in die für Entfärbungskohle besonders bevorzugte feinkörnige Form zerfällt. Die formgebende Vorbehandlung kann z. B. durchgeführt werden, indem man die Mischung durch eine Strangpresse laufen läßt und zu Materialsträngen oder Fäden preßt, oder indem man das Material durch eine Brikettiermaschine oder Pastillenpresse gibt. Diese einfache Maßnahme ermöglicht die Durchführung derartiger Prozesse im Drehofen oder in kontinuierlich beschickten Retorten.
