Description
Silencer. for internal combustion engines Addendum to patent ¢ 73 812 The main patent describes a muffler which consists of two spiral-shaped housings arranged next to one another. The exhaust gases are fed in and discharged along the central axis, while they are diverted from one housing to the other on the outer circumference. The present invention serves to further improve this muffler.
According to the invention, at least one of the spirals is designed so that the cable cross-sections of the volute casing are alternately larger and smaller.
In the figures, an embodiment of the invention is shown. Fig. Z shows a section through the volute casing in the direction A-A, Fig. 2 a such in the direction B-B. The outer housing wall is denoted by z. By a partition 2 divides the housing into two approximately equal spaces. In the intermediate wall an opening 3 is provided through which the gases from the one Being able to step into the other spiral. The spirals themselves are through partition walls 4 and 5 formed perpendicular to the intermediate wall 2 and the outer housing wall z are arranged. The housing has an opening on the side facing the motor 6 and a flange 7. The opening B serves as an exhaust for the gases. The flow path the gases is essentially the same as in the main patent. In contrast to however, the muffler according to the present invention is somewhat of one of these elongated shape. Since the spiral walls 4 and 5 have the same thickness everywhere, conditionally this form an alternating increasing and decreasing of the distance between the partition walls 4 or: 5 and thus the cable cross-section of the volute casing. Through this shape an alternating expansion and contraction of the exhaust gases is achieved, which results in strong sound absorption and good cooling. The exhaust spiral ends as in the main patent in a space g, into which the exhaust gases enter tangentially and they move in an essentially perpendicular direction with weak eddies leaving.
