Description

For scientific and medical purposes (structural studies, surface therapy) it is desirable to use soft X-rays. Such soft X-rays are referred to as boundary rays if their mean wavelength is between about 1.5 and 3.1 Angstrom units; they are already very strongly absorbed by the glass wall of ordinary X-ray tubes, so that the spectrum of the X-ray light passing through appears to be limited towards longer wavelengths. In order to weaken the intensity of this long-wave portion of the X-ray radiation generated in an X-ray tube as little as possible, the tube wall must be made of a material at least at the point where the X-rays pass through, which absorbs this long-wave X-ray radiation little. It is known that Lindemann's lithium beryllium borate glass is used for this purpose, but the production of thin layers from this glass is very difficult.

According to the invention, the soft X-ray becomes less than one Fluoroberyllate glass absorbent material used. Its most important part is beryllium fluoride next to lithium fluoride. These only recently became known Glasses are more suitable for the production of thin walls than Lindemann's Borate glass and can with a coating, which is insensitive to the humidity is, such as B. by collodion, are protected against moisture. For this Fluoride glasses can cover the entire X-ray tube glass body as well as windows are manufactured, which in X-ray tube bodies made of other material (ordinary Glass, metal or porcelain).
