KAISERLICHES PATENTAMT Die nachstehend beschriebene Erfindung bildet eine Neuerung an der im Patente No. 38011 beschriebenen Bearbeitungsweise der Metalle unter ,unmittelbarer Anwendung des elektrischen Lichtbogens. Erzeugt man nämlich den zur Metallbearbeitung verwendeten Lichtbogen in einem starken magnetischen Felde, so wird die Form des Lichtbogens schlanker, derselbe erlischt weniger leicht und seine Wirkung wird concentrirter. Man kann daher in einem starken magnetischen Felde mit demselben Aufwand an elektrischer Energie in kürzerer Zeit gröfsere Arbeitsmengen erledigen, als ohne dieses Hülfsmittel. Infolge der concentrirten Wirkung des Lichtbogens schmilzt das Metall rascher und gleichmäfsiger, bildet weniger Blasen und seine Oberfläche wird glatter; das minder häufige Aufhören des Lichtbogens ermöglicht eine gleichförmigere Art der Arbeit. Ein starkes magnetisches Feld wird bei dieser Bearbeitungsweise der Metalle gewöhnlich dadurch hergestellt, dafs man das zu bearbeitende Werkstück auf einen eisernen Ambos oder Werktisch legt, welcher von einer Anzahl Windungen des biegsamen Kabels umgeben ist, durch welches man den zur Arbeit verwendeten Strom von der Elektricitätsquelle zum Kohlenhalter leitet. Gelegentlich wird es genügen, das Werkstück selbst mit einem vom Arbeitsstrom oder von einem fremden Strom durchflossenen Solenoid zu umgeben. In anderen Fällen wird man auf der Rückseite des zu bearbeitenden Metalles, dem Lichtbogen gegenüber, einen kräftig wirkenden transportablen Elektromagneten anbringen.
