Die eisernen Trittstangen e und e\ die in den Augen c und c¹ mit dem Seil verbunden sind und die Trittbretter α und a^l tragen, laufen mit Holzfütterung in zwei hölzernen Rinnen, deren Innenräume s und s¹ an ihren den Walzen zugekehrten Seitenwänden mit je einem Spalt ν und v¹ versehen sind, in denen sich die Augen c und c¹ auf- und niederbewegen. H und H¹ sind zwei nach Art eines Recks verbundene verstellbare Holme, die dem Uebenden zur Stütze dienen, g ist ein dem Rahmen K angefügter Schemel zum bequemeren Betreten des Gera'thes. Da die Augen c und c¹ sich in einem Abstand von 4 cm von den gemeinschaftlichen Berührungsebenen der beiden Walzen bewegen, so entstehen in dem Seil Spannungsdifferenzen. Denn bekanntlich hat der Umfang des gleichschenkligen Dreiecks unter allen über derselben Grundlinie mit gleicher Höhe errichteten Dreiecken den kleinsten Werth. Deshalb entsteht jedesmal, wenn die beiden Augen c und c¹ in der Mitte zwischen den Walzen stehen, die kleinste Spannung. Werden nun beide Augen aus dieser Lage durch Niedertreten einer Stufe entfernt, so hat dies ein stetiges Wachsen der Seilspannung zur Folge, so dafs bei der Stellung der Stufen, wie dieselbe in den Zeichnungen angegeben ist, die gröfste Spannung eintritt. Dieser Spannungszuwachs mufs durch das ihm entsprechende Körpergewicht des Uebenden überwunden werden, um die Stufen wieder in die erste Lage zurückbringen zu können. Die Einrichtung der beweglichen Walze dient dazu, die Spannung ändern zu können, um so den Apparat für Personen von verschiedenem Körpergewicht brauchbar zu machen. Zugleich bietet diese bewegliche Walze ein Mittel dar, die Tritthöhe in jedem gewünschten Mafse zu verringern. Man braucht zu diesem Zweck nur die Seilspannung so zu vergröfsern, dafs der Uebende nicht mehr im Stande ist, die Stufen ganz niederzudrücken.The course of the apparatus is such that when one step is stepped on, the other rises upwards, and the height to climb or step is 30 cm, corresponding to the distance between the two rollers.
