Die Kreismesserpaare bestehen aus einem scheibenförmigen Obermesser und einem topfförmigen Untermesser, das teilweise von den Bahnen umschlungen ist, wobei die Schneidkanten beider Messer beim Schneiden sich gegenseitig berühren und so einem erhöhten Verschleiß unterliegen. Um die Standzeiten der Kreismesserpaare zu erhöhen, ist aus der EP-02 97 399 B1 ein Kreismesserpaar mit einem gattungsgemäßen Obermesser bekannt, dessen Schneidkante aus einem abriebfesten und harten Material besteht. Das Obermesser weist einen scheibenförmigen Grundkörper 1 mit einer zentralen Bohrung 2 auf, mit der es über ein auf einem Zapfen befestigtes Lager geschoben und an diesem befestigt wird. Die Schneidkante 5 wird einerseits von der Schneidseite 3 und andererseits von einer Druckfläche 6 gebildet, die stumpfwinklig abgeschrägt zur Rückenseite 4 verläuft. Es entsteht so ein Druckwinkel β zwischen der Druckfläche 6 und der senkrechten zur Schneidseite 3, der zwischen 3° und 15° beträgt.
