Der größte Teil der Kohlensäure läßt sich durch Auswaschen beseitigen. Am bequemsten geschieht dies in den Faulräumen selbst, indem man das über dem faulenden Schlamm -stehende Wasser erneuert. Die Waschwirkung des im Faulraum befindlichen Wassers ist um so stärker, je weniger Kohlensäure in dem Wasser enthalten ist, und zwar kommt es darauf an, daß namentlich die oberste Wasserschicht, die von den aufsteigenden Gasblasen zuletzt durchlaufen wird, am wenigsten. Kohlensäure enthält.
