Description
Process for extracting lignin from lignin-containing cellulose fibers, Wood etc. with phenols. It is known that lignin is soluble in phenol, in particular in the presence of strong acids. But experiments have shown that the solubility of lignin is considerably larger in certain derivatives of phenol. As little Alkyistl) substituted phenols have proven effective; the polyvalent ones are more effective Phenols. The greatest increase in solubility occurs when certain groups, like the nitro group, halogen or carboxyvl except one or more phenolis: hetn H -, - drox '# - 1 are present in the benzene ring. In the presence of two or more hydroxyl groups also do not interfere with alk_vl groups in the ring. Instead of simple benzene derivatives those of naphthalene, diphenyl, etc. can also be used. By addition. Acids or free halogens can generally increase solubility.
The above observations are of technical importance too than it does with some of the compounds mentioned that turn into the above Arrange rows. In contrast to phenol, thin liquid solutions are possible contain more than 5 percent lignin.
For example, lignin can be extracted from coniferous wood by treatment with the double Amount of 1) -chlorophenol easily dissolve at about 100 ° C without affecting the cellulose or their accompanying substances, apart from lignin, attacked «alder.
Carrying out the process in the presence of free halogens has surprisingly shown that phenol itself and cresol are also present in the presence of free halogen, e.g. B. of chlorine, is a good solvent for lignin, while, As is known, phenol without additives has only a moderate dissolving effect. By the Introducing chlorine, chlorophenol is formed, and the effect of chlorophenol is supported by the presence of free chlorine. Also this form of execution of the process offers considerable advantages.
