Die einzelnen im Abwasser enthaltenen frischen Schlammteile kommen während des Absinkens in innigste Berührung mit Teilen des guten Schlammes, und das Schlammgemisch, das schließlich durch die an der Sohle des Absitzbeckens befindlichen Schlitze in den Faulraum kommt, ist bereits so mit den Fermenten der Methangärung angereichert, daß dieser Schlamm im Faulraum sogleich den Weg der gewollten Methangärung beschreitet, ohne zuerst der sauren Gärung anheimzufallen. Durch rechtzeitiges und häufig wiederholtes Einpumpen von gutem alten Schlamm in den Zulauf von neu in Betrieb genommenen Emscherbrunnen kann die Einarbeitungszeit beliebig verkürzt und sogar vollständig vermieden werden. 0 Schlammteile, die in der Schwimmdecke des Faulraums eines Emscherbrunnens -festsitzen, werden von dem in der beschriebenen Weise zugeführten Impfschlamm nicht berührt.
