Safety tread sole (1) for mountaineering boots, with a tread surface (2) and a heel (3) which both have, on an edge strip (4) following the outer contour of the sole (1), edge studs (5) tapering towards the longitudinal centre axis of the sole (1), the edge studs (5) being separated from one another by groove-shaped notches, and an edge stud (8) in the form of an annular segment being provided in the region of the boot toe (7), characterised in that the edge studs (5, 8) themselves are designed as undivided blocks with essentially smooth surfaces, and the notches between the blocks are designed as wide depressions (11), the side surfaces of which extend up to the blocks in the form of slopes of low inclination and, when the sole is in use, form oblique supporting surfaces for the base, the angle of slope (alpha) measured relative to the sole plane amounting to between 45 and 60 degrees, and in that the edge stud (8) in the form of an annular segment is supplemented to form an elliptical segment and extends underneath the ball of the foot on the foot inside (6), and the angle of taper (beta) between the blocks is 5 to 15 degrees.
