Abstract

The converter comprises an outer shell (5) which defines with an inner shell or basket (B) an annular inlet passage (36) for reactant gases introduced via inlet (12). A heat exchange section (25) is provided at the end of the shell (B), opposite the inlet (12). Reactant gases from inlet (12) flow through passage (36) to section (25) where the gases are pre-heated by tubes (42) therein. The tubes (42) receive the hot effluent from the first catalyst bed (114) via a gas transfer section (34) defined between spaced walls (22,24). Pre-heated gases from sections (25) are fed to the top of the bed (114) also via the gas transfer section (34). Effluent gas from tubes (42) then re-enters transfer section (34) and flows into a pipe (44) which feeds the effluent gas downwardly into second catalyst bed (122). Effluent gas from the bottom of bed (122) flows upwardly between walls (124-126) separating bed (122) from the third bed (128), and thence into the top of bed (128). Product is removed from the bottom of bed (128) via pipe (68) and outlet (14). Low pressure drop and maximum conversion per pass since gases pass through all the catalyst in reactor.
