Befindet sich der Kolben c in seiner tiefsten Lage, so ist das Ventil α geöffnet und gestattet dem Wasser freien Durchgang. Hört der Druck von oben auf den Kolben auf, so wird das Ventil durch den Wasserdruck geschlossen, jedoch ganz langsam, da zugleich der Kolben in die Höhe zu drücken ist, wobei das Gegengewicht mitwirkt. Durch den engen Spielraum des Zwischenventils b kann nur wenig Wasser unter den Kolben dringen, weshalb derselbe nur langsam in die Höhe geht und dadurch den schnellen Schlufs des Ventils hindert.
