A short catheter comprises a tube (10) with a proximal end attachment (11), a hollow needle (18) which can be pushed through the tube, and needle attachment. The latter has a projection which extends into the catheter attachment. A protective member (22) is located over the needle in the catheter attachment, with a hole for needle. The protective member is axially tensioned and axial expansion is prevented.

Description

KurzkatheterShort catheter

The invention relates to a short catheter in which the needle inserted into the catheter tube is rendered unusable by a needle guard after it is pulled out.

Short catheters are also known as venous catheters or IV catheters. They have a flexible catheter tube with a catheter hub at one end. A hollow needle is inserted into the catheter tube, which has a cutting needle tip at the distal end and a needle hub at the proximal end. The needle and the catheter tube surrounding it are inserted into the patient's body using the needle tip. After the tip of the catheter tube has penetrated a vein, the needle is withdrawn.

Der Nadelschutz besteht aus einer metallischen elastischen Klemme, die in dem Hohlraum desWO 99/08742 discloses a short catheter in which the needle is provided with a needle guard. The needle guard consists of a metallic elastic clamp which is inserted into the cavity of the

The needle guard presses against the side of the needle with a hook part. When the needle tip passes the hook part when the needle is withdrawn, the hook part snaps over the needle tip so that the hook part engages over it and is no longer accessible. This prevents injuries to people from the needle tip. In particular, the risk of contamination from germs adhering to the needle that were transferred to the needle when it was used for the first time is reduced. The needle guard ensures that the needle can only be used once so that a contaminated needle is not reused on another patient. To prevent the needle guard from slipping beyond the distal end of the needle, a corresponding locking device in the form of a notch or an out-of-roundness can be provided on the needle, which forms a distal stop to limit the movement of the needle guard.

The present invention is based on the object of creating a short catheter with needle protection, in which the needle protection has a firm hold in its position covering the needle tip due to a clamping effect.

The short catheter according to the invention has the features specified in claim 1. According to this, the needle guard is pre-tensioned in the catheter hub in the axial direction, with its ends being fixed against axial expansion. In the pre-tensioned state, the needle can easily be pushed through the holes in the needle guard because the holes are then oriented in such a way that the needle can be easily moved. In the event of a trigger, i.e. when the needle tip has passed the hook part, the hook part snaps over the needle tip,

The spring element is thereby returned to its original, stretched shape. As a result, the holes that previously surrounded the needle with little play suddenly become narrower in one direction, causing the spring element to grip the needle tightly. By removing the axial pre-tension and allowing the spring element to spring back, the needle is firmly clamped to the hole edges of the spring element. In many cases, this means that locking or blocking devices on the needle can be dispensed with, so that the needle does not have to undergo any changes compared to conventional needles.

In order for the needle guard to be accommodated in the interior of the catheter hub in the axially compressed state, a holding means must be provided in the catheter hub, which forms a stop for the distal end of the needle guard, namely the hook part. Such a holding means preferably consists of a metal part which projects into the catheter tube and supports it in the catheter hub. Such a metal part is usually included in a catheter hub as an internal catheter support. The metal part can be easily modified to form a stop shoulder for the needle guard. This stop shoulder can consist of an end wall which is formed on the opening end of a funnel of the metal part.

Preferably, a proximal holding means consists of an end edge of the needle guard, which protrudes into the wall of the catheter hub. This end edge can be sharpened and dig into the wall of the catheter hub when the needle guard is mounted.

Der distale EndbereichThe short catheter shown has a flexible catheter tube 10 made of elastic plastic, which is provided with a catheter hub 11 at the proximal end. The catheter hub 11 consists of an elongated hollow plastic part that has a slightly conical interior 12 and is provided with a Luer connector 13 at the proximal end. The distal end area

The catheter tube 10- extends through it to the interior 12. A tubular metal part 15 is inserted into the proximal end of the catheter tube 1.0, which expands the catheter tube and presses it against the wall of the tubular area 14. At the proximal opening end of the metal part

15 ist das Metallteil als Trichter 16 aufgeweitet. Dem Öffnungsende des Trichters 16 ist eine radial · nach innen weisende Stirnwand 17 angeformt.15, the metal part is expanded to form a funnel 16. A radially inward-facing end wall 17 is formed on the opening end of the funnel 16.

A hollow needle 18 is inserted into the catheter tube 10, which has a cutting needle tip 19 at the distal end. The needle 18 is made of steel. It is connected at the rear end to a needle hub 20 made of plastic. The needle hub 20 abuts against the proximal end of the catheter hub 11 and then protrudes into the interior 12 with a truncated cone-shaped projection 21 that fits loosely into the catheter hub 11.

28 vorhanden. The interior 12 contains the needle guard 22, which consists of a spring element made of bent spring steel sheet. The needle guard is generally bent in a Z shape, with a rear leg 23, a middle leg 24 and a front leg 25 following one another. A hook part 26 is formed on the front leg 25, which is bent by more than 90°. In the rear leg 23 and the middle leg 24 there is a hole 27 and 28 respectively.

Ein entgegengesetztes Knie 30 verbindet die Abschnitte 23 und 24.The needle guard 22 is inserted into the catheter hub as shown in Fig. 1, sitting on the needle 18, with the hook part 26 being placed against the front wall 17 of the metal part 16. Then, using a tool (not shown) that is inserted into the interior 12 from the proximal end, axial pressure is exerted as shown by arrow 32, whereby the needle guard 22 is compressed in the axial direction. The axial direction is oriented to the orientation of the axis of the catheter tube 10. During the axial compression, a front knee 33 of the needle guard formed between the sections 24 and 25 is pressed into an inner circumferential groove 29 of the interior. An opposite knee 30 connects the sections 23 and 24.

In this compressed state of the needle guard 22, the holes 27, 28 are circular in axial projection. This means that the hole 28 in the oblique middle leg 24 is oval and has a larger extension in the longitudinal direction than in the transverse direction.

When the needle guard 22 is compressed axially, the end edge 31 of the section 23 is pressed into the wall of the catheter hub 11. As a result, the rear end of the needle guard grips the wall, while the front end of the needle guard is supported on the front wall 17. In this state, the needle 18 can be pushed in from the proximal end, passing through the holes 27 and 28 with some play and being able to be pushed forward without resistance. The hook part 26 is pushed radially outwards by the needle 18, so that after the needle 18 is pushed forward further, it presses laterally against the needle.

4 and 5 show the state of the short catheter during withdrawal of the needle 18 from the catheter tube 10 and the catheter hub 11. During withdrawal of the needle 18, the hook part 26, which had previously pressed against the side of the needle, snaps over the needle tip 19. In the process, the needle guard, which had previously been axially compressed, relaxes and the end edge 31 is released from its anchorage in the needle hub. The spring-loaded needle guard 22 thereby stretches in the axial direction and the sharp edges of the holes 27, 28 dig into the needle 18. As can be seen from Fig. 5, the hole 27 becomes an ellipse in axial projection. In the same way, the hole 28 becomes an ellipse in axial projection. As soon as the needle guard has been triggered by the needle tip 19 passing the hook part 26, the hook part 26 snaps over the needle tip and the needle guard

The hook part 26 now shields the needle tip and blocks a distal movement of the needle tip in relation to the needle guard. Because the needle guard expands axially and gives up its support on the catheter hub, it can be moved freely in the catheter hub. After the needle guard is released, it grips the needle at a total of four points of attack with two holes 27, 28. The needle 18 is a cylindrical round needle without any notches, projections or irregularities.
