Artificial leather is usually made from lengths of fabric by treating them with solutions of nitrocellulose, Celluloid or acetyl cellulose mixed with dyes and additives soft holding type, are impregnated. The lengths of fabric are expediently in one color colored which is the same or close to that of the impregnation layer, which after coloring the lengths of fabric is applied to them.
It has now been shown that in order to achieve a coloring of the artificial leather, the nitrocellulose layer does not have to be colored by mixing it with pigment dyes before it is applied to the fabric, but that the coloring of the layer also after impregnation of the fabric with a colorless nitrocellulose or celluloid layer can be made. In this case, however, it is necessary to incorporate covering substances into the layer which are colored simultaneously with the "layer" in an aniline dye liquor, so that the applied layer is not translucent and shows the thread of the fabric, but completely covers it. Such suitable substances are, for example, alumina hydrate , silicic acid or acetic acid clay, etc., in short, all substances that easily form a colored lacquer with aniline dyes. · To color the layer, dye liquors are selected that also dye the fabric are impregnated, which consist of nitrocellulose, celluloid solution and the specified opaque pigments, whereupon the artificial leather is only colored in the aniline dye liquor after the layer has dried.
j The following is an exemplary embodiment of the method:
It is first a solution of, for example, 10 kg of nitrocellulose in known Solvents such as alcohol, acetone, etc .. produced and these with soft oils mixed according to the required suppleness. This solution is then for example about 5 kg of alumina hydrate are added and this is incorporated evenly into the mixture. This solution is applied once or repeatedly to one side of an undyed cotton fabric and the solvent brought to evaporation, whereupon the so impregnated fabric web with use of known Coloring devices with basic aniline dyes in acidic baths is colored. The amount of aniline dye in the liquor depends on the desired intensity of the nitrocellulose layer set, while the fabric side without taking into account the necessary amount of dye itself.
