Aus diesem Grunde wurden Brennkraftmaschinen mit Vorbrennkammer entwickelt. In der Vorbrennkammer wird ein fettes Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch gezündet, wodurch sich eine Stichflamme zum Hauptbrennraum hin entwickelt, welche dann zur Zündung des mageren schwerer zündbaren Gemisches im Hauptbrennraum dient. Das Ergebnis ist eine wesentliche Schadstoffverminderung im Abgas bei gleichzeitig günstigerem Kraftstoffverbrauch.
