Besteckteile insbesondere Löffel aus Leichtmetall wie Aluminium herzustellen ist bekannt. Aluminium ist jedoch ein relativ weiches und nicht abriebfestes Metall, so daß Gabeln schnell verbogen und Messer nicht scharf genug zum Schneiden von Fleisch sind. Abhilfe wird durch Messer kompakt aus Edelstahl bzw. durch Verwendung von Klingen aus Stahl geschaffen. Dieses Besteck hat ein relativ großes Gewicht und ist auch kostenungünstig. Besteck aus Kunststoff ist zwar relativ leicht, kann jedoch meist nur einmal benutzt werden. Brüche bei stärkerer Belastung des „Messers" sind nicht auszuschließen. Die einzelnen Besteckteile des leichten Eßbesteck mit kompakten Einzelteilen bestehen aus dem Leichtmetall Magnesium und dessen Legierungen. Das Eßbesteck kann im Druckgußverfahren hergestellt sein. Die einzelnen Besteckteile können beschichtet sein. Das aus Magnesium hergestellte Eßbesteck vereint mit seinen Eigenschaften als Nichteisenmetall die guten Eigenschaften wie geringes spezifisches Gewicht der Herstellung aus Kunststoff mit der hohen Festigkeit der aus Edelstahl.
