Radiator grille for a motor vehicle

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a grille for a motor vehicle and, more particularly, to a grille which has a three-dimensional profile, is adaptable to different vehicle radiators and is inexpensive to manufacture.

Due to rapid economic development, it is no longer an unrealistic hope for a family to have a motor vehicle in many countries around the world. Many different motor vehicles are commercially available. These motor vehicles generally have a radiator to cool the engine.

Different motor vehicles are equipped with different grilles to protect the radiator. Since different grilles must be used to fit different motor vehicles, the manufacturing cost of grilles is high. In addition, conventional grilles are flat parts that do not have a three-dimensional profile.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

An object of the present invention is to provide a grille that fits a number of motor vehicle radiators.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a grille having a three-dimensional profile.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a grille that is inexpensive to manufacture.

According to the present invention, the grille comprises two vertical end walls, two longitudinal rows of openings respectively formed on the two vertical end walls, and a number of U-shaped tile-like grille sections arranged parallel to each other between the vertical end walls and formed integrally with each other. The U-shaped tile-like grille sections each comprise two vertical walls, a horizontal wall connected between the vertical walls, a number of arcuate holes formed symmetrically on the vertical walls and arranged in a longitudinal line on each of the vertical walls, and a number of elongated slots arranged obliquely and transversely on the horizontal wall and parallel to each other and respectively arranged between the arcuate holes on the vertical walls, connecting them.

The grille can be cut to size to suit a variety of different motor vehicle radiators. The holes and slots allow the grille to be bent into a smooth, arched shape for easy installation in any of a number of motor vehicles. Furthermore, the U-shaped tile-like grille sections present a three-dimensional profile.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a grille 10 according to the present invention is shown as a corrugated sheet-like member having a number of U-shaped roof tile-like grille sections 11 arranged parallel to each other and integrally formed with each other.

Each U-shaped tile-like grille section 11 consists of two vertical walls 12, a horizontal wall 14 connected between the vertical walls 12, curved holes 13 formed symmetrically on the vertical walls 12 and arranged in a longitudinal line on each vertical wall 12, elongated slots 15 formed obliquely and transversely on the horizontal wall 14 and parallel and arranged between the curved holes 13 on the vertical walls 12, connecting them. The grille 10 further comprises two longitudinal rows of openings 16 formed on the two vertical end walls.

Referring to Figs. 3 to 6 and also to Fig. 2, the grille 10 is cut to fit in accordance with a predetermined shape so as to fit the radiator of the motor vehicle, and then the left and right ends of the cut to fit grille 10 are bent downward to bend the grille 10 so that the grille 10 can be inserted into the grille opening at the front of the motor vehicle and then set in its proper position. Since the grille 10 has curved openings 13 and elongated slots 15 on its U-shaped tile-like grille portions 11 and openings 16 on its two vertical end walls, it can be smoothly formed into a curved shape as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and then installed in the motor vehicle to protect the radiator. When installed, the grille 10 protects the radiator against stones and other objects, with the curved openings 13 and the elongated slots 15 acting as ventilation openings to guide ambient cooling air to the surface of the radiator so that the radiator is able to effectively cool the engine of the vehicle.

A prototype of the radiator grille has been built with the features shown in Fig. 1 to 6. The radiator grille functions without problems and has all of the aforementioned features and advantages.

Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been described in detail for purposes of illustration, various modifications and improvements may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. Accordingly, the invention is not limited except as by the appended claims.

Claims (1)

1. A radiator grille having two vertical end walls, two longitudinal rows of openings respectively formed in said two vertical end walls, and a number of U-shaped tile-like grille sections arranged parallel to each other between said two vertical end walls and formed integrally with each other, said U-shaped tile-like grille sections each comprising two vertical walls, a horizontal wall connected between said vertical walls, a number of arcuate holes formed symmetrically on said vertical walls and arranged in a longitudinal line on each of the vertical walls, and a number of elongate slots formed obliquely and transversely on said horizontal wall and parallel to each other and respectively arranged between the arcuate holes on said vertical walls, connecting them.
