Bei dem durch das Patent 113597 geschützten Verfahren wird geschmolzenes Gußeisen aus einem Kupolofen, in kleine Partikel zerteilt, zur intensiven Abkühlung unmittelbar dem Wasser zugeführt. Um jedoch eine weniger intensive Abkühlung zu ermöglichen,. wendet man die bekannten Koquillen an, welchen aus einem Tiegel das flüssige Eisen zugeführt wird. Hierdurch wird erreicht, daß durch weniger rasche Abkühlung die Sprödigkeit des Eisens abnimmt. Um dem Gußeisen eine größere Zähigkeit zu geben, werden dem Eisen noch hierzu geeignete Zusätze hinzugefügt, die im Tiegel mit dem Eisen durch Umrühren vermengt werden. Die leicht verbrennbaren Zusätze dem Kupolofen unmittelbar zuzuführen, ist unangängig, ebenso ginge die durch solche Zusätze erzielte erhöhte Zähigkeit durch unmittelbares rasches Abkühlen in Wasser verloren. Bei Benutzung von Koquillen ist man in der Lage, die Abkühlung mit oder ohne Wasser je nach Bedarf äußerlich regeln zu können, um große Härtung, verbunden mit Zähigkeit, zu erzielen.
