Man hat bisher für Pumpen und Dampfmaschinen Kolbenringe fast nur aus Metall hergestellt. Es fand hierbei eine grofse Abnutzung der Cylinderwandungen statt, wenn nicht gleichzeitig für eine angemessene Schmierung gesorgt wurde. In den letzten Jahren hat sich nun der Graphit als ein vorzügliches Schmiermittel für Kolbenringe bewährt, so dafs der Gedanke nahe lag, die Kolbenringe aus Graphit herzustellen. In Anbetracht, dessen, dafs dem Kolbenring eine gewisse Elasticität innewohnen mufs, damit er sich an den Cylinderwandungen überall gleichmäfsig anlegt, war es nun zunächst nothwendig, den Graphit mit einem elastischen Körper in Verbindung zu bringen, und es zeigte sich bei Versuchen, dafs hierfür Hartgummi aufserordentlich geeignet sei. Wenn die Thatsache, dafs sich Graphit mit Hartgummi verbindet, auch schon allgemein bekannt ist, so ist doch noch von keiner Seite eine derartige Verbindung gebracht worden mit dem ausgesprochenen Zweck, den Graphit als Schmiermittel darin dienen zu lassen. Je nachdem man der Rohgummimasse 20 bis 50 pCt. Graphit in fein gemahlenem Zustand zusetzt, erhält man nach erfolgter Vulkanisation einen Hartgummi, der mehr oder weniger Graphit beim Aufstreichen auf eine Fläche abgiebt, und man hat es hierdurch in der Hand, einen mehr oder minder stark schmierenden Kolbenring herzustellen. Die äufsere Form der Graphit-Hartgummi-Kolbenringe wird man von der allgemein üblichen Form der Metallkolbenringe (Fig. 1 und 2) nicht abweichen lassen; es sei hier nur noch bemerkt, dafs die Abnutzung eine sehr geringe ist, indem bekanntlich schon sehr wenig Graphit zu einer wirksamen Schmierung ausreicht.Up to now, piston rings for pumps and steam engines have been made almost entirely of metal manufactured.
