Man hat versucht, die Nachtheile der bei Cigaretten mit Papiermundstück angewendeten Kork- und Metallmundstücke, die einmal in dem unangenehmen Geschmack, das andere Mal in der Gesundheitsschädlichkeit infolge der Bildung von Oxyden bei Blattmetallen, wenn dieselben mit dem Speichel in Berührung kommen, bestehen, zu beseitigen, indem man das Papiermundstück mit einer Hülle aus Bastpapier versah. Das verwendete Bastpapier besteht dabei aus einer äufserst dünnen, ausgewalzten Bastschicht, welche mit Seidenpapier unterklebt ist. Es ist nun ohne Weiteres klar, dafs eine geringe Dicke der Basthülle nicht im Stande ist, die Feuchtigkeit vom Papiermundstück in genügender Weise abzuhalten und damit dessen Erweichung und Zerstörung durch den Speichel aufzuhalten. Dazu kommt noch, dafs die Verbindung der Bastschicht mit dem Seidenpapier durch ein Klebemittel erfolgen mufs, welches bei der geringen Dicke der Bastschicht wahrend des Kalanderns des Bastpapieres die Bastschicht durchdringen kann, sich dann also beim fertigen Bastpapier an der Oberfläche befinden und später mit den Lippen in Berührung kommen wird.
