Abstract
The retention device (1) is provided by a cylinder (2) filled with a magnetorheological fluid, containing an axially displaced piston (3), having an attached piston rod (4) projecting from the cylinder, the piston containing a permanent magnet cooperating with a ferromagnetic element (7) attached to the cylinder mantle at a point which corresponds to the required axial retention position. A bypass path (6) is provided between the outside wall of the piston and the inside wall of the cylinder, for connecting the cylinder spaces on the opposite sides of the piston with one another.
