The present disclosure relates to an adjustable bed. Specifically, the present disclosure relates to an adjustable bed that is inflatable and designed to minimize pain and discomfort experienced during pregnancy.

Background technique

Adjustable beds of various designs and configurations to provide a comfortable and healthy resting or sleeping environment for pregnant women have a long history of development.

During pregnancy, women experience greater pain. Seeking comfort and relief is vital to the health of both the baby and the mother. Pain and discomfort are multifactorial and are often exacerbated by women's inability to find comfortable resting positions on traditional mattresses. Pregnancy is a dynamic process; the individual resting positions and postures that provide a woman with the best level of comfort will vary from day to day. Therefore, there is a need for an adjustable bed to meet the needs of different women at different stages of pregnancy.

In the past, this has led to the development of many types of mattresses that include a properly positioned central cavity for accommodating an expanded abdomen. Previous generations of adjustable beds included static and dynamic features to accommodate differences in abdominal size and orientation and their changes over time. However, the sub-optimal alignment of the female spine, determined by the woman's lying position, can result in an inability to provide a comfortable and healthy rest or sleep environment.

In the present disclosure, there is provided an adjustable bed comprising:

an adjustable base; and

A skin layer is disposed on the base, the skin layer has a first end and an opposing second end and defines an opening between the first end and the second end, the skin layer has a recess defined between the first end and the opening.

The recesses of the skin are independently adjustable relative to the rest of the skin. Further, the base is adjustable and the recesses of the skin are independently adjustable relative to the base.

The adjustable base may include a first portion and a second portion disposed on the first portion. The base may also define, together with the opening of the skin, a cavity disposed in the storage area.

The insert may be disposed in the cavity. The insert may include an inflatable member positioned within the cavity. The inflatable member may form an extension of the base and be attached to the base.

The recess can be adjusted independently of the insert. The recess may be configured to accommodate a pillow. A recess may be provided at the front of the adjustable bed, and the pillow, in use, allows the user to raise or lower the level of the user's head.

A lift member may be positioned between the skin and the base for lifting a portion of the skin relative to the base. A lift member may be positioned proximate the second end of the skin and on the base. Furthermore, the lift member may be an inflatable member.

The recesses are independently adjustable relative to the lift member. Likewise, adjustability of the base may be provided by at least one of the inflatable first and second portions. Both the first part and the second part can be inflated, and the first part and the second part can be inflated independently of each other. Additionally, the base and lift members can be inflated independently. Furthermore, the skin, the recesses of the skin and the insert can be inflated independently of the base and lift members.

In an embodiment, the first portion may comprise an expanded peripheral wall for improving the stability of the base.

In embodiments, the recesses may form non-adjustable components of the skin.

Detailed ways

Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used to refer to like parts throughout this document, an embodiment of an adjustable bed 10 is shown. The adjustable bed 10 is particularly designed to minimize pain and discomfort during pregnancy by meeting the needs of different users and the needs of individual users that change during their pregnancy.

The adjustable bed 10 includes a base 12 and an adjustable skin 14 disposed on the base 12 . The skin 14 has a first end 16 and an opposite second end 18 (FIG. 2). The skin 14 defines an opening 20 between the first end 16 and the second end 18, as shown in FIG. 4 . The openings 20 are centrally located on the longitudinal axis of the base 12 , equidistant from both sides of the base 12 . A recess 22 is provided between the first end 16 and the opening 20. In an embodiment, the skin 14 is composed of a flocked material that is comfortable enough to allow a user to rest thereon.

The skin 14 is adjustable by inflation. Furthermore, to increase the versatility of the bed 10, the recess 22 may be inflated independently of the remainder of the skin 14, as shown by separate inflation conduits 23 and 25, respectively, in Figure 4 . Internal gussets or baffles 27 ( FIG. 5 ) are embedded between the recesses 22 and the remainder of the skin 14 to divide the skin 14 into two separate fill chambers 31 and 33 , thereby facilitating the relative relation of the recess 22 to the rest of the skin 14 Parts are inflated independently. Further, at the interface 25 between the upper surface of the recess 22 and the upper surface of the remainder of the skin 14, the material defining the upper surface is contoured to define the transition between the recess 22 and the remainder of the skin 14.

In another embodiment, the recess 22 may be of a fixed structure, ie, not inflated, and only the remainder of the skin 14 is inflatable. In other words, only the chambers 33 of the skin 14 are inflatable.

The recess 22 is configured to accommodate a user's pillow (not shown). Depending on the position in which the user is lying, the level of support required for the user's head will vary. Thus, the recesses 22 allow the use of standard pillows (as preferred by a particular user) to provide more comfortable spinal alignment. The height at which the user's head is positioned may be determined by the height and configuration of the user's pillow in the recess 22 .

The operable upper surface of the recess 22 is disposed higher than the operable upper surface of the base 12, and the operable upper surface of the recess 22 has a difference height "H" compared to the operable upper surface of the remainder of the skin 14, which Height "H" can be adjusted anywhere between about 0-100 mm. It will be appreciated that the height "H" will depend on the degree of inflation of the recess 22 relative to the remainder of the skin 14 . In one embodiment, "H" is in the range of about 30-40 millimeters. In other embodiments, "H" may range from 0-10 mm, 11-20 mm, 21-30 mm, 41-50 mm, 51-60 mm, 61-70 mm, 71-80 mm, 81- Anywhere between 90mm and 91-100mm. When referring to any range, that range also includes the endpoints.

The base 12 includes a first portion 24 and a second portion 26 disposed above the first portion 24 . Portions 24 and 26 are combined so that base 12 forms a rectangular rib sufficiently wide and deep enough to allow a user to rest comfortably thereon. Portions 24 and 26 are interconnected by conduits (not shown) allowing fluid communication therebetween and facilitating joint inflation of portions 24 and 26 . In another embodiment, portions 24 and 26 may be fluidly isolated from each other to facilitate independent inflation of portions 24 and 26 . Each of the portions 24 and 26 of the base 12 may be composed of any flexible and gas impermeable material, such as high quality PVC, polyurethane, or any other suitable material commonly used in inflatable medical device applications.

Additionally, the base 12 defines a cavity 28 . In an embodiment, the cavity 28 is rectangular and centrally located on the longitudinal axis of the base 12 equidistant from both sides of the base 12 . Cavity 28 is defined by portion 24 of base 12 and is located in the storage space below opening 20 of skin 14 . The cavity 28 is positioned so that a prone user will feel her abdomen and chest at least partially within the cavity 28 . The cavity 28 is deep enough to allow a user to comfortably place their abdomen within the cavity 28 during the last trimester of pregnancy.

The bed 10 includes an insert 30 (best seen in FIG. 10 ) that can be received within the cavity 28 of the base 12 . In an embodiment, insert 30 is composed of the same material as base 12 and includes an inflatable member located inside cavity 28 . Insert 30 is configured such that it substantially fills opening 20 and cavity 28 when inflated. In addition, it will be appreciated that the insert 30 may be inflatable independently of the base 12 and have a fill port 37 (FIG. 4) via which inflation and deflation may occur. In an embodiment, the insert 30 is attached to the upper surface of the portion 24 of the base 12 .

Insert 30 is used in conjunction with a non-inflatable member such as pad 31 (FIG. 10). The insert 30 is inflated or deflated to the desired height and the non-inflatable member 31 is positioned on the insert 30 within the opening 20 and/or cavity 28 at the desired location. The adjustability of the combination of insert 30 and non-inflatable member 31 helps provide the proper/desirable level of support for the user.

In other embodiments, the insert 30 may be used alone and inflated and/or deflated to the desired level, or alternatively, the insert 30 may be omitted and replaced by a separate, non-inflatable item such as pillow or cushion) instead.

Thus, in use, the adjustable bed 10 is configured such that the opening 20 and cavity 28 are shaped into combined alignment to comfortably locate at least partially a user's abdomen and chest therein. Furthermore, the inflation pressure of the insert 30, the size of the non-inflatable member 31, the combined opening 20 and the cavity 28 may vary from person to person. This further increases the versatility of the bed 10 and allows the user to set the bed 10 to her comfort level.

In the disclosed illustrated embodiment, the adjustable bed 10 includes a lift member 32 located between the skin 14 and the base 12 and at the foot region 34 of the skin 14 of the bed 10 . A lift member 32 is disposed proximate the second end 18 of the skin 14 and is disposed on the base 12 . In an embodiment, the lift member 32 is composed of the same material as the base 12 and is inflatable. Again, in one embodiment, lift member 32 may be inflated independently of base 12 and insert 30 .

The lift member 32 has a wedge-shaped leading edge and a platform-defining portion to lift the foot region 34 of the skin 14 relative to the base 12 by inflation. In use, the foot region 34 of the cover 14 supports the user's legs. Thus, the inflatable lift member 32 enables the user to comfortably position her legs relative to the rest of her body.

Accordingly, the adjustable bed 10 provides an adjustable base 12 in which at least one of the first portion 24 and the second portion 26 is inflatable. It will be appreciated that the portions 24 and 26 of the base 12 may be inflated only once and then maintained at the desired inflation pressure. Furthermore, the base 12, insert 30 and lift member 32 are independently inflatable. In an embodiment, a pump (not shown) may be positioned within the base 12 , or connected to various inflatable components (ie, portions 24 and/or 26 of the base 12 , the skin 14 , the recess 22 of the skin 14 , the insert 30 ) An inflation valve associated with the lift member 32). In addition, the pump can be controlled by a remote control (not shown) that can control the inflation and deflation of the components of the adjustable bed 10 .

Referring to Figure 12, where the same reference numerals are used to refer to the same parts unless otherwise indicated, another embodiment of the adjustable bed 10 is shown. In the present embodiment, the first portion 24 includes a peripheral wall 36 that expands at least when viewed from the end. The expanded peripheral wall 36 increases the overall width of the first portion 24, which increases the stability of the adjustable bed 10 in use.

One advantage of the described embodiment is that the recess 22 of the skin 14, in combination with the adjustable opening 20 and cavity 28, provides better alignment of the spine for a user lying in a prone position using a standard pillow. This is especially useful in preventing improper flexion and extension of the user's neck, which can lead to overall pain, discomfort and sleep disturbance. Accordingly, the adjustable bed 10 provides better pain relief by comfortably accommodating the upper, middle and lower parts of the user's body, allowing for a comfortable and healthy rest or sleep environment.

The adjustable bed 10 provides a greater degree of customization and flexibility for the user to find her optimal sleeping or resting position. The level of support required for the head can be adjusted regardless of sleeping position, whether on the side, prone or back, as well as mid-to-lower abdominal and chest area support. Therefore, the user is able to fine-tune the support in these areas for greater comfort during pregnancy.

It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that many variations and/or modifications may be made to the above-described embodiments without departing from the general scope of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the present embodiments are to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.

Claims (18)

1. An adjustable bed, comprising:

a base; and

an adjustable skin disposed on the base, the skin having a first end and an opposing second end and defining an opening therebetween, the skin having a recess defined between the first end and the opening.

2. The adjustable bed of claim 1, wherein the recess of the surface layer is independently adjustable relative to the remainder of the surface layer.

3. The adjustable bed of claim 1 or 2, wherein the base is adjustable and the recess of the skin is independently adjustable relative to the base.

4. The adjustable bed of claim 2, wherein the skin is adjustable by inflation, wherein the recess is independently inflatable relative to the remainder of the skin.

5. The adjustable bed of claim 1, wherein the base comprises a first portion and a second portion disposed on the first portion.

6. The adjustable bed of claim 1, wherein the base and the opening of the skin together define a cavity disposed in a storage area.

7. The adjustable bed of claim 6, wherein the adjustable bed comprises an insert disposed in the cavity.

8. The adjustable bed of claim 7, wherein the insert comprises an inflatable member positioned within the cavity.

9. The adjustable bed of claim 7 or 8, wherein the recess is adjustable independently of the insert.

10. The adjustable bed of claim 1, wherein the recess is configured to receive a pillow.

11. The adjustable bed of claim 5, wherein a lifting member is positioned between the skin and the base, the lifting member lifting a portion of the skin relative to the base.

12. The adjustable bed of claim 11, wherein the lifting member is disposed proximate the second end of the skin and on the base.

13. The adjustable bed according to claim 11 or 12, wherein the lifting member is an inflatable member.

14. The adjustable bed according to claim 11 or 12, wherein the recess is independently adjustable relative to the lifting member.

15. The adjustable bed according to claim 11 or 12, wherein the adjustability of the base is provided by at least one of the first and second portions being inflatable.

16. The adjustable bed of claim 15, wherein the base and the lifting member are independently inflatable.

17. The adjustable bed of claim 5, wherein the first portion includes an expanded perimeter wall for enhancing stability of the base.

18. The adjustable bed of claim 1, wherein the recess forms a non-adjustable component of the surface.
