目前，普遍使用的花瓶，多为陶瓷或石膏制成，并在外表面上装饰上图案色彩，对家居装饰起到一定的装饰效果。但这些由陶瓷制成的花瓶，重量较重，且易摔碎，运输和使用都不方便。且陶瓷花瓶的保养要小心谨慎，防止外界破坏因素。所谓外界破坏因素，有自然因素、人为因素以及意外因素等。自然因素主要是指温度、光线、尘埃等，陶瓷花瓶不要放在高温强光的地方，尤其是薄胎陶瓷瓶。陶瓷花瓶上积有尘埃，要用软布轻拭。放置时要妥当，防止倾倒。鉴赏时要脱掉手上的戒指等硬物，谨防划伤釉面。拿器物时，一手托底，另一手把牢器身，不能仅用一手抓住器物口沿拿起。
还有一些花瓶由金属制成，虽然不易摔碎，便于运输，但成本高，浪费金属材料，随着生活的发展，人们的环保意识逐渐提高，如何充分的利用环保材料，促进物品的再循环利用成为人们关注的焦点。
