Abstract

A cosmetic composition comprising an antimicrobial system comprising: an antimicrobial agent comprising 4-hydroxyacetophenone and one or more additional antimicrobial agents comprising piroctone olamine. The antimicrobial system can be used in a cosmetic composition, wherein the composition is a makeup remover composition that is an O/W emulsion, a W/O emulsion, micellar water, a makeup remover wipe or a two-phase ( or heterogeneous) composition. The antimicrobial system may be free or substantially free of any one or more of parabens, alcohols, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde-derived compounds. Technical Field

The present invention relates to makeup removal and cleansing compositions comprising a novel antimicrobial system that provide makeup removal benefits while minimizing irritation to the eye and other tissues.

Background Art

Typically, makeup removers and cleansers are used on the entire face, including some that must be used around the eyes. In fact, in addition to longer-lasting lip products, there are makeup cleansers designed specifically to remove stubborn makeup such as regular or waterproof mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, glitter, and long-wear foundation. Such cleansers may require repeated pulling and rubbing on the skin, especially on and around the delicate eye tissue, which can be inherently irritating. In addition, most makeup removers include antimicrobial agents and preservatives, which can also cause stinging and burning sensations in the eye area during makeup removal due to proximity to the eyes or, in some cases, accidental contact with the eyes.

Therefore, there is a need for cosmetic compositions, particularly cleansers and cleansing wipes, that will provide makeup removal and have preservation and protection against microbial growth benefits without causing eye irritation. These compositions and articles will ideally exclude antimicrobial, preservative and cleansing components such as pentylene glycol, phenoxyethanol and parabens that are irritants without compromising the cleansing and antimicrobial efficacy.

According to the present disclosure, the novel antimicrobial systems unexpectedly produce significantly reduced or no eye irritation when used in makeup removal or cleansing compositions compared to similarly formulated compositions including conventional antimicrobial systems.

Summary of the invention

In various embodiments, the present disclosure provides a cosmetic composition comprising:

i. an antimicrobial system, the antimicrobial system comprising:

a) an antimicrobial agent comprising 4-hydroxyacetophenone; and

b) at least one additional antimicrobial agent including piroctone olamine.

According to various embodiments, the cosmetic composition comprising the antimicrobial system is one of an O/W emulsion, a W/O emulsion, a micellar water, a wipe, or a two-phase (or multi-phase) composition. In some specific embodiments, the cosmetic composition is a makeup removal composition, which is one of an O/W emulsion, a W/O emulsion, a micellar water, a makeup removal wipe, or a two-phase (or multi-phase) composition.

In some embodiments, the at least one additional antimicrobial agent may also include any one or more of the following antimicrobial agents and salts thereof, including caprylyl glycol, caprylhydroxamic acid, chlorphenesin, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, benzyl alcohol, phenethyl alcohol, and benzalkonium chloride.

In some embodiments, the cosmetic composition is free of or substantially free of any one or more of parabens, alcohols, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde-derived compounds. In some specific embodiments, the composition is free of or substantially free of parabens, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde-derived compounds.

In some specific embodiments, the composition is free or substantially free of alcohol including one or more of ethanol and isopropanol.

In some embodiments, the composition is free or substantially free of antimicrobial agents including any one or more of pentylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, hexylglycerin, ethylhexylglycerin, caprylylglycerin, benzylglycerin, 3-heptanoyl-2,2-propanediol, and 1,2-hexanediol.

According to various embodiments, the antimicrobial agent including 4-hydroxyacetophenone accounts for about 0.2% to about 1% by weight of the composition; at least one additional antimicrobial agent including piroctone olamine (oxymethopram) when present accounts for about 0.05% to about 1.5% by weight of the composition. In some specific embodiments, the composition includes 4-hydroxyacetophenone accounting for about 0.25% to about 2% by weight of the composition; at least one additional antimicrobial agent including piroctone olamine when present accounts for about 0.05% to about 1.5% by weight of the composition.

According to some embodiments, the present disclosure provides a makeup removing composition, comprising:

i. an antimicrobial system, the antimicrobial system comprising:

a) an antimicrobial agent comprising 4-hydroxyacetophenone; and

b) at least one additional antimicrobial agent including piroctone olamine; and

ii. Water-based cleaning system.

According to some embodiments, the present disclosure provides a makeup removing composition, comprising:

i. an antimicrobial system, the antimicrobial system comprising:

a) an antimicrobial agent comprising 4-hydroxyacetophenone; and

b) at least one additional antimicrobial agent including piroctone olamine; and

ii. A water-based cleaning system, the water-based cleaning system comprising:

a) one or more lipophilic emollients;

b) at least one thickener for water-based systems;

c) one or more humectants; and

d) Water.

According to some embodiments:

i. the at least one lipophilic emollient is selected from isohexadecane, C15-19 alkanes, isododecane, undecane, tridecane, isopropyl myristate, dicaprylyl ether, ethylhexyl palmitate, isopropyl palmitate, cetearyl ethylhexanoate, isononyl isononanoate, isostearate, diisopropyl sebacate, coconut oil alcohol caprylate/caprate, diisopropyl adipate and combinations thereof;

ii. the at least one thickener is selected from the group consisting of acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, sodium acrylate copolymer, carbomer, xanthan gum, hydroxypropyl guar gum, cerasus (carob) gum, ammonium polyacryloyldimethyl taurate, ammonium acryloyldimethyl taurate/steareth-25 methacrylate crosspolymer and polyacrylate crosspolymer-6, and combinations thereof;

iii. at least one humectant comprising glycerin.

In various embodiments, the composition may include at least one of each of the components, and may further include one or more additives selected from the group consisting of: fragrances, pearlescent agents, silicon dioxide, proteins, protein hydrolysates, vitamins, panthenol, silicones, deodorants, and coloring materials; essential oils; fruit extracts, such as apple (Pyrus Malus) fruit extract and Aloe Barbadensis leaf juice powder; citric acid, sodium chloride; neutralizing or pH adjusting agents (e.g., triethylamine (TEA) and sodium hydroxide), and combinations thereof.

In some embodiments, a cosmetic preparation is provided that includes a cosmetic composition, the preparation comprising:

a. a water-insoluble substrate, the water-insoluble substrate comprising a cosmetic wipe;

b. a cosmetic composition according to the present disclosure impregnated in the water-insoluble substrate,

The cosmetic composition is impregnated onto the water-insoluble substrate at an impregnation rate of 250 to 400 wt % of the cleaning composition relative to the weight of the substrate.

According to various embodiments, the article is formed from synthetic materials or from natural biodegradable and sustainably sourced naturally derived fibers, natural fibers, or regenerated or recycled natural fibers.

In some specific embodiments, the article comprises nonwoven fibers formed from natural, biodegradable and sustainable source fibers selected from: (1) natural source fibers including one or a combination of pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate and cotton; (2) natural fibers including one or a combination of hemp, flax, seaweed, ramie, banana and pineapple; and (3) regenerated or recycled fibers including cotton; and combinations of these fibers.

In some embodiments, the present disclosure provides a cosmetic composition comprising: an antimicrobial system comprising: an antimicrobial agent comprising 4-hydroxyacetophenone; and at least one additional antimicrobial agent comprising piroctone olamine; and a skin care system selected from the following: a two-phase water-based cleansing system; a multi-phase water-based cleansing system; a single-phase micellar water-based cleansing system; and a topical composition that is one of a serum, an essence, a face, or a mask.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

It is to be understood that the term "article" is understood here to mean a combination consisting of a water-insoluble carrier and a composition impregnated on the carrier. This article may specifically be a wipe, but it may also have any form including those described below. The water-insoluble substrate is absorbent and strong enough so that it does not disintegrate during use. The article as defined above is used to care for the skin or hair and/or clean and/or remove make-up and/or scrub the skin.

"Keratinous substrate" and "keratinous tissue" each include, but are not limited to, skin, hair, and nails.

By "cosmetically acceptable" is meant a carrier that is compatible with any keratinous substrate.

In various embodiments, the present disclosure provides an antimicrobial system and a makeup removal composition comprising the antimicrobial system. The antimicrobial system includes: an antimicrobial agent including 4-hydroxyacetophenone and one or more additional antimicrobial agents including piroctone olamine. In some examples, the antimicrobial system can be used in a skin care system selected from the following: a two-phase water-based cleaning system; a multi-phase water-based cleaning system; a single-phase micellar water-based cleaning system; and a topical composition that is one of a serum, an essence, a cream, or a mask. In some specific examples, the antimicrobial system can be used in a makeup removal composition, which is one of an O/W emulsion, a W/O emulsion, a micellar water, or a two-phase (or multi-phase) composition. In some embodiments, the composition is used in a makeup removal wipe.

In various embodiments, the antimicrobial system may be free of or substantially free of any one or more of parabens, alcohols, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde-derived compounds. In some specific embodiments, the composition is free of or substantially free of parabens, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde-derived compounds. In some specific embodiments, the composition is free of or substantially free of one or more of pentanediol, phenoxyethanol, hexylglycerol, ethylhexylglycerol, octylglycerol, benzylglycerol, 1,3-propylene glycol, 3-heptanoyl-2,2-propylene glycol, and 1,2-hexanediol. In some specific embodiments, the composition is free of or substantially free of each of the following: pentanediol, phenoxyethanol, hexylglycerol, ethylhexylglycerol, octylglycerol, benzylglycerol, 1,3-propylene glycol, 3-heptanoyl-2,2-propylene glycol, and 1,2-hexanediol. In some embodiments, the composition is free of or substantially free of all alcohols. In some specific embodiments, the composition is free of or substantially free of one or more alcohols including ethanol and isopropanol.

In various embodiments, the composition may include more than one of each ingredient, and may also include one or more additives, including moisturizers, preservatives, fragrances, active agents, and pH adjusters, as well as other cosmetically acceptable additives.

Through consumer evaluation of MUR efficacy, the compositions according to the present disclosure demonstrated consistent makeup removal performance as the comparative compositions, and significantly improved performance in terms of eye irritation.

In some embodiments, the present disclosure provides an antimicrobial system and a makeup removal composition injected into a cosmetic application article. The article can be made of synthetic materials, such as PET (polyethylene terephthalate or polyester) and PP (polypropylene), which can be used alone or in combination with natural-based materials. And in some embodiments, the article can be formed from sustainable and biodegradable substrates from the following sources, such as (1) fiber-based nonwovens of natural origin, such as pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate, cotton, (2) natural fiber-based nonwovens, such as hemp, flax, seaweed, ramie, banana, pineapple, and (3) regenerated or recycled fiber-based nonwovens, such as cotton.

Many conventional cosmetic products, such as wipes, are made from fossil-based polymer materials, such as PET (polyethylene terephthalate or polyester) and PP (polypropylene), which may be used alone or in combination with natural-based materials. Such synthetic substrates are desirable because they are relatively inexpensive to produce and have good tensile strength, but they can have an adverse impact on the environment because they do not substantially degrade. With the cosmetic industry's increasing focus on sustainability, there is a need for cosmetic products that utilize solid substrates derived from sources such as (1) naturally derived fiber-based nonwovens, such as pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate, cotton; (2) natural fiber-based nonwovens, such as hemp, flax, seaweed, ramie, banana, pineapple; and (3) regenerated or recycled fiber-based nonwovens, such as cotton. As used herein, the term "naturally derived fiber" refers to a fiber material formed by a chemical process that provides a derivative based on a natural fiber; "natural fiber" means a non-derivative form of a natural fiber; and "regenerated/recycled" means a natural fiber recovered from a commercial product formed using such fiber.

In some embodiments, the products herein are formed by obtaining from a sustainable source and being a biodegradable substrate. In some specific embodiments, these materials are selected from natural source fibers, using the fiber of for example pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate and cotton to form a nonwoven. And in certain embodiments, the substrate for forming the cosmetic product is a nonwoven of lyocell. According to those embodiments comprising natural biodegradable and sustainable source fibers, the obvious benefit of realization is to have the opportunity to reduce environmental burden. Other benefits can also be realized using sustainable and biodegradable substrates. As further described herein, using sustainable and biodegradable substrates, the products of particularly lyocell nonwovens show some machinery, texture and absorption characteristics.

The preparation according to the present disclosure is moist to the touch. It exhibits the advantages of being comfortable during application to the skin and having a nourishing effect due to the presence of an oil phase. When the preparation is used to clean the skin or remove make-up from the skin, the preparation according to the present disclosure is passed over the skin, while it is possible to allow the preparation to be applied for a time sufficient for the cosmetics to dissolve in the impregnation composition of the preparation, and then the skin is wiped. The skin may optionally be rinsed subsequently. The preparation according to the invention is preferably a cosmetic preparation suitable for the care and/or treatment of the skin of the face, body or hands and for cleaning the skin of the face and/or body or removing make-up from the skin of the face and/or body. The preparation may also be used for the care of hair and for removing make-up from the eyes.

The article according to the present disclosure may have any form suitable for the desired purpose. It may constitute a wipe having a generally rectangular, square or other shape, which may be single-layer, multi-layer, and may be folded or unfolded. The article may also be a glove, mitten or any other form suitable for practical use on the face or body, for example in the form of a face with holes for the eyes, nose and mouth area, or in the form of a makeup removal fingertip for removing makeup from eyelashes, or in the form of a single-sided or double-sided disc, which may in particular include two sides impregnated with different compositions. The article may also include a rough surface, which may exfoliate (clean) the skin.

In an exemplary embodiment, a composition including an antimicrobial system of the present invention according to the present disclosure may be in the form of a makeup removal composition, which includes one or more lipophilic emollients, one or more volatile organosilicon compounds, at least one thickener for a water-based system, and one or more humectants and water. Of course, it should be understood that in other embodiments, the antimicrobial system of the present invention according to the present disclosure may be provided in the form of a composition, which is generally in the form of an O/W emulsion, a W/O emulsion, a micellar water, a makeup removal wipe, or one of a two-phase (or multi-phase) composition. Therefore, according to the teachings of the art about selecting ingredients for various cosmetic compositions, especially for makeup removal compositions, an antimicrobial system can be incorporated to replace conventional antimicrobial systems in the art. And in particular, such compositions are free of or substantially free of any one or more of parabens, surfactants, alcohols, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde-derived compounds. And, in some embodiments, the composition is free or substantially free of antimicrobial agents including any one or more of pentylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, hexylglycerin, ethylhexylglycerin, caprylylglycerin, benzylglycerin, 3-heptanoyl-2,2-propanediol, and 1,2-hexanediol.

Lipophilic emollients

According to the present disclosure, the compositions according to the present disclosure may include one or more lipophilic emollients.

Lipophilic emollients can be selected from the side chain or straight chain liquid alkanes with a carbon chain length of C11 to C20. In various embodiments, liquid alkanes can be selected from the liquid alkanes with a carbon chain length of C11 to C20. Liquid alkanes can be selected from those liquid alkanes with a carbon chain length of C11 to C20, or C15 to C19, or one of C11, C12, C13, C14, C15, C16, C17, C18 to C19. In some specific embodiments, suitable liquid alkanes that can be used according to the disclosure include oils based on hydrocarbons containing 8 to 16 carbon atoms, especially side chain C8-C16 alkanes, such as C8-C16 isoparaffins. In some exemplary embodiments, this liquid alkane can be selected from isoparaffins, such as isododecane (also known as 2,2,4,4,6-pentamethylheptane), isodecane and isohexadecane.

In some embodiments, the at least one lipophilic emollient comprises one or more of: isohexadecane, C15-19 alkanes, isododecane, undecane, tridecane, and combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the at least one lipophilic emollient comprises isohexadecane.

Lipophilic emollients can be selected from polar emollients. Emollients are oil phase ingredients selected from esters, triglycerides, ethers, carbonates, alcohols, oils, butters, fatty acids and their combinations. In various embodiments, polar emollients can be selected from those polar emollients with 400g/mol or less molecular weight. More generally, polar emollients can have a molecular weight in the range of about 50g/mol to about 350g/mol.

In some embodiments, suitable polar emollients that can be used according to the present disclosure include those derived from C12-C50 fatty acids, preferably C16-C22 saturated fatty acids and monohydric alcohols. In some embodiments, such esters can be selected from isopropyl myristate, methyl palmitate, isopropyl laurate, isopropyl palmitate, ethylhexyl palmitate, ethylhexyl laurate, ethylhexyl oleate, ethylhexyl isononanoate, myristyl myristate, 2-ethylhexyl caprylate (or octyl caprylate), 2-ethylhexyl palmitate, isostearyl neopentanoate, isononyl isononanoate, hexyl laurate, esters of lactic acid with fatty alcohols including 12 or 13 carbon atoms, dicaprylyl carbonate, and mixtures thereof.

In some embodiments, at least one lipophilic emollient comprises one of the following: isopropyl myristate, dicaprylyl ether, ethylhexyl palmitate, isopropyl palmitate, cetearyl ethylhexanoate, isononyl isononanoate, isostearate, diisopropyl sebacate, coco caprylate/caprate, diisopropyl adipate, and combinations thereof. In some specific embodiments, one or more lipophilic emollients comprise isopropyl myristate.

In some embodiments, the at least one lipophilic emollient includes dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, and/or other silicone emollients.

In some specific embodiments, the at least one lipophilic emollient includes each of isohexadecane, isopropyl myristate, dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, and/or other silicone emollients.

Each of the at least one or more lipophilic emollients is present in the composition in an amount in the range of about 1 wt % to about 12 wt %, or about 3 wt % to about 11 wt %, or about 5 wt % to about 10 wt %, based on the weight of the composition, or any suitable combination, subcombination, range or subrange thereof. However, one of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that other ranges are also within the scope of the present invention.

Thus, each of the at least one or more lipophilic emollients in the composition may comprise from about 1 wt%, 2 wt%, 3 wt%, 4 wt%, 5 wt%, 6 wt%, 7 wt%, 8 wt%, 9 wt%, 10 wt%, 11 wt% to about 12 wt%, including increments and ranges therebetween, based on the total weight of the composition.

Thickener

According to the present disclosure, the composition according to the present disclosure may include at least one thickener.

In some embodiments, at least one thickener may be selected from one or more of natural gums and synthetic polymers, such as starch (corn, rice, cassava, potato), gums (xanthan carrageenan, gellan gum, sclerotium). In some specific embodiments, at least one thickener may be selected from acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, sodium acrylate copolymer, carbomer, xanthan gum, hydroxypropyl guar gum, carob (carob) gum, ammonium polyacryloyldimethyltaurate, ammonium acryloyldimethyltaurate/steareth-25 methacrylate crosspolymer, and polyacrylate crosspolymer-6.

In some embodiments, the composition includes two or more thickeners. In some such embodiments, the composition includes one or both of the polymeric thickeners Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer and Sodium Acrylates Copolymer, and optionally one or more additional polymeric thickeners.

Each of the at least one thickening agent is present in the composition in an amount in the range of about 0.01 wt % to about 5 wt %, or about 0.01 wt % to about 3 wt %, or about 0.05 wt % to about 2.5 wt %, based on the weight of the composition, or any suitable combination, subcombination, range or subrange thereof. However, one of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that other ranges are also within the scope of the present invention.

In some embodiments, the total amount of thickener present in the composition is from about 0.01 wt % to about 5 wt %, or from about 1.0 wt % to about 3 wt %, or from about 2 wt % to about 2.55 wt %, or any suitable combination, subcombination, range or subrange thereof, based on the weight of the composition. However, one of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that other ranges are also within the scope of the present invention.

Thus, one or more thickeners, when present, comprise from about 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.03%, 0.04%, 0.05%, 0.06%, 0.07%, 0.08%, 0.09%, 1.0%, 1.1%, 1.2%, 1.3%, 1.4%, 1.5%, 1.6%, 1.7%, 1.8%, 1.9%, 2.0%, 2.1%, 2.2%, 2.3%, 2.4%, 2.5%, 2.6%, 2.7%, 2.8%, 2.9%, 3.0%, 3.5%, 4.0%, 4.5% to about 5.0% by weight based on the total weight of the composition, including increments and ranges therebetween.

Solvent/Water

According to various embodiments, water accounts for the scope of composition about 40 wt % to about 90 wt %, or about 55 wt % to about 85 wt %, or about 60 wt % to about 75 wt %, or about 65 wt % to about 70 wt % or any suitable combination, sub-combination, scope or sub-range based on the weight of the composition. However, it will be appreciated by those of ordinary skill in the art that other scopes are also within the scope of the present invention. Therefore, water accounts for about 40 wt %, 45 wt %, 50 wt %, 55 wt %, 60 wt %, 65 wt %, 70 wt %, 75 wt %, 80 wt %, 85 wt % to about 90 wt %, including increments and scopes therebetween.

The water used may be sterile demineralized water, and/or floral water, such as rose water, cornflower water, camomile water or lime water, and/or natural thermal water or mineral water, such as water from Vittel, water from the Vichy basin, water from Uriage, water from La Roche Posay, water from La Bourboule, water from Enghien-les-Bains, water from Saint Gervais-les-Bains, water from Neris-les-Bains, water from Al levar-les-Bains, water from Digne, water from Maizieres, water from Neyrac-les-Bains, water from Lons-le-Saunier, water from Eaux Bonnes, water from Rochefort, water from Saint Christau, water from Les Fumades, water from Tercis-les-Bains or water from Avene. The aqueous phase may also comprise reconstituted thermal water, i.e. water of reconstituted thermal water character comprising trace elements such as zinc, copper, magnesium, etc.

The pH of the composition is not limited, but is typically between 2 and 12, and in some embodiments is one of: between 3 and 11, and between 5 and 9, and between 6 and 8, and in some embodiments is 7. The pH is adjusted to the desired value by adding a base (organic or inorganic), such as ammonia or a primary, secondary or tertiary (poly)amine, such as monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, isopropanolamine or 1,3-propylenediamine, to the composition, or alternatively by adding an inorganic or organic acid, preferably a carboxylic acid, such as, for example, citric acid.

In some embodiments, the composition can include one or more additional solvents, such as monohydric alcohols, such as monohydric C ₁ -C ₈ alcohols, such as ethanol, propanol, butanol, isopropanol, isobutanol, and benzyl alcohol, and phenylethanol.

In some embodiments, the composition is free or substantially free of any and all alcohols. In some specific embodiments, the composition is free or substantially free of alcohols including one or more of ethanol and isopropanol.

Moisturizer/Hydrifier

According to the disclosure, a variety of wetting agents may be present in the composition. In some embodiments, wetting agents may include one or more of the following: polyols, including, for example, glycerol, glycerol, butylene glycol, propylene glycol, isopentyl glycol, dipropylene glycol, hexylene glycol and polyethylene glycol, monoethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, hexylene glycol; glycol ethers, such as monopropylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and tripropylene glycol alkyl (C1-C4) ether; squalane; triacetin; sugars, such as glucose, xylitol, maltitol, sorbitol, sucrose pentaerythritol; inositol, pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, lactic acid, lithium chloride, acetamide MEA, sodium lactate, urea, dicyanamide, hyaluronic acid, aloe, honey and seaweed extract.

In some embodiments, the composition includes a humectant comprising glycerin.

According to various embodiments, the humectant may be present in the composition in an amount ranging from about 1 wt % to about 15 wt %, or from about 2 wt % to about 12 wt %, or from about 3 wt % to about 7 wt %, or from about 4 wt % to about 5 wt %, or any suitable combination, subcombination, range, or subrange thereof, based on the weight of the composition. However, one of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that other ranges are also within the scope of the present invention.

Thus, any one or combination of humectants may comprise from about 1 wt%, 2 wt%, 3 wt%, 4 wt%, 5 wt%, 6 wt%, 7 wt%, 8 wt%, 9 wt%, 10 wt%, 11 wt%, 12 wt%, 13 wt%, 14 wt% to about 15 wt%, including increments and ranges therebetween, based on the total weight of the composition.

Optional additives

The composition may also include at least one additive used in the cosmetic field that does not affect the properties of the composition according to the present invention, for example, an additive selected from the following: fragrances, pearlescent agents, silicon dioxide, proteins, protein hydrolysates, vitamins, panthenol, silicones, deodorants and coloring materials; essential oils; fruit extracts, such as apple (Pyrus Malus) fruit extract and Aloe Barbadens is leaf juice powder; citric acid, sodium chloride; neutralizing or pH adjusting agents (such as triethylamine (TEA) and sodium hydroxide) and combinations thereof.

Although optional active agent additives are given as examples, it will be appreciated that other optional components compatible with cosmetic applications known in the art may be used. According to various embodiments, one or more active agents and additives present in the composition, alone or in combination, may be present in the composition according to the present disclosure in an amount ranging from about 0.001 wt % to about 20 wt %, or from about 0.005 wt % to about 0.01 wt %, or from about 0.01 wt % to about 0.1 wt %, or from about 0.15 wt % to about 5 wt %, or from about 0.40 wt % to about 4 wt %, or from about 0.5 wt % to about 2.5 wt %, or from about 1 % to about 2 %, based on the total weight of the composition, or any suitable combination, subcombination, range or subrange thereof.

Substrate

According to various embodiments, an article is provided comprising a solid substrate impregnated with the antimicrobial system of the present invention, in some embodiments in the form of a makeup removal composition. The article can be formed from synthetic materials or from natural, biodegradable and sustainably sourced natural source fibers, natural fibers, or regenerated or recycled natural fibers.

According to some embodiments, substrate is a nonwoven material. In Riedel's "Nonwoven Bonding Methods and Materials", a general description of nonwoven materials is provided in Nonwoven World (1987). These substrates are obtained according to the conventional method of the technology for preparing nonwoven materials. When substrate is a nonwoven material, a nonwoven material that does not pill and is strong enough to not decompose and does not become fluffy when applied to skin can be used. It must have water absorption and softness at least on one side, especially when removing eye makeup. Mention may be made, as appropriate, of nonwoven materials, for example the flocked nonwovens sold under the names Ultraloft 15285-01, Ultraloft 182-008, Ultraloft 182-010 and Ultraloft 182-016 by BBA; Vilmed M1519 Blau, Vilmed M 1550N and 112-132-3 by Freudenberg; Norafin 11601-010B by Jacob Holm Industries, the flocked nonwovens sold under the names Univel 109 and Univel 119 by Uni Flockage, and materials made of viscose/PLA supplied by Sandler.

According to some embodiments including goods, water-insoluble substrate is adopted.Water-insoluble substrate can comprise one or more layers and it can be selected from the group consisting of woven material, nonwoven material, foam, sponge, soft padding, thin slice, ball or film.It can be especially based on following nonwoven substrate: the fiber of natural origin (flax, wool, cotton, silk, viscose, the fiber made of bamboo) or the fiber of synthetic origin (cellulose derivative, polyvinyl derivative, polyester (for example poly (ethylene terephthalate)), polyolefin (for example polyethylene (PET) or polypropylene), polyamide (for example nylon) or acrylic derivative) and their mixture, for example viscose/PET, polylactic acid (PLA) or viscose/polylactic acid (viscose/PLA).

According to one embodiment, the substrate is a nonwoven material composed of viscose or a nonwoven material composed of a viscose/microviscose mixture by a hydroentanglement process. In some specific embodiments, the article comprises nonwoven fibers, which are formed from fibers selected from the following natural biodegradable and sustainable sources: (1) natural source fibers including one or a combination of pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate and cotton; (2) natural fibers including one or a combination of hemp, flax, seaweed, ramie, banana and pineapple; and (3) regenerated or recycled fibers including cotton; and combinations of these fibers. According to one embodiment, the substrate is a nonwoven material formed from a biodegradable material, such as lyocell.

According to some embodiments, the article may comprise one or more layers having the same or different properties and having elastic and soft properties and other properties suitable for the desired use. The substrate may comprise, for example, two parts having different elastic properties, as described in document WO-A-99/13861, or may comprise a single layer having different densities, as described in document WO-A-99/25318, or may comprise two layers of different textures, as described in document WO-A-98/18441. According to some embodiments, when the article is used on the body, the article may comprise at least one rough surface so that the skin can be massaged or scrubbed at the same time.

According to various embodiments, the article can have any size and any shape suitable for the desired purpose. In addition, it generally has a surface area between ^0.005m2 and ^0.1m2 or between ^0.01m2 and ^0.05m2 . The weight of the substrate can range from 30gsm to 200gsm (grams per square meter) or from 40gsm to 60gsm.

According to various embodiments, the composition is impregnated onto the substrate to a degree generally ranging from 100% to 1000% by weight of the substrate, in some embodiments, from about 150% to about 700%, or from about 250% to about 400%. Techniques for impregnating substrates with compositions are well known and can be used in the present invention. Typically, the impregnation composition is heated and added to the substrate by one or more techniques, including dipping, coating, spraying, etc.

Various representative embodiments of the compositions of the present invention are illustrated herein. In some cases, the composition is an antimicrobial system. In some embodiments, the composition is a makeup remover in the form of an O/W emulsion, a W/O emulsion or a micellar water, a makeup remover wipe, or a two-phase (or multi-phase) makeup remover composition. In some specific exemplary embodiments, the composition is a makeup remover comprising an antimicrobial composition.

Exemplary embodiments of compositions of the present invention in the form of cleansing and makeup removal compositions (not impregnated in a substrate) according to the present disclosure are provided in Table 2.

Inventive Examples 1 and 2 are essentially the same compositions as the commercially available product sold under the DERMABLEND MAKEUP DISSOLVER brand, except that each includes an antimicrobial system that is free (or substantially free) of phenoxyethanol and pentylene glycol, and each includes the antimicrobial 4-hydroxyacetophenone and piroctone olamine. As reported in more detail in the context of consumer testing, the above table shows that each of the two inventive compositions has little or no irritation, particularly compared to the comparative compositions tested and to the overall eye irritation potential of the comparative category including a typical antimicrobial system.

Example 3: Comparison Example

Exemplary embodiments of comparative examples in the form of cleansing and makeup removal compositions (not impregnated in a substrate) according to the present disclosure are provided in Table 3.

Comparative Example 1 is a commercially available product sold under the brand name DERMABLEND MAKEUP DISSOLVER, including antimicrobial phenoxyethanol and caprylyl glycol (as representative of typical antimicrobial systems used in many cosmetics of the art of the present application). Comparative Example 2 is the same as Comparative Example 1, except that the phenoxyethanol is replaced with antimicrobial 4-hydroxyacetophenone. And Comparative Example 3 is the same as Comparative Example 1, except that the composition also includes antimicrobial ethylhexylglycerin. Comparative Example 4 is the same as Comparative Example 2, except that the hydroxyacetophenone is replaced with pentylene glycol. As reported in more detail in the context of the consumer testing, the table above shows that each of the four comparative examples is associated with moderate to high irritation.

Example 4: Antimicrobial Challenge Study

As shown in the following table, each of the inventive and comparative compositions was studied to evaluate their antimicrobial efficacy against a range of microorganisms. The results are shown in Tables 4-11.

Example 5: Consumer study on eye irritation and make-up removal (MUR) efficacy

A consumer study was conducted to evaluate eye irritation and/or discomfort and MUR efficacy of the inventive and comparative compositions. A sample of each of Inventive Example 1, Comparative Example 1, and Comparative Example 4 was provided to a group of 10 consumers. The consumers used the products daily over a two-week period and, after two weeks of use, participated in a survey. Eye irritation/discomfort and MUR efficacy were reported using a rating scale of 1-5 as follows:

Eye irritation/discomfort rating 1-5: 1 = no irritation, no discomfort; 5 = very irritating and discomfort

MUR effect. Rating 1-5: 1 = Cannot remove makeup or difficult to remove makeup; 5 = Easy and thorough removal of makeup

Table 12 presents the results, showing overall comparable (regarding MUR efficacy) and superior performance (regarding eye irritation) of the inventive composition compared to the comparative composition. (Note that subject * discontinued use of comparative composition 1 after 1 application due to eye irritation, as indicated).

Example 6: Inventive and comparative examples for makeup removing wipe products.

Table 13 shows the MUR juice formula, eye irritation and MUR test of the corresponding MUR wipes of the inventive examples and comparative examples. All wipes were prepared by impregnating the juice formula on a lyocell nonwoven nonwoven substrate at a soaking rate of 320%. The results clearly show that the eye irritation of the inventive example 3 is significantly reduced compared to the comparative example and the micro-challenge result is excellent.

Claims (19)

1. A cosmetic composition comprising: A. antimicrobial system, described antimicrobial system comprises: i. Antimicrobial agents including 4-hydroxyacetophenone; and ii. at least one additional antimicrobial agent comprising piroctone olamine; 2. The cosmetic composition according to claim 1, wherein the cosmetic composition is a makeup remover combination as one of an oil-in-water emulsion, a reverse phase (water-in-oil) emulsion, micellar water, and a multiphase composition thing. 3. The cosmetic composition according to claim 1, wherein said at least one additional antimicrobial agent comprises one or more antimicrobial agents selected from the group consisting of: octanediol, octyl Hydroxamic acid, chlorphenesin, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, benzyl alcohol, phenethyl alcohol, benzalkonium chloride, salts thereof, and combinations thereof. 4. The cosmetic composition according to claim 1, wherein said composition is free or substantially free of any one or more of pentylene glycol, parabens, ethanol, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde-derived compounds kind. 5. The cosmetic composition according to claim 1, wherein said composition is free or substantially free of parabens, formaldehyde and formaldehyde-derived compounds. 6. The cosmetic composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is free or substantially free of alcohols including one or more of ethanol and isopropanol. 7. The cosmetic composition according to claim 1, wherein said composition is free or substantially free of ingredients comprising pentyl glycol, phenoxyethanol, hexylglycerin, ethylhexylglycerin, octylglycerin, benzylglycerin, Any one or more of 3-heptanoyl-2,2-propanediol and 1,2-hexanediol as an antimicrobial agent. 8. The cosmetic composition of claim 1, wherein the antimicrobial agent comprising 4-hydroxyacetophenone comprises from about 0.2% to about 1% by weight of the composition; The at least one additional antimicrobial agent, when present, comprises from about 0.05% to about 1.5% by weight of the composition. 9. The cosmetic composition of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises from about 0.25% to about 2% by weight of said composition of 4-hydroxyacetophenone; The at least one additional antimicrobial agent, when present, comprises from about 0.05% to about 1.5% by weight of the composition. 10. A makeup remover composition, said makeup remover composition comprising: A. antimicrobial system, described antimicrobial system comprises: i. Antimicrobial agents including 4-hydroxyacetophenone; and ii. at least one additional antimicrobial agent comprising piroctone olamine; and b. Water-based cleaning system. 11. The cosmetic composition according to claim 10, wherein said water-based cleansing system comprises: i. one or more lipophilic emollients; ii. at least one thickener for water-based systems; iii. One or more humectants; and iv. water. 12. The cosmetic composition according to claim 11, wherein said at least one lipophilic emollient is selected from the group consisting of isohexadecane, C15-19 alkanes, isododecane, undecane, tridecane, carotene Isopropyl myristate, Dicapryl ether, Ethylhexyl palmitate, Isopropyl palmitate, Cetearyl ethylhexanoate, Isononyl isononanoate, Isopropyl isostearate, Diisopropyl Sebacate, Coco Caprylate/Caprate, Diisopropyl Adipate, Dimethicone, Silicone and combinations thereof. 13. The cosmetic composition according to claim 11, wherein said composition is said at least one thickener selected from the group consisting of Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Sodium Acrylate Copolymer , Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Hydroxypropyl Guar Gum, Carob (Carob) Gum, Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyltaurate, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Stearyl Polymer Ether-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer and Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6 and combinations thereof. 14. The cosmetic composition according to claim 11, wherein said at least one humectant comprises glycerin. 15. The cosmetic composition according to claim 11, further comprising: one or more additives selected from the group consisting of fragrance, pearlescent agent, silica, protein, protein hydrolyzate, vitamin, pan Alcohols, silicones, deodorants, coloring materials, essential oils, fruit extracts, citric acid, sodium chloride, neutralizing agents and combinations thereof. 16. A make-up removal and cleansing product comprising: a. Water-insoluble substrates, which include cosmetic wipes; b. a cosmetic composition impregnated in said water-insoluble substrate, said cosmetic composition comprising an antimicrobial system comprising: i. Antimicrobial agents including 4-hydroxyacetophenone; and ii. at least one additional antimicrobial agent comprising piroctone olamine. 17. The make-up removing and cleansing article according to claim 16, wherein the cleansing composition is impregnated to the water-insoluble on the substrate. 18. The make-up removal and cleansing article according to claim 16, wherein said article is a makeup-removing wipe comprising nonwoven fibers of natural biodegradable and Sustainably sourced fiber formation: (1) naturally sourced fibers including one or a combination of pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate, and cotton; (2) including hemp, flax, seaweed, natural fibers of one or a combination of ramie, banana, and pineapple; and (3) regenerated or recycled fibers including cotton; and combinations of these fibers. 19. A cosmetic composition comprising: A. antimicrobial system, described antimicrobial system comprises: i. Antimicrobial agents including 4-hydroxyacetophenone; and ii. at least one additional antimicrobial agent comprising piroctone olamine; and b. A skin care system selected from the group consisting of: i. Two-phase water-based cleaning system; ii. Multiphase water-based cleaning system; iii. Single phase micellar water based cleansing systems; and iv. A topical composition as one of a serum, essence, face or mask.
