背景技术
虫胶已被用作包括食品在内的多种产品的涂层很多年。例如,虫胶已被用作甜食的上光剂(glazing agent)很多年,所述甜食为例如巧克力覆盖的葡萄干、巧克力覆盖的坚果、口香糖球(gum ball)、果冻豆(jelly bean)等。此外,虫胶还被用作维生素、药片、各种时间释放制剂以及各种水果(如苹果等)的整体和部分的保护涂层和浆汁(glaze)很多年。此外,许多专利和其他出版物记载了使用虫胶作为多种食品(包括甜甜圈)的上光剂。参见例如U.S.6,869,628的背景部分以及U.S.2004/0096548的[0006]段。
因为虫胶在熔融时容易聚合,所以实际上其并不用于以熔融形式来涂覆基底。相反,必须将虫胶溶解或分散在合适的挥发性载体液体中以产生足够呈液体(即足够流动)从而用作有效的涂层组合物的虫胶涂层组合物。
发明内容
根据本发明,已发现,虫胶在熔融时的聚合能够通过将其与少量但合适量的脂肪酸结合来抑制。因此,提供了新的虫胶涂层组合物,就含有最少且优选不含挥发性载体液体而言其为无溶剂型的,已发现简单加热这些组合物将使其足够呈液体而用作有效的涂层组合物。
因此,本发明提供一种用于在基底上制备虫胶涂层的虫胶涂层组合物,所述虫胶涂层组合物包含脂肪酸组分和虫胶,其中所述脂肪酸组分与所述虫胶的重量比为5:95至95:5,并且此外其中所述涂层组合物还含有不超过10重量%的挥发性载体液体,所述挥发性液体在25℃下具有0.02atm(15.9torr)以上的平衡蒸汽压。
此外,本发明还提供一种用于在基底上提供虫胶涂层的方法,其包括将该涂层组合物施用到基底上。
具体实施方式
定义
为了本公开内容的目的,“涂层组合物”是指能够用于在基底上形成涂层的组合物,但不包括已在基底上以涂层形式存在的组合物。因此,例如,涂层组合物可为涂布液的形式,其可被倾倒或喷涂到基底上,例如形成完整的涂层。此外,涂层组合物也能够为固体的形式,例如粉末、颗粒、薄片或甚至巨大的固体块,其可融化形成所述涂布液。然而,为了本公开内容的目的,“涂层组合物”将理解为不是指由这种涂布液产生的涂层。因此,例如,已经被浇铸在基底上并保留在该基底上的膜不是本公开内容的上下文中的“涂层组合物”,因为其是完整的涂层的形式。然而,如果将该膜从基底上除去,则将其视为“涂层组合物”,至少是在其可用于例如通过熔化等形成新的涂层的情况下。
此外,关于涂层组合物的“液体”意指所述涂层组合物具有足够低的粘度,从而在沉积到水平基底上并保持不受干扰之后,其会在该基底上形成连续的连贯涂层。此外,在本公开内容的上下文中,“连续”的涂层意指不是以离散的团块或区域的形式存在而是以融合的整体(amalgamated mass)的形式存在的涂层。此外,在本公开内容的上下文中,“连贯”的涂层意指没有孔洞和针孔的涂层。
虫胶树脂
虫胶是由雌性紫胶虫(lac bug)的分泌而获得的天然的热塑性树脂。其具有显著的结合的性质,使其成为一种理想的阻隔涂层,这些性质包括对氧气、水蒸气、CO2、乙烯和各种气味的低渗透性,低脂溶性,优异的颜色和优异的透明度。其主要成分是紫胶桐酸(aleuritic acid)和壳脑酸(shelloic acid)。
在商业上,虫胶有两种不同的类型,漂白虫胶和橙色虫胶。此外,这两种虫胶均可以精制(即脱蜡)以及未精制(常规)的形式获得。此外,这四种不同品种的虫胶中的每一种均可以不同的物理性质获得,例如固体薄片以及水性和/或醇溶液。此外,这些不同品种中的一些也可以以不同的等级获得。例如,脱蜡的橙色虫胶可以从黄色到红色的各种不同的等级获得。
虫胶由粗虫胶(seedlac)(一种昆虫分泌物)获得,其通过从粗虫胶中除去残渣然后进一步处理该粗虫胶获得所需产物来获得。如U.S.6,348,217(其全部公开内容通过引用的方式纳入本说明书)中所记载,漂白虫胶通过将粗虫胶溶解在碱性水溶液中,然后加入漂白剂如次氯酸钠来制备。然后使如此获得的产物沉淀并干燥以制备常规的漂白虫胶。或者,在沉淀和干燥前,溶解的漂白虫胶能够通过已知技术精制来除去所含的蜡,从而制备脱蜡的漂白虫胶。相比之下,常规的橙色虫胶通过将粗虫胶熔化、筛分出不溶物然后使所获得的产品固化并剥离来制备。同时,脱蜡的橙色虫胶通过将粗虫胶溶解在醇中、使不溶物溶解、过滤出蜡颗粒并且在固化和剥离前将如此获得的溶液通过活性炭脱色来制备。
这些不同形式的虫胶具有略微不同的熔化温度。不幸的是,所有这些形式的虫胶在加热到其熔化温度以上时都容易聚合。因此,在由虫胶制备涂层组合物时必须将虫胶溶解或分散在挥发性载体液体中。可用于该目的的合适的载体液体的实例包括,水,各种醇如甲醇、乙醇、异丙醇等,各种酮如丙酮、甲基乙基酮等,各种二醇如丙二醇等,各种二醇醚,各种酯如乙酸乙酯等。一般而言,这些挥发性载体液体的平衡蒸汽压高于0.02atm(15.9torr)。例如,在25℃下水的通常的平衡蒸汽压为0.03atm(22.8torr),在25℃下乙醇为0.077atm(58.5torr),以及在25℃下2-丙醇0.059atm(44.8torr)。
根据本发明,避免了使用这种挥发性载体液体,已发现,所有市售形式和等级的虫胶在加热至其熔点以上时的聚合均可通过将虫胶与脂肪酸组分共混得以抑制,其在下文进一步讨论。这对于对这些挥发性载体液体敏感的涂层基底是特别重要的,因为可以完全避免基底与这些载体液体的接触。这些基底的实例包括烘培产品如饼干、曲奇、威化、华夫饼和冰淇淋卷托(cone),以及各种水敏感的干产品如面粉、谷物、种子和某些坚果。
就避免使用挥发性有机化合物而言这也是重要的。通常用于制备常规虫胶涂层组合物的乙醇和其他有机液体是高度易燃的,并且根据相关的联邦和州的法规和规定分类为挥发性有机化合物(VOC)。因此,当使用这些VOC中的一种或多种作为其载体液体配制的虫胶涂层组合物时,必须要相当小心并考虑相当高的费用。这些问题可通过本发明完全避免,因为完全不需要这些VOC。
本发明的虫胶涂层组合物的另一个重要特征在于其所制备的虫胶涂层对“白化(blushing)”具有很高的抗性。如本领域所理解的,当由常规的虫胶涂层组合物制备的虫胶涂层暴露于水时,其通常产生明显的白色混浊,这在本领域中称为“白化”。根据本发明,基本上避免了这个问题,因为由本发明的虫胶涂层组合物制备的虫胶涂层在很大程度上抵抗了这种白化现象。
脂肪酸组分
脂肪酸是其碳链含有4至28个碳原子的脂族羧酸。脂肪酸可为饱和的以及具有一个、两个、三个、四个或更多个烯键式不饱和基团的不饱和的。其脂族尾链含有少于六个碳原子的脂肪酸通常被认为是短链脂肪酸(SCFA)。其脂族尾链含有6-12个碳原子的脂肪酸通常被认为是中链脂肪酸(MCFA)。其脂族尾链含有13-21个碳原子的脂肪酸通常被认为是长链脂肪酸(LCFA)。其脂族尾链含有22个或更多个碳原子的脂肪酸通常被认为是极长链脂肪酸(VLCFA)。大多数天然脂肪酸具有偶数个碳原子。所有这些脂肪酸均可用作本发明的虫胶涂层组合物的脂肪酸组分。
除了上述“游离”脂肪酸之外,还可以使用许多脂肪酸衍生物用于此目的。实例包括这种游离脂肪酸与含有8个或更少碳原子的一元醇或二元醇的酯、脂肪酸甘油单酯、脂肪酸甘油二酯、脂肪酸甘油三酯、脂肪酸磷脂、脂肪醇及其混合物。游离脂肪酸与一元醇或二元醇的酯以及脂肪酸甘油单酯、甘油二酯和甘油三酯是引人关注的,而游离脂肪酸,且尤其是油酸、硬脂酸和棕榈酸是特别引人关注的。
如工业上所理解的,这些游离脂肪酸和类似物可以各种不同的等级获得,例如食品级、工业级等。所有这些不同等级均可用于本发明,理想的当然是为特定应用所选择的特定等级符合适用于该应用的法律规定。
其他成分
除虫胶和脂肪酸组分之外,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物还能够含有其他成分以改善这些涂层组合物以及其所制备的涂层的性质。
例如,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物能够含有阻聚剂以促进减缓虫胶的聚合,其实例包括氢氧化钠、氢氧化钾和乙酸钾。
此外,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物可含有有机来源(即植物或动物来源)共成膜剂。实例包括某些微晶纤维素;蜡如石蜡、巴西棕榈蜡、蜂蜡、小烛树蜡和聚乙烯蜡;各种天然树脂如木材树脂;和香豆酮-茚(coumarone-indene);以及各种蛋白质,包括玉米蛋白(α-玉米蛋白、β-玉米蛋白和/或v-玉米蛋白)、小麦谷蛋白、大豆蛋白、花生蛋白、角蛋白、胶原蛋白,明胶、乳蛋白(酪蛋白)和乳清蛋白。
本发明的虫胶涂层组合物还能够含有其他类型的成膜剂,包括不具有上述抗水蒸汽性质的有机来源的成膜材料。实例包括微晶纤维素;淀粉和衍生物如生淀粉、改性淀粉、预胶化淀粉、糊精、麦芽糖糊精玉米糖浆蔗糖(maltodextrin corn syrup sucrose)、葡萄糖/果糖和糖多元醇;挤出胶如阿拉伯树胶(gum arabic)、印度树胶(gum ghatti)、刺梧桐胶(gum karaya)和黄蓍胶(gum tragacanth);种子胶如瓜尔胶和刺槐豆胶;微生物发酵胶如黄原胶(xanthan)、加利安胶(gallan gum)和壳聚糖;海藻提取物如琼脂、藻酸盐、角叉菜胶和红藻胶;以及果胶。
本发明的虫胶涂层组合物还可含有除脂质如聚乙二醇(PEG)、聚丙二醇(PPG)等之外的增塑剂;着色剂如有机颜料和无机颜料、染料和其他天然存在的着色剂;调味剂和防腐剂。
为了有助于其在粉末形式下应用于基底,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物还可含有常规的流动控制剂,例如硅酸盐,硬脂酸盐等。
当然,还可使用这些不同的其他成分的混合物。
制备方法
本发明的虫胶涂层组合物可通过以下步骤容易地制备,将脂肪酸组分加热至高于虫胶的熔化温度,然后将虫胶优选以粉碎的固体的形式,且优选以增量的方式加入到脂肪酸组分中,同时继续加热并混合,直到得到均匀的共混物。优选此时添加任何其他成分,但是如果需要,其可更早加入。
当本发明的虫胶涂层组合物旨在通过挤出涂布施用于基底时,另一种制备方法可为通过将其成分一起合并到用于向挤出机进料的共同进料料斗中,或者通过将这些成分通过单独的进料料斗进料至挤出机,同时这些成分在挤出机内混合在一起,其熔化并将这些材料沉积在被涂覆的基底上。
成分的比例和性质
本发明的虫胶涂层组合物中的虫胶和脂肪酸的相对量可广泛变化,且基本上可以任意量使用。通常,脂肪酸组分与虫胶的重量比为5:95至95:5。在这些宽泛的范围内,引人关注的是含有不超过80重量%的脂肪酸组分的虫胶涂层组合物,基于脂肪酸组分和虫胶的合并重量计,更引人关注的是含有不超过65重量%的脂肪酸组分、不超过50重量%的脂肪酸组分、不超过45重量%的脂肪酸组分、不超过40重量%的脂肪酸组分、不超过35重量%的脂肪酸组分以及甚至不超过30重量%的脂肪酸组分的虫胶涂层组合物,基于同样的重量计。通常,脂肪酸组分与虫胶的重量比为10:90至50:50。
如果本发明的虫胶涂层组合物中包含其他成分,则本发明的虫胶涂层组合物中的这些其他成分的总量(浓度)理想地不超过25重量%,基于整个涂层组合物的重量计。更理想地,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物中的这些其他成分的总量(浓度)不超过15重量%、不超过10重量%、不超过5重量%、不超过2重量%、不超过1重量%或甚至不超过0.5重量%。
如上所述,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物不含或基本上不含在25℃下的平衡蒸汽压高于0.02atm(15.9torr)的挥发性载体液体。因此,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物不含或基本上不含水(在25℃下的蒸汽压为0.03atm/23.8torr)、乙醇(在25℃下的蒸汽压为0.077atm/59torr)和2-丙醇(在25℃下的蒸汽压为0.059atm/45torr)。在本上下文中,“基本上不含”意指本发明的虫胶涂层组合物含有不超过10重量%的挥发性载体液体。然而,更普遍地,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物含有不超过5重量%、不超过2重量%、不超过1重量%、不超过0.5重量%或甚至不超过0.1重量%的这种挥发性载体液体。尽管如此,为了涂布的目的,其可容易地通过将其加热至高于其所含有的虫胶成分的熔化温度而转化为液态。
如前所述,根据本发明已发现,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物的脂肪酸组分用作聚合抑制剂,从而抑制这些组合物的虫胶成分在加热至高温时的聚合。因此,提供了新的虫胶涂层组合物,其基本上不含挥发性载体液体但可通过简单加热使其足够呈液体而用作有效的涂层组合物。
本发明的虫胶涂层组合物的物理形式可广泛变化。根据虫胶和脂肪酸组分的相对量,脂肪酸组分的类型和任选的其他添加剂(如果有的话)的类型,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物可采取以下形式:粘稠液体,糊状半固态(即,过于粘稠以至于不能通过重力流动,但又不是硬固体)例如黄油或蜂蜡,或室温下的固体硬块。此外,如果处于固态,其可采取包括大固体块、块、颗粒状固体、细粉末以及甚至是通过从基底除去流延薄膜(cast film)而产生的薄膜在内的任意结构。此外,如果在室温下处于固态,其可呈现宽范围的熔点或软化点,通常为10℃至90℃。在这个宽范围内,更引人关注的是呈现出至少20℃、至少30℃、至少40℃和至少50℃的熔点或软化点的那些。
由本发明的虫胶涂层组合物制备的虫胶涂层的物理和化学性质也可广泛变化,这取决于虫胶和脂肪酸组分的相对量、脂肪酸组分的类型以及在这些涂层组合物中所包含的任选的其他添加剂(如果存在的话)的类型。通过适当选择这些变量,普通的虫胶化学家应该不难制备出具有与常规技术所制备的虫胶涂层相同或基本相同的硬度、柔性、阻隔性以及其他性质的虫胶涂层组合物。
基底
本发明的虫胶涂层组合物能够用于在任意和所有类型的之前提供有虫胶涂层的基底上提供虫胶涂层。例如,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物能够用于在诸如木材、金属、塑料等的工业基底上提供虫胶涂层。此外,可食用的基底包括水果如苹果、梨等;蔬菜:烘焙产品如饼干、曲奇、威化、华夫饼和冰淇淋卷托和其他面团类产品;糖果如固体巧克力棒、糖果锭剂(pastilles)等以及巧克力涂覆或包裹产品巧克力涂覆的饼干和曲奇;药物如药丸、锭剂(lozenges)等也可用本发明的虫胶涂层涂覆,为此目的理想的当然是使用食物等级的成分和加工设备。旨在与食品和/或药物接触的产品如纤维箱板、食品托盘,器皿等也可用本发明的虫胶涂层组合物涂覆,为此目的理想的仍然是使用批准的食物接触等级的成分和加工设备。
在本发明的一个实施方案中,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物能够用于形成流延的独立膜。在该实施例中,为此目的,可使用用于由其他类似材料制备流延的独立膜的常规的基底。
施用方法
本发明的虫胶涂层组合物能够通过任何合适的涂覆技术施用到基底上,其实例包括喷涂(传统和静电喷涂技术)、浸涂、包裹、流延(cast)、挤出涂布、盘涂和辊涂。通常,这意味着如果在室温下处于固态,则本发明的涂层组合物需要加热,直到在将涂层组合物施用于其基底之前组合物呈液态。因此,例如,如果本发明的涂层组合物通过浸涂、包裹、流延、热熔喷涂、辊涂或某些类型的盘涂技术而施用,则涂层组合物通常在施用之前加热至液态。由于本发明的虫胶涂层组合物的脂肪酸组分抑制了这些组合物中的虫胶成分的聚合,所以这很少关心或不关心。
在某些应用中,本发明的虫胶涂层组合物能够作为涂覆方法的一部分而加热至液态。例如,如果本发明的虫胶涂层组合物通过挤出涂布技术施用,则可发生这种情况。此外,如果本发明的虫胶涂层组合物通过某些类型的喷涂技术施用,例如通过熔喷或通过静电喷涂干粉形式的组合物,则也可发生这种情况。如果将颗粒形式的本发明的虫胶涂层组合物施用到预先已经足够加热以至于基底中的潜热使颗粒融化从而形成涂层的基底,则也可能发生这种情况。在某些情况下,如果需要,可使用额外的加热步骤来在施用粉末之后对基底进行加热。必要时可在施用前后均进行加热。
当直接施用到烘焙产品基底例如饼干、曲奇、威化、冰淇淋卷托和其他面团类产品时,本发明的涂层组合物的特定优点在于保留了下面的基底的脆性。由于涂层组合物中的载体液体通常被烘焙产品基底吸收,所以以此方式使用常规的虫胶涂层组合物是困难的或不可能的。当使用本发明的虫胶涂层组合物时,由于不含载体液体,故避免了该问题。
在另一个应用中,本发明的涂层组合物用作待添加到基底表面的组分的粘合剂或载体。例如,通过用已用食物佐剂强化的本发明的涂层组合物进行涂覆,可将各种食物佐剂如药物、医药、疫苗、食品补充剂等添加到许多不同类型的食物基底如全谷物、面包、面粉和其他食品中。
最后,当以细粉末形式存在时,本发明的涂层组合物还可用作抛光剂,这通过将其与一批待处理的基底(例如药片、糖果等)在合适的混合装置(如平移设备和翻转设备)中合并来实现,这些装置在这些材料之间产生足够的摩擦,从而在基底上产生抛光表面。这种抛光工艺可增强基底的表面特性,增加抛光效果,以及产生提供滑动特性、防潮性等的涂层。
工作实施例
实施例1
制备以下热熔共混物:

为制备以上表1中所列出的共混物,将各组合物的脂肪酸在合适的容器(适当尺寸的铝盘或玻璃烧杯)中加热至高于精制(脱蜡)橙色虫胶的熔点。缓慢混合后,脱蜡的橙色虫胶逐步熔化并混合到熔融脂肪酸中。从这一点开始,使熔融共混物冷却以形成处于其固相的本发明的热熔混合物。
每种共混物均产生不透明的半可延展性固体,其能够在再加热至高于其熔点时恢复到熔融状态。上述热熔共混物的软化点为约60℃至85℃。
实施例2
制备以下热熔共混物:

为制备以上表2中所列出的共混物,将所选择的脂肪酸在合适的容器(适当尺寸的铝盘或玻璃烧杯)中加热至高于每个实施例中所使用的虫胶类型的熔点。缓慢混合后,合适量的虫胶逐步熔化并混合到熔融脂肪酸中。从这一点开始,使熔融共混物冷却以形成处于其固相的每种本发明的热熔混合物。每种共混物均产生不透明的半可延展性固体,以供进一步使用。
实施例3
通过与上述实施例1和2相同的方法制备热熔共混物,其包含:43重量份的脱蜡的橙色虫胶和57重量份的油酸和硬脂酸的混合物。将该熔融产物施用于适合于成品释放的卡片纸的涂覆片材,然后使产物冷却至固态。然后将如此形成的固体产物从基底上除去并研磨成大小约1英寸(~645mm2)的薄片。
实施例4
将以上实施例3中制备的一部分薄片置于设计用于喷雾施用蜡的热熔喷枪的进料室(由Glue Machinery Corporation提供)中,并使其在设定温度下熔化10分钟的时间。
熔化后,将组合物以涂覆的可食用基底的总干重的约18%的施用量喷涂到可食用的华夫饼基底上。然后将所施用的组合物冷却至室温,从而形成固体虫胶涂层,其为基底提供了额外或增强的性质,包括增强的物理外观、增强的强化和增强的阻隔性,如对液体如水、奶和融化的冰淇淋以及由此类液体所产生的蒸汽的渗透的增强的抗性。
尽管以上仅描述了几个实施例,但是应当理解,在不脱离本发明的精神和范围的情况下,可进行许多修改。所有这些修改均旨在包括在本发明的范围内,本发明将仅由以下权利要求来限定。
Claims (10)
1.一种制品,包括

在所述基底上的虫胶基涂层,
所述虫胶基涂层包含聚合被抑制的虫胶,其中所述虫胶基涂层是由包含脂肪酸组分和虫胶的涂层组合物形成,
其中,所述脂肪酸组分与所述虫胶的重量比为5:95至95:5,其中所述涂层组合物含有不超过10重量%的挥发性载体液体,所述挥发性载体液体在25℃下具有高于0.02atm的平衡蒸汽压。
2.根据权利要求1所述的制品,其中,通过熔融喷涂、浸涂、包裹、流延、挤出涂布、盘涂和辊涂中的至少一种将所述虫胶基涂层施用至所述基底。
3.根据权利要求1所述的制品,其中,所述涂层组合物包含一种或多种其他成分,所述其他成分选自由除脂肪酸组分之外的虫胶增塑剂、除脂肪酸组分之外的虫胶聚合阻聚剂、防粘剂、着色剂、共成膜剂、调味剂和防腐剂组成的组,并且进一步地,其中基于整个涂层组合物的重量,涂层组合物中这些其他成分的总量不超过25重量%。
4.根据权利要求1所述的制品,其中,所述涂料组合物含有不超过5wt%的挥发性载体液体。
5.根据权利要求1所述的制品,其中,所述基底包括烘焙产品或水敏感的干产品。
6.根据权利要求1所述的制品,其中,所述基底包括饼干、曲奇、威化、冰淇淋卷托和其他面团类产品。
7.一种制品,包括
烘焙基底和
在所述基底上的涂层,
所述涂层包括脂肪酸组分与虫胶的混合物,其中在所述混合物中所述脂肪酸组分与所述虫胶的重量比为5:95至57:43,
其中,所述混合物已被加热至高于所述虫胶的熔点的温度,并保持足够长的时间,以使得所述虫胶在不存在所述脂肪酸组分的情况下进一步聚合,基于所述混合物的整体重量,所述混合物含有不超过10重量%的挥发性载体液体,在被如此加热的时间内,所述挥发性载体液体在25℃下具有高于0.02atm(15.9托)的平衡蒸汽压,
并且其中,基于所述混合物的整体重量,所述混合物含有不超过10重量%的挥发性载体液体,所述挥发性载体液体在25℃下具有高于0.02atm(15.9托)的平衡蒸汽压。
8.根据权利要求7所述的制品,其中,所述基底包括饼干、曲奇、威化、冰淇淋卷托和其它基于面团的产品。
9.根据权利要求7所述的制品,其中,所述混合物含有一种或多种其他成分,所述其他成分选自由除脂肪酸组分之外的虫胶增塑剂、除脂肪酸组分之外的虫胶聚合阻聚剂、防粘剂、着色剂、共成膜剂、调味剂和防腐剂组成的组,并且进一步地,其中基于整个混合物的重量,所述混合物中的这些其他成分的总量不超过25重量%。
10.根据权利要求7所述的制品,其中,所述混合物含有不超过5wt%的挥发性载体液体。
