Abstract

Description

Ring binding device

The present invention relates to a ring binding device, and more particularly to a ring binding device suitable for being fastened to a cover-like article by fastening means such as rivets. The invention also relates to a fastening device for fastening a ring binder to a cover-like article.

Conventional ring binders include a substantially rigid upper cover that supports a pair of plates. A plurality of half-ring elements are mounted on the plate. The pair of plates are pivotable relative to each other between a first position in which the half-ring members are closed for holding loose-leaf pages and a second position in which the half-ring members are open for insertion of loose-leaf pages or Remove the loose-leaf paper from the half-ring element. Such conventional ring binders typically provide a pair of rivets secured to the cover, each rivet near a longitudinal end of the ring binder. The rivet typically includes a head that engages the cover of the device and a plurality of prongs that penetrate the cover, thereby securing the ring binding device to the cover.

Various methods and devices have been devised to enhance the fit between the rivet and the cover, and thus between the ring binder and the cover. One such improvement involves the use of anchor plates with rivets. The anchor plate has a lower surface which bears against the cover when the rivet and ring binder is secured to the cover. By means of this structure, the ring binding device can withstand a relatively large lateral pulling force.

It is an object of the present invention to propose an improved ring binding device and related fastening device which is capable of withstanding greater pulling forces, or which at least provides the consumer with a useful choice.

Figures 1, 2 show a first embodiment of a ring binding device, indicated generally at 10, according to the invention. The ring binder includes a curved cover 12 supporting a pair of plates 14 . Three half-ring elements 16 are secured to each plate 14 . At each longitudinal end of the ring binding device 10 there is an operating handle 18 which can be pivoted outwards, thereby pivoting the plates and thus opening the half-ring elements 16 . When the half-rings have been pushed together 16, the half-rings can be closed.

A rivet 20 is secured to the curved cover 12 proximate each longitudinal end of the ring binder 10 . As shown more clearly in Figures 5A, 5B, the rivet 20 comprises a hollow cylindrical body 22 which is substantially perpendicular to an anchor plate 24 which has a generally rectangular shape. The cylindrical post 22 has an open upper end which is deformable to fit the curved cover 12 . Six central prongs 28 depend downwardly from anchor plate 24 and are integral therewith. The central jaw 28 extends curved outwards generally away from the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical cylinder.

Six side claws 30 depend downwardly from opposite edges of the anchor plate 24, three side claws 30 on each side. The side claws are generally perpendicular to the surface of the anchor plate 24 . The cylindrical post 22, anchor plate 24, central jaw 28 and side jaws 30 are all formed in one piece.

As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the ring binder 10 may be secured by rivets 20 to a cover 32, which may be made of cardboard or PVC (polyvinyl chloride). It can be seen that the central jaw 28 and side jaws 30 penetrate the cover 32 and hold the ring binder 10 from movement relative to the cover. To further enhance the fit between rivet 20 and cover 32 , rivet 20 is wider than curved cover 12 . Each lateral side of the rivet 20 extends beyond a corresponding lateral side of the curved cover 12 .

Figures 6 to 9 show a second embodiment of a ring binding device, indicated generally at 100, according to the present invention. Similar to the ring binding device 10 shown in FIGS. 1 to 5B , the ring binding device 100 includes a curved cover 102 supporting a pair of plates 104 . Three half-ring elements 106 are secured to each plate 104 . At each longitudinal end of the ring binding device 100 is provided an operating handle 108 .

A rivet 110 is secured to the curved cover 102 proximate each longitudinal end of the ring binder 100 . As shown more clearly in Figures 10A, 10B, the rivet 110 comprises a centrally located hollow cylindrical post 112 substantially perpendicular to an anchor plate 114, which has a generally rectangular shape. The cylindrical post 112 has an open upper end that is deformable to fit the curved cover 102 . Depending from and integrally formed with the anchor plate 114 are six central prongs 118 that extend generally curved outwardly away from the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical body 112 .

Six outer prongs 120 depend downwardly from two opposite edges of the anchor plate 114, with a row of three outer prongs 120 on each side edge. The two rows of outer detents 120 on each opposing edge of the anchor plate 114 extend generally inward toward the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical post 112 . Adjacent to each row of outer jaws 120, there is a side-by-side row of inner jaws 122, each row having two jaws. The row of inner claws 122 extends substantially in the same direction as the adjacent outer claws 120 extend. The inner jaw 122 and the outer jaw 120 point in the same direction, and the angle between the anchor plate and each inner jaw 122 and outer jaw 120 is approximately the same. The central hollow cylindrical cylinder 112, the anchor plate 114, the central jaw 118, the inner jaw 122 and the outer jaw 120 are all integrally formed.

Referring to Figures 11 to 14, a third embodiment of a ring binding apparatus according to the present invention is indicated generally at 200. Similar to the ring binding device 10 shown in FIGS. 1 to 5B , the ring binding device 200 includes a curved cover 202 supporting a pair of plates 204 . Three half-ring elements 206 are secured to each plate 204 . At each longitudinal end of the ring binding device 100 is provided an operating handle 208 .

Rivets 210 are secured to the curved cover 202 proximate each longitudinal end of the ring binder 200 . As shown more clearly in Figures 15A, 15B, the rivet 210 comprises a central hollow cylindrical post 212 which is substantially perpendicular to an anchor plate 214 which has a generally rectangular shape. The cylindrical post 212 has an open upper end 216 that is deformable to fit the curved cover 202 . Depending from and integrally formed with the anchor plate 214 are six central prongs 218 that extend generally curved outwardly away from the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical body 212 .

Six outer prongs 220 depend downwardly from two opposing edges of the anchor plate 214, with a row of three outer prongs 220 on each side edge. The two rows of outer detents 220 on each opposing edge of the anchor plate 214 extend generally inward toward the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical post 212 . Adjacent to each row of outer jaws 220, there is a side-by-side row of inner jaws 222, each row having two jaws. The row of inner jaws 222 extends generally in the direction of the outer jaws 220 adjacent thereto. The inner claw 222 and the outer claw 220 face each other and point toward each other. The central hollow cylindrical cylinder 212, the anchor plate 214, the central jaw 218, the inner jaw 222 and the outer jaw 220 are all integrally formed.

With the device discussed above, when a lateral (i.e., transverse to the longitudinal direction of the ring binding device 10, 100 or 200) pulling force is applied to the ring binding device 10, 100 or 200, the force bearing point is located at the anchor plate The transverse edges of 14, 114 or 214 are farther from the longitudinal axis of ring binding device 10, 100 or 200 when compared to conventional ring binding devices.
