Description
RELATED APPLICATIONS
This application is related to and claims priority from the '201641044100-print patent application entitled Frameless Door Handle Assembly With Modular inertial Locking Mechanism (Frameless Door Handle Assembly With Modular inertial Locking Mechanism)', filed on 2016, 12, 23, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
Technical Field
The present invention relates to door handle assemblies and, more particularly, to a frameless door handle assembly having a safety system for, for example, a modular inertial locking mechanism, thereby providing a measure of safety against inadvertent door opening that may occur during a vehicle collision.
Background
Conventional door handles have a frame assembly part disposed on the door panel that acts as a handle assembly reinforcement. However, this frame-type door handle assembly would increase the number of parts and the weight of the door handle assembly. Furthermore, the frame-type door handle assembly has the disadvantage that it results in a very bulky design, which results in a need for more space. To overcome these disadvantages, frameless door handle assemblies have been developed.
Frameless door handle assemblies typically have a handle portion that is pivotable relative to a base portion, and these vehicle doors typically include a latch mechanism for locking and unlocking the door. A handle assembly positioned on the door assembly operates to control the latch mechanism and the locking mechanism to selectively enable or disable operation of the latch by the handle assembly. The frameless door handle assembly is installed from the exterior of the vehicle by inserting the door handle assembly through an aperture in the exterior skin of the vehicle door, and then secured via nuts and screws at the respective side portions of the door handle assembly.
A major disadvantage of existing frameless door handle assemblies is that the handle portions tend to swing or pivot outwardly during a vehicle collision and can open the doors of the vehicle during the collision. Side impacts to the vehicle, such as from a bump, cause the handle assembly to inadvertently move to the latch release position, the latch to then move to the unlocked position, and the door to inadvertently open.
Reliable control of the vehicle door is generally not problematic when the door is in a locked or latched position. The most common situation in operating a vehicle is that a side impact can easily cause the door handle to coast to its unlocked position, causing an unbelted vehicle occupant to be thrown and injured from the vehicle.
Various attempts have been made to overcome the side impact problem and, in particular, to avoid inadvertent opening of the door in the event of a side impact. The most commonly used method is to consider the placement of heavy weights, but this is not possible on this handle assembly due to space and weight constraints. Furthermore, this would result in the door handle assembly being extremely difficult to open, and this conventional arrangement has the disadvantage that the door handle assembly may be subjected to side impact forces without inadvertent opening of the door.
Furthermore, conventional arrangements for overcoming the effects of the impact problem are complex and incur more expensive mounting techniques. Furthermore, existing locking mechanisms in door handle assemblies for protection against collisions and inadvertent opening are made of molded parts having a pivotable rotation that may block travel during certain side impacts, but not a permanent block.
Accordingly, there is a need to provide an improved frameless door handle assembly which overcomes the disadvantages of conventional locking mechanisms and which also provides a modular inertial locking mechanism as a safety system against inadvertent door opening that may occur during a vehicle collision.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide a frameless door handle assembly which resists inadvertent opening movement of the handle.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a frameless door handle assembly having simple and cost-effective installation steps for assembling the door handle assembly with a vehicle door.
Disclosure of Invention
The present invention, which accomplishes these objectives, relates to a door handle assembly having a safety system (e.g., a modular inertial locking mechanism) for providing a measure of safety against inadvertent door opening that may occur during a vehicle collision. The safety device in the door handle assembly according to the present invention is intended to resist the inadvertent opening of the door handle and control the latch of the door, thus providing a safety measure against lateral mechanical impacts that may occur due to a vehicle collision.
The door handle assembly has a handle and a hook assembly on one end and a cover assembly on the other end, the door handle assembly being assembled into a handle opening in the door panel. The handle assembly is mounted on the door panel by passing the handle assembly through an opening in the outer skin of the door panel. The hook assembly has a door panel locking mechanism pivotally secured via a pivot pin and secured with the door panel via a screw and nut. The lid assembly has an outer lid, an inertia cartridge assembly snapped within the outer lid, and a bell crank assembly configured to connect to and control the latch of the door.
The bell crank assembly has a bell crank and a bell crank activator received in the bell crank to actuate the bell crank to lock and unlock the latch within the door. The bell crank is pivotally secured via a pivot pin and pivotally secured with the outer cover by a spring load such that operation of the handle activates the bell crank activator to move the bell crank in a door unlocking direction. An abutment is formed at one end of the bell crank to connect with the latch assembly of the door and control the latching and unlatching of the latch in the door. The bell crank rotates about an axis of the bell crank when activated by the bell crank activator and converts rotational movement of the handle into linear movement of the latch.
The inertia cartridge assembly has a cartridge and leaf spring loaded balls contained within the cartridge. Operation of the handle allows the bell crank activator to activate the bell crank to move it toward the unlocking direction. Whenever there is a side impact or vehicle collision, due to inertia, the pocket ball and spring will move on their own and thus actuate the leaf spring to prevent moving the bell crank activator and bell crank toward the unlocking direction.
The leaf springs are configured to generate a proximal force that resists movement of the bell crank in the unlocking direction, and thus the bell crank activator is controlled by the leaf springs of the inertia cartridge assembly whenever the springs are actuated. Operation of the handle allows the bell crank activator to move in a door unlocking direction. The bell crank activator and bell crank are resisted by leaf springs of the inertia cartridge assembly whenever there is a side impact and when there is no operation of the handle.
According to the present invention, the inertia cartridge assembly inertially operates to generate a force that resists movement of the handle in the unlocking direction. This arrangement allows the door handle to resist inadvertent opening movement of the handle.
The present invention allows for resisting unlocking movement of the handle assembly in response to a side impact of the vehicle occurring in the vicinity of the handle assembly acting against the direction of the impact. The door handle assembly according to the present invention provides a simple and effective way for resisting inadvertent movement of the handle mechanism in the unlocking direction.

Detailed Description
The present invention relates to a safety device in a door handle assembly for a vehicle, wherein the safety device provides a safety measure against lateral mechanical impact that may occur due to a vehicle collision or during a side impact of the vehicle. Fig. 1 shows an assembly view of a door handle assembly of a vehicle door according to the present invention. The door handle assembly has a handle (11) and a hook assembly (12) on one end and a cover assembly (13) on the other end, assembled into a handle opening (30) provided in a door panel (10). The handle assembly is mounted on the door panel (10) by passing the handle assembly through an opening (30) in the outer skin of the door panel. The hook assembly (12) has a door panel locking mechanism (25), the door panel locking mechanism (25) being pivotally secured via a pivot pin (26) and fastened with the door panel via a screw (27) and a nut (28).
The lid assembly (13) has an outer lid (14), an inertia cartridge assembly (15) snapped into the lid, and a bell crank assembly (16) configured to connect with and control the latching of the door latch assembly. The bell crank assembly has a bell crank (17) and a bell crank activator (18), the bell crank activator (18) being received in the bell crank to actuate the bell crank to lock and unlock a latch in the door. The bell crank (17) is pivotally secured via a pivot pin (23) and pivotally secured with the outer cover by a spring load (24) such that operation of the handle (11) activates the bell crank activator to move the bell crank (17) in a door unlocking direction.
The bell crank (17) rotates about its axis when activated by a bell crank activator (18) and converts motion from the handle (11) into linear motion of the latch to control opening of the door. The bell crank assembly (16) has a bracket and is secured at one end with the outer cover (14) and the bell crank (17) is pivotally secured to the other end of the bracket. A counterweight (32) is disposed at the pivot end with the bell crank and generates a proximal force that resists movement of the handle in the latching direction. The main function of the bell crank (17) is to convert the rotational motion of the handle into linear motion of a bowden cable/link (not shown) connected to a door latch (not shown).
The bell crank assembly (16) includes an abutment (22), the abutment (22) being provided at one end of the bell crank for connection with a latch of a vehicle door. The abutment (22) is preferably snapped onto the bell crank (17). An abutment (22) blocks the position of the end of the cable which in turn helps to activate the latch. The bell crank (17) is then assembled on the bracket by means of a pivot pin (26). The bell crank is activated to translate rotational movement of the handle into linear movement of a bowden cable/link (not shown) connected to a latch (not shown). A bell crank (17) is assembled with the bracket via a spring load to hold the bell crank in a desired position.
A bell crank activator (18) is formed such that it activates the bell crank each time the handle (11) is operated. The movement of the handle is transmitted first to the bell crank activator and then to the bell crank (17) for locking and unlocking the door. A weight (32) is calculated and the weight (32) is assembled with the bell crank and assembled in the bell crank assembly (16) such that the bell crank (17) is activated to release the latch in the door for intentional opening of the door handle.
The inertia cartridge assembly (15) has a cartridge (19) and a cartridge ball (20) loaded by a leaf spring (21) contained within the cartridge. Operation of the handle (11) allows the bell crank activator to activate the bell crank and allow movement of the bell crank toward the unlocking direction. Operation of the handle (11) allows the bell crank activator (18) to activate the bell crank in an unlocking direction, and the spring (21) resists actuation of the bell crank activator (18) and controls the bell crank towards a door unlocking direction whenever there is a side impact and when there is no operation of the handle. The door handle assembly according to the present invention thus controls the latch of the vehicle door.
Fig. 2 is a view showing an installation view of a handle assembly in a vehicle door according to the present invention. The handle assembly is mounted on the door panel (10) by passing the handle assembly through an opening (30) in the outer skin of the door panel. The handle assembly is activated to control the opening of the door and perform the latching and unlatching operations of the door latch. A cushion layer (29) is provided together with an outer periphery of the cover assembly (13) to be assembled with the door panel (10) at a mating surface of the handle assembly.
The hook member (12) and the cover member (13) are inserted and assembled with the door panel. The hook assembly (12) is pivotally connected to the door to provide smooth operation of the handle during opening and closing of the door. The cover assembly (13) is first assembled and then inserted into the door opening, and thereafter the hook assembly (12) is inserted and secured with the equipment on the door (10). The hook assembly (12) is assembled with the door using fasteners such as screws (27) and nuts (28) to form a rigid assembly of the housing and the door.
Fig. 3A and 3B show views of a door handle assembly assembled in a vehicle door according to the present invention. The handle (11) is pivotally connected to the hook assembly (12) to effect opening and closing of the door. A cushion (29) is provided in an outer peripheral surface of the handle assembly to contact the vehicle door. The door panel (10) is provided with the necessary openings (30) to accurately receive the door handle assembly and allow manipulation of the door handle for opening and closing of the door. A latch assembly (not shown) is provided and assembled with the door panel (10) such that actuation of the door handle (11) via the bell crank assembly (16) actuates the latch for locking and unlocking the door.
An inertia cartridge assembly (15) and a bell crank assembly (16) are assembled with the cover assembly and then the cover assembly is inserted into an opening in the vehicle door. An abutment (22) arranged with the bell crank (17) is arranged in communication with the latch assembly for locking and unlocking the vehicle door. The door handle assembly is mounted on the door by passing the handle assembly through an opening (30) in the outer skin of the door, thus compromising the effectiveness of the inertia cartridge assembly (15) in resisting inadvertent unlocking of the door in the event of a side impact and the simplicity and cost effectiveness of mounting through an aperture in the outer skin of the door. The door handle assembly has a bell crank spring (24) to hold the handle in a closed condition so that the handle (11) will move in a direction against the spring load. Whenever the handle is released, the spring load on the handle returns the handle to its original closed state.
Fig. 4A and 4B show views of the initial position and the actuated position of the door handle assembly according to the present invention. A spring loaded ball (20) is movably assembled within the inertia cartridge assembly (15) and the cartridge assembly snaps with the outer cover (14) of the handle assembly. The bell crank assembly (16) helps to activate the door handle so that when the door handle is opened, the bell crank (17) moves with the counterweight (32) in the door unlocking direction. The pocket in the inertia pocket assembly does not resist movement of the bell crank activator when the handle is operated. A bell crank activator (18) activates the rotation of the spring loaded bell crank about its axis and this in turn helps to gyrate the abutment (22) along its axis. This combined action of the handle, the pocket (19), the bell crank (17), the bell crank activator (18) and the abutment (22) helps to translate the movement of the door handle into a linear movement of the cable/latch part, which activates the latch assembled in the vehicle door in the unlocking direction.
When there is a side impact of the vehicle, due to inertia, the pocket balls and springs move and thus actuate leaf springs (21) to contact a bell crank activator (18) of the bell crank assembly. When there is no operation of the handle (11) or no activation of the lid handle, the magazine (19) will not move and the movement of the balls (20) and leaf springs (21) will resist the movement of the bell crank activator (18) and generate a proximal force intended to resist inadvertent opening of the door during a side impact of the vehicle.
The leaf spring (21) is configured to act as a counterweight and generate a proximal force that resists movement of the bell crank (17) in the unlocking direction, and thus the bell crank activator (18) is controlled by the leaf spring (21) of the inertia cartridge assembly when actuated. This arrangement allows the door handle to resist inadvertent opening movement of the handle. The handle assembly according to the present invention is intended to provide improved safety measures for the door and smooth handle operation with respect to accepted guidelines.
Fig. 5A and 5B are views showing an initial position and an operating position of a leaf spring in a magazine assembly according to the present invention. The door handle assembly of the present invention is intended for controlling the latching travel of a vehicle door having a cover assembly (13), a bell crank assembly (16) is mounted on an outer cover (14) to move an inertia cartridge assembly (15) snapped onto the outer cover (14) in an unlocking direction and an opposite locking direction. In accordance with the apparatus and method of the present invention, the cartridge inertia mechanism operates to produce a positive locking movement of the handle mechanism in the locking direction. This arrangement allows the leaf spring (21) to resist opening movement of the handle during inadvertent opening of the door and to allow movement of the bell crank during intentional opening of the door.
Fig. 6A, 6B, 6C and 6D show various views of the initial and operational positions of the cartridge inertial locking mechanism according to the present invention. The magazine (19) is loaded with balls (20) and leaf springs (21) and arranged within the cover assembly. The leaf spring is configured such that it is actuated each time the ball moves and therefore resists actuation of the bell crank actuator.
The pocket assembly can block or resist actuation of the bell crank actuator either permanently or depending on the load condition. In the event of a blockage depending on the load condition, the pocket ball will move depending on the applied load and tend to actuate the leaf spring and thus limit the movement of the handle. But once the load is released the pocket ball and leaf spring will go into their initial position and cause the handle to slide out.
In the case of permanent blocking, the pocket ball will move according to the minimum load applied and will move to the permanent blocking position and will tend to actuate the leaf spring and thus limit the movement of the handle. But in this case the ball will not enter its initial position due to the permanent stop feature. Thus, the door can be opened after impact with a high force (about 60 kg) by damaging/yielding the leaf spring, thereby freeing the passenger from the vehicle.
The door handle assembly allows for the utilization of an inertia cartridge assembly in conjunction with the handle assembly and thus compromises the effectiveness of the cartridge inertia arrangement in preventing inadvertent unlocking of the door in the event of a side impact. The present invention also achieves the simplicity and cost efficiency of installation of the door handle assembly through an aperture in the outer skin of the door.
The invention enables optimization of weight and a compact design with modular inertial mechanism. An inertia cartridge assembly (15) and a bell crank assembly (16) are coupled for movement with the handle mechanism in a latching direction. This arrangement allows for resisting unlocking movement of the handle mechanism in response to an impact in the vicinity of the handle assembly against the side of the vehicle acting in the direction of the impact.
The door handle assembly according to the present invention provides a simple and effective way of allowing the counterweight to resist inadvertent movement of the handle mechanism in the unlocking direction. This improved door handle assembly allows the door handle assembly to be inserted through an aperture in the outer skin of the door, thus simplifying the process of installing the door handle assembly.
The door handle assembly allows the door handle assembly to be inserted through an aperture in the outer skin of the door, thus simplifying the process of installing the door handle assembly. The frameless door handle assembly with an inertial locking mechanism according to the present invention can be mounted on a door by passing the handle assembly through an aperture in the outer panel of the door, thus making a simple, effective and cost effective arrangement.
While the invention has been described in connection with what is presently considered to be the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the disclosed embodiment, but on the contrary, is intended to cover various modifications and equivalent arrangements included within the spirit and scope of the appended claims, which scope is to be accorded the broadest interpretation so as to encompass all such modifications and equivalent structures as is permitted under the law.
