Description

Multipurpose brewing machine
Technical Field
The invention relates to a multipurpose brewing machine.
Background
Automatic or semi-automatic brewing and dispensing machines for hot beverages (e.g., tea, coffee, soup, hot chocolate beverages, etc.) are known in the art. In these machines, the beverage material used is in bulk (alose) form or contained in a container. Some machines use flexible containers (e.g., filter bags) containing roast and ground coffee or leaf tea. Some machines use single-part cartridges (cartridge) that may be rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible. The main component in these machines is the brewing component, wherein the single-serving cartridge is pierced by suitable means provided in said component. Hot pressurized water is formed for flowing into the single-serving cartridge, which mixes with and infuses the brewing material contained in the single-serving cartridge. The brewer has an outlet for outflow of liquid brewed thereby into the dispensing cup.
In order to improve the ability of a brewing machine to brew a single-serving cartridge, it is known to use a cartridge tube in which a plurality of single-serving cartridges are stacked. In such a configuration, a suitable delivery mechanism is provided for delivering one single serving cartridge at a time from the cartridge tube to the brewer assembly. Such multiple cartridge tubes are known, each having multiple single-serving cartridges with the same brewing material or each stacking single-serving cartridges of different brewing materials. These are provided on a rotatable cavity plate so that a single serving cartridge with the desired brewing material can be positioned or selected and transported by the transport means so that the brewing material can be brewed in the brewer assembly.
U.S. Pat. No.6,997,103 discloses a brewing device using a flexible brewing material reservoir. The brewing material is contained in a pouch (sachet) which is sealed on one side by a flexible plastic film and on the other side by filter paper and has an extension on one side as the liquid outlet for brewing. There are two gripping members that can be moved closer to each other to close the pouch. One of the clamping members has an elastomeric membrane supported on a hydraulic tank, while the other clamping member has a rigid wall provided with an outwardly protruding metal filler pipe. The two rigid spacer elements are provided with means to define a recess (recess) around the injection tube. When the clamp is closed, hydraulic pressure causes the flexible sheet to expand outwardly against the infusion tube creating perforations in the membrane. Water flows into the pouch through the injection tube and brewed liquid flows out through the extension of the pouch.
A disadvantage of the above described device is that the flap formed by a portion of the pliable membrane of the pouch forms a valve over the end of the injection tube, which flap is supposed to have sufficient flexibility to be displaced to allow liquid into the pouch when liquid is injected through the injection tube outlet orifice, and that the counter pressure of the pouch presses the flap against the injection tube outlet orifice when the supply of liquid to the injection tube is stopped, thereby preventing any contents of the pouch from entering and clogging the injection tube. However, the counter pressure may not always be sufficient for completely and tightly pressing the petals against the outlet hole of the injection tube, resulting in a situation where the contents of the pouch clog the injection tube after the brewing water enters the pouch.
Another disadvantage of the above brewing arrangement is that it is only applicable to flexible containers, such as sachets, wherein the plastic film covering the sachet can expand out of one side and be perforated by the injection tube upon application of hydraulic pressure.
Still another disadvantage of the above brewing arrangement is that it cannot be used with small pouches or cartridges formed of rigid or semi-rigid materials.
A further disadvantage of the above brewing arrangement is that it is not suitable for such automatic operation, i.e. brewing a plurality of sachets. The arrangement does not include any conveying mechanism for automatically conveying/positioning the pouches from the pouch tube or other such storage device for a plurality of pouches to the brewing position. Therefore, the above-described mechanism is unsuitable for meeting a large number of demands in a short time in offices, formal gatherings, and the like.
Yet another disadvantage of the above described brewing arrangement is that the infusion tube may penetrate completely into the sachet and, thus, due to the imprecise positioning of the sachet in the brewing mechanism, the flexible membrane may not form the desired flap covering the injector outlet orifice as assumed in the arrangement, thereby causing the contents of the sachet to clog the infusion tube during outflow of the brewed liquid.
U.S. Pat. No.4,846,052 discloses an apparatus for brewing a brewing material contained in a rigid single cartridge. The apparatus includes an extraction apparatus and a single cartridge holder. The extraction device has an injection element with a plurality of holes for injecting hot water into the cartridge. The cartridge is placed in said cartridge holder underneath the extraction device such that the injection element pierces the cartridge. The hot water flows through the plurality of holes of the injection element into the brewing material contained in the cartridge. The brewed liquid flows out through the filter paper sealing the cartridge and through the outlet of the cartridge holder.
A disadvantage of the above described device is that the penetration and the injection of water are performed on one side of the cartridge and the brewed liquid flows out of the other side of the cartridge. Due to the channels formed within the brewing material, the brewing material contained in the cartridge may not be uniformly wetted and thus may not be thoroughly brewed.
Another disadvantage of the above machine is that a complex perforator structure with multiple holes is required. In order not to damage the upper dome of the cartridge, it is also necessary that the injection point of the injection element has an exact angle in the range of 20 to 40 degrees.
Yet another disadvantage of the above machine is that very high pressures of 8 to 15 Pa are required, which may lead to breakage (bursting) of the cartridge due to any local imperfections or weaknesses in the wall of the cartridge during manufacture. Furthermore, the cartridge needs to have a specific design with thicker material walls to withstand such high pressures, which increases cost and complexity.
A further drawback of the above machine is that it has a complex mechanism to release the used cartridge. A further drawback of the above machine is that the cartridge requires a specific annular rim which is firmly held within the device during extraction by cooperating means. Any misplacement of the cartridge within the device during brewing will result in deformation or rupture of the cartridge. This also makes it necessary for the design of the cartridge support means on the device to be complex.
Yet another disadvantage of the above machine is that for rupturing the cover of the cartridge along the line of weakness of the cartridge to allow the brewed liquid to flow out, it is dependent on the internal pressure of the brewed liquid during brewing. The internal pressure may decrease due to the brewing material and the pressure within the filter paper or cartridge, which may not always be sufficient for the cover of the cartridge to rupture along the line of weakness to allow the brewed liquid to flow out.
Yet another drawback of the above-described device is that it is not suitable for automatic operation, since it does not have a plurality of cartridges stacked in a plurality of cartridge tubes and does not have automatic means for positioning or transporting the cartridges within the brewing device. Therefore, the apparatus is unsuitable for satisfying a large number of demands in a short time as in offices, formal gatherings, and the like.
U.S. patent No.5,325,765 discloses a beverage filter cartridge in which the cartridge has three elements. The first element is an inverted frusto-conical shaped base and is closed at the bottom and open at the top. The second element is a filter body in the form of an inverted cone containing brewing material, wherein the cone tapers on the sides and has a height less than the base so that when the filter body is seated in the base the edges of the filter body and base sealingly engage, forming a chamber between the surface of the filter body and the base for receiving brewed liquid flowing from the cone of the filter body. The third element is a dome-shaped cap of pierceable material. As mentioned above, the cartridge third element is arranged in a housing, the upper part of which has a penetrating needle (penetrator needle) for piercing the cap and allowing hot pressurized water to flow into the filter cone through a hole in the penetrating needle, and the lower part of which has a second penetrating needle for letting out the brewed liquid.
A disadvantage of the above described device is that a plurality of perforation means are required, one perforation means for piercing the filter cone cover to allow brewing water to flow into the brewing material contained in the filter cone, and the other perforation means for piercing the bottom of the housing to allow the brewed liquid to flow out into the dispensing cup.
Another disadvantage of the above described device is that it requires a specific cartridge of complex design, which will require production with a specific machine.
Yet another disadvantage of the device is that the perforation means must pierce the base of a beverage filter cartridge made of a beverage such as polystyrene, polyethylene, etc., which over time may blunt the end of the perforation means, reducing the efficacy of the mechanism. U.S. patent No.6,606,938 discloses a single serving brewer having a housing containing a liquid reservoir. A shaft extending vertically upwards from the liquid reservoir has a conical baffle at its lower end and a central arm at its upper end, said central arm extending to a brewing chamber designed to receive a single serving beverage filter cartridge. An air pump on the platform is connected to the bladder and also to the port on the conical baffle via a first flexible hose. The tube extending through the baffle to the canister is connected via a second flexible hose to a first tubular probe carried by the arm. The helical spring and the second tubular probe are arranged below the brewing chamber.
When the bladder expands, it pushes down on the hub arm and shaft, causing the spring under the cartridge to be compressed, causing the bottom of the cartridge to be depressed and pierced by the second tubular probe. When the pressure is released, the cap of the container is pierced by the first tubular probe. The compressed air is then fed into the liquid tank via a flexible hose, with hot water being discharged from the liquid tank in metered amounts and fed into the cartridge via a second flexible hose. The beverage thus prepared passes through the filter body and enters the dispensing cup through the second tubular probe. A disadvantage of the above-described device is that the brewing water is fed into the single-serving cartridge by a complex and cumbersome mechanism comprising an air pump, a bladder, two flexible hoses, a shaft, a central arm, etc.
Another disadvantage is that two tubular probes are required as perforating means, one for piercing the container lid and the other for the bottom of the cartridge.
Yet another disadvantage is that a complex mechanism is required to sequentially pierce the bottom of the cartridge first and then the lid of the cartridge. This sequential piercing operation of the two ends of the cartridge results in a slower time period and the consumer must wait for the cup of beverage for a longer time.
Yet another disadvantage is that since the cartridge needs to be manually loaded into the brewing chamber for each cup of beverage desired to be made, it is not suitable for a large supply, thus making it unsuitable in situations requiring high-speed dispensing, such as offices, formal gatherings, etc.
A further drawback of the above-described device is that the second tubular device is intended to pierce the bottom of the cartridge and act as an outlet for the brewed liquid. During outflow of the brewed liquid, the tubular device may become clogged with brewing material.
U.S. patent No.6079315 discloses a beverage filter cartridge holder mounted on a slidable drawer. The system includes an axially movable cover operated by a linkage connector (linkage yoke) driven by a motor. When the cap is moved axially downward, a downwardly projecting apertured probe is caused to pierce the top of the cartridge to provide a hot water inlet for the brewing operation. The other hollow piercing member is also caused to pierce the bottom surface of the cartridge to provide an outlet flow path for the brewed liquid.
The disadvantage of the above system is that the brewing machine requires a very complex internal mechanism to receive the cartridge, position the cartridge in an excellent alignment, and create the effect of puncturing the top and bottom of the cartridge, and expelling the used cartridge during the brewing process.
Another disadvantage of the above system is that in the beverage filter cartridge holder the cartridge must be manually loaded by opening the slidable drawer, making the system time consuming for brewing a cup of beverage.
Yet another disadvantage of the above system is that the above apparatus is not suitable for large volume supplies because of the lack of a mechanism for automatically feeding single serving cartridges from a cartridge storage device for multiple cartridges into the cartridge holder.
Yet another disadvantage of the above system is that the lid of the brewing chamber is operated using complex gear driven racks, motors, vertical rails, etc. Furthermore, the mounting pivot of the brew chamber on the slidable drawer is a very complex design and may become misaligned due to repeated and frequent use, which in turn results in misalignment of the beverage filter cartridge.
A further drawback of the above system is that a plurality of perforation means are required, one for piercing the top of the cartridge to allow the inflow of hot water for brewing, and another for piercing the bottom surface of the cartridge to allow the outflow of brewed liquid. This increases the complexity of the brewer design and the cost of manufacture.
U.S. patent No.7,328,651 discloses four embodiments of cartridges and beverage preparation machines. The cartridge includes an outer member, an inner member, and a laminate structure. The interior of the cartridge is filled with one or more beverage ingredients. In a first type of cartridge, the outer member is a bowl-shaped housing having a curved annular wall, a closed top and an open bottom that together define the tray. At the top centre there is provided an inwardly directed cylindrical extension with a stepped profile. A manifold (manifold) around the periphery of the annular wall is formed between the annular wall and the coaxial minor wall. About 20 to 40 slits are provided in the annular wall. A cylindrical inlet chamber having a closed upper surface is provided at the periphery of the outer member. This inlet chamber communicates with the manifold via 1 to 4 slits. The inner member includes an annular frame and a downwardly extending cylindrical funnel. The filter paper is placed on an annular frame. The annular frame has an outer rim and an inner hub (hub) connected by equally spaced radial spokes. The cylindrical funnel has an outer tube surrounding an inner discharge spout through which the prepared beverage is discharged into the cup. The four different embodiments of the cartridge disclosed in this patent differ in minor structural changes on the elements (e.g. discharge nozzles, radial spokes, slits in the annular wall, provision of air inlets, etc.).
The beverage preparation machine disclosed in the above-mentioned patent is suitable for use with cartridges of the type described above. The beverage preparation machine includes a housing, a water tank, a water heater, a water pump, an air compressor, a control processor, a user interface, and a cartridge head. The cartridge head includes a cartridge holder, a cartridge identification device, and inlet and outlet piercers. The water heater heats the water to 20 to 85 degrees celsius. The inlet perforator is a hollow needle (e.g., a tube) that pierces the laminate structure and allows water to flow in through the water conduit. The outlet piercer is an open ended cylinder of a size larger than the discharge spout.
A disadvantage of the cartridges used in the above-described machines is that these cartridges are quite complex and relatively expensive to manufacture.
Another disadvantage of the above machine is that a four-stage discharge cycle is required. In the pre-wetting phase, the cartridge is filled with water from the water storage tank by a water pump device. In the next stage "pause", the beverage ingredients are allowed to soak in the water injected during the pre-wetting stage. In the next stage of brewing/mixing, water enters the cartridge to produce the beverage. In the final stage of air cleaning, pressurized air is blown through the beverage preparation machine and the beverage cartridge to ensure that all the beverage is dispensed and the flow path is purged to prepare the flow path for dispensing another beverage. In view of the above, the delivery time of the beverage through the machine is relatively long, typically between 10 and 120 seconds. As a result, the consumer must wait for a long period of time before being able to consume his beverage.
Yet another disadvantage of the machine is that the consumer must manually place the cartridge in the cartridge holder before operating the machine and then must manually remove and dispose of the used cartridge. This slows down the time period and also makes the machine less user friendly. In certain situations, there must be an additional operator to run the machine, requiring additional human effort.
Yet another disadvantage of the machine is that the operator must precisely position the cartridge on the cartridge seat so that the handle of the cartridge is located in an irregular area on the cartridge seat. It is likely that the cartridge may be misdirected by untrained operator operation or due to human error, resulting in a process flaw or blockage or damage to the machine when the cartridge holder is closed by operation of the clamping lever.
A further drawback of said machine is that there is no means of stacking a plurality of cartridges and automatically feeding the cartridges for brewing. For this reason, the machine is not suitable for meeting such a demand in offices, formal gatherings, and the like, that is, a demand for mass supply in a short time is necessary.
U.S. patent No.6,536,332 discloses an automatic coffee machine brewing assembly for brewing coffee powder pre-packaged in a cartridge. The brewing chamber is constituted by two brewing chamber portions-an upper portion and a lower portion. The bottom of the brewing chamber is provided with a plurality of perforating members in the form of inclined blades, which are adapted to pierce the back surface of the cartridge. The upper brewing chamber portion is provided with an extension member having a shape corresponding to the outer shape of the cartridge. The upper brewing chamber portion is provided with an extension member having a central opening with such dimensions that the perforated member will not injure the person handling. When the closure piston abuts against the upper part, the perforating member penetrates the bottom of the cartridge, creating a longitudinal slit therein. Through which the brewing water flows and through the slits thus created, into the interior of the cartridge, thereby brewing the coffee powder contained in the cartridge.
A disadvantage of the above arrangement is that the bottom of the cartridge is required to be provided with a slit of a certain size in order to accommodate the knife-shaped inclined perforating member. This requires precise positioning of the cartridge to align the slit of the cartridge with the position of the obliquely disposed knife perforation member.
Another drawback of the above-described device is that it is also unsuitable for operation with cartridges stacked in a plurality of cartridge tubes, since there is no transport mechanism for transporting cartridges from the cartridge tubes to the brewing unit. Therefore, the above-described apparatus is also unsuitable for meeting a large number of demands in a short time in an occasion such as an office, a formal meeting, or the like.
U.S. patent No.7,013,797 discloses a capsule lumen device comprising six cylindrical capsule lumen tubes mounted on a circular base in a circular array. Each capsule lumen has an opening for capsule removal through which the lowermost capsule of the capsules stacked in the tube can be pushed out. The patent mentions that the device may be used as a mechanism in espresso machines known in the art to automatically remove a capsule from a capsule cartridge tube, which mechanism rotates into a removable position and conveys this capsule to a brewing position. In order to avoid the lowermost capsule from unintentionally sliding out of the capsule removal opening, a blocking ring is provided around the capsule pocket means, which ring blocking ring can be lifted by lifting elements provided in the support means, if necessary, to allow the cartridge to be positioned in the brewing machine.
The above-mentioned patent allows for the delivery of the cartridge from the cartridge tube to the brewing site and for the brewing of the brewing material contained in the cartridge by means known in the art. Thus, the above-described invention involves only a plurality of lumen tubes and uses only known delivery means.
U.S. patent No.6,820,535 describes a capsule transport mechanism comprising a capsule transport drive motor with a drive mechanism provided with a drive disc provided with drive bolts. The lowest capsule in the capsule tube is pushed out by the capsule holder, and then the actuating lever, which is mounted in a swivelling manner on the swivel body support, conveys the individual capsules into the brewing unit. In the brewing unit, the spindle mechanism causes the capsule perforator to pierce the upper surface of the single serving capsule and, subsequently, pressurized hot brewing water flows into the capsule. When the pressure in the cartridge builds to a certain level, the membrane forming the bottom of the cartridge is pressed against the plate of the pyramid shape, whereby the membrane is perforated. The brewed liquid flows out through the holes created by the piercing operation and through the drain holes in the plate and then through the outlet of the brewing unit. A disadvantage of the above described device is that a plurality of perforating means are required for perforating one side of the capsule for letting in high temperature and high pressure water, while a plate with a plurality of pyramid shaped ends is used for perforating the membrane on the other side of the capsule for allowing outflow of the brewed liquid.
Another disadvantage of the above-described device is that it is a complex mechanism for transporting the capsule from the capsule tube to the brewing unit, which mechanism comprises an actuating lever, a drive motor, a drive disc, a drive bolt, a capsule holder, and said actuating lever is mounted in a swivel manner on a swivel body support. Similarly, the brewing unit also comprises a complex mechanism comprising a spindle piston drive consisting of a drive motor, a drive mechanism, a drive pin engaging with an outer gear system of the spindle piston, a drive gear equipped with an inner gear system, etc. The complexity and relatively large number of moving parts of the machine may result in higher operating and maintenance costs in addition to making the machine more expensive to manufacture.
Yet another disadvantage of the above infusion assembly is that the outflow of infused liquid occurs through the holes in the sealing membrane of the single serving capsule created by the plurality of pyramidal shaped plates. Very small particles of brewing material may flow out through these holes together with the brewed liquid, thereby reducing the quality of the dispensed beverage or blocking the outlet pipe that conveys the brewed liquid out of the brewing unit.
A further disadvantage of the above-described assembly is that the inflow of hot water into the capsule takes place from one side of the capsule and the outflow of brewed liquid takes place from the other side of the capsule, as some particles of brewing material may not be wetted, with the result that the brewing of the brewing material contained in the cartridge may not be complete. Furthermore, the arrangement of water inflow from one side and outflow from the other side results in a very complex design of the assembly and a bulky brewing unit.
PCT patent PCT/US2005/031604 describes a cartridge transport mechanism in which a cartridge carousel has a plurality of compartments containing cartridge cartridges which are rotated by a spindle motor whereby appropriate cartridge cartridges are dropped into a turret aperture of a turret assembly with the assistance of a disengaging ratchet along with solenoid operation. The turret motor rotates the turret plate toward the injection assembly and the drive motor lowers the injection nozzle of the injection assembly, thereby causing the injection nozzle of the injection nozzle to penetrate the sealed top of the cartridge. The hot pressurized water from the heat exchanger flows through the injection nozzle and then through a plurality of holes provided in the insert surrounding the cartridge top end. The pressure built up by the incoming water within the cartridge barrel opens the scored area of the sealed bottom of the cartridge to allow brewed liquid to flow out through the collection funnel into the dispensing cup.
A disadvantage of the above mechanism is that the delivery and brewing mechanism is relatively complex in structure when compared to the present invention. First, the spindle motor rotates the carousel, and then, the cartridge is positioned off the ratchet into a port on the turret plate where it is pierced by an injection nozzle of the injection assembly.
Another disadvantage of the above-described device is that it presents a structurally complex injection assembly for piercing the metal foil on the top side of the capsule, said injection assembly being constituted by an injection nozzle movable in a vertical plane by a cam system driven by a motor. The cam cooperates with the roller to urge the support plate downwardly, thereby bringing the injection nozzle into contact with the cartridge barrel. Because the correct positioning of the cartridge carousel and the turret wheel during their rotation is critical, this design also makes pawls and limit switches necessary in both the cartridge carousel and the turret wheel.
Yet another disadvantage of the above-described device is that the cartridge used in the device is relatively complex and thus more complex and relatively expensive to manufacture than the cartridge of simple design used in the present invention. In the above device, the cartridge has a thermoplastic insert with a plurality of holes provided in the top of the cartridge, the insert being further covered with a metal foil. The bottom of the cartridge is made of filter paper or metal foil with scored areas that separate when hot pressurized water is injected into the cartridge. The hot pressurized water enters the cartridge barrel through the holes in the insert and exits through the scored area. The complexity of the cartridge and the higher cost of the cartridge results in an increase in the final cost per cup of beverage to the consumer.
A further disadvantage in the above-described device is that water flows into the cartridge from the top of the cartridge and out through the bottom of the cartridge, so that it is necessary to provide filter paper with holes on one side and means for allowing water to flow out from the other side.
Another disadvantage of the above mechanism is the design of the support plate and injection head lowered using eccentric cams. Such cam activated mechanisms are typically slow in operation and increase the cycle time per cup.
Yet another disadvantage of the system is that there is a complex mechanism for lifting the cartridge from the turret opening before pushing the cartridge into the waste bin by the sweeper arm.
It can be seen from the above description that, in fact, for a brewing machine, the more complex the structure, the more advantageous it is, but the more drawbacks will come from, so the design that is simple in structure, multifunctional and practical is the better one.
