技术领域
本申请要求于2015年9月21日在韩国提交的韩国专利申请第10-2015-0133020号的优先权,并通过引用的方式将其全部公开内容并入本文中。
本公开涉及具有改善的安全性的电极和包含该电极的二次电池。更具体地,本公开涉及具有增加的耐钉子的穿透性且由此确保二次电池耐受内部短路的安全性的正极。
背景技术
电池的能量与能量密度成比例地增加。此外,随着二次电池转化成具有更高能量的二次电池,电池的安全性受到威胁。在正常状态下,储存在正极中的电能和负极中的电能由隔膜分隔并安全地保持。然而,各种因素可以导致正极与负极之间的短路并在短时间内释放大量储存的电能,从而导致放热/起火或热失控现象。具体地,在锂二次电池的情况下,当由于钉子穿透导致的内部短路而在短时间内在电池中有大的电流流动时,电池被放出的热加热并存在起火/爆炸的危险。
因此,作为用于确保耐受钉子穿透的安全性的尝试的一部分,主要研究和使用了使用安装在电池外部的器件的方法和在电池内部使用材料的方法。利用温度变化的正温度系数(PTC)器件、利用电压变化的保护电路和利用电池内部压力变化的安全阀对应于前者,而添加能够根据电池中温度或电压变化而物理地、化学地或电化学地进行变化的材料对应于后者。
由于安装在电池外部的器件利用温度、电压和内部压力,因此它们能够产生可信的中断(破坏)但是需要额外的安装工序和安装空间。此外,已知当需要快速响应时间时,例如在内部短路、钉子穿透、局部损坏等的情况下,这样的器件不能够充分地表现保护功能。
作为在电池中使用材料的方法,已经进行了关于向电解质或电极添加化学安全机构包括能够改善安全性的添加剂的研究。这样的方法的有利之处在于其不需要空间并且能够应用于任何类型的电池。然而,据报道,当温度升高时,产生在电极上形成钝化膜的材料或发生体积膨胀,从而增加了电极的电阻。在各个情况下,存在的问题是,在形成钝化膜时产生副产物并且电池性能下降,或者电池中由所述材料占据的体积大而导致电池容量下降。
因此,仍然需要开发用于防止由钉子穿透而造成的放热或起火的技术。
发明内容
技术问题
本公开旨在解决相关领域的问题,因此本公开的目的在于提供通过控制正极的机械性质并且由此控制对由钉子穿透而引起的内部短路的耐受性而能够解决由短路引起的放热/起火的问题的电极,以及包含所述电极的二次电极。
技术方案
在本公开的一方面,提供二次电池用正极,其包含正极集电器和设置在所述正极集电器的至少一个表面上的正极活性材料层并且具有0.6%~1.5%的伸长率。
所述正极集电器可以具有6μm~20μm的厚度。
所述正极集电器可以为铝箔。
所述正极活性材料可以具有4μm~12μm的平均粒径。
所述正极活性材料层在辊压之后可以具有23%~35%的孔隙率。
在本公开的另一方面,还提供包含上述正极、负极和置于所述正极与所述负极之间的隔膜的二次电极。
有益效果
根据本公开的实施方式,将正极的伸长率控制在优化的范围内,从而防止或显著减少由钉子穿透而引起的经由钉子的间接短路和不经由钉子的直接短路而导致的正极集电器与负极集电器之间的内部短路以及正极集电器与负极活性材料层之间的内部短路。
因此,可以防止由内部短路而引起的二次电池的放热和起火,从而改善二次电池的安全性。
具体实施方式
下文中,将对本公开进行详细说明。
一方面,提供二次电池用正极,其包含正极集电器和设置在所述正极集电器的至少一个表面上的正极活性材料层并且具有0.6%~1.5%的伸长率。
如本文所使用的,“伸长率”根据以下数学式1定义:

所述伸长率具有涵盖纵向方向上的伸长率和横向方向上的伸长率两者的概念。纵向方向上的伸长率可以不同于横向方向上的伸长率。在这种情况下,所述伸长率定义为纵向方向上的伸长率和横向方向上的伸长率的算术平均数。例如,当正极具有50%的在纵向方向上的伸长率和100%的在横向方向上的伸长率时,所述正极具有75%的伸长率。
使用在ISO527中定义的方法确定所述伸长率。
为了确保耐受钉子穿透的安全性,优选正极的伸长率和负极的伸长率小且隔膜的伸长率大。然而,因为通常用作负极集电器的铜(Cu)箔具有显著较大的伸长率,因此即使当处理Cu箔时也难以使Cu箔具有期望水平的伸长率。在隔膜的情况下,当其与电极集电器相比具有更低的伸长率时,在钉子穿透期间存在正极与负极之间接触的可能性增加的问题。
根据本公开的一种实施方式,当正极具有0.6%~1.5%的伸长率时,在钉子穿透期间由于正极的耐受钉子的穿透性而引起的发生内部短路的可能性降低。即使当负极集电器具有高伸长率如约15%的伸长率时,和/或当隔膜具有低伸长率如约6%的伸长率时,也能够获得由具有以上限定的伸长率范围的正极所提供的防止/减少产生内部短路的可能性的效果。当所述正极具有低于0.6%的伸长率时,其在辊压工序中可能断裂。当所述正极具有高于1.5%的伸长率时,其在钉子穿透期间还可能沿穿透方向伸长,并且可能与负极集电器或负极活性材料接触,从而导致内部短路。否则,所述正极可能与钉子直接接触并且可能通过钉子与负极集电器或负极活性材料接触,从而导致内部短路。
由于在涂布、干燥和压制用于在正极集电器的至少一个表面上形成正极活性材料层的浆料之后完成正极,因此所述正极的伸长率由正极集电器与正极活性材料层的组合决定。
正极集电器的伸长率可以根据正极集电器的材料、厚度和强度而变化,并且也根据用于制造和处理正极集电器的方法而变化。
用于正极集电器的材料没有特别限制,只要其具有高导电性并且不在相应电池中引起任何化学变化即可。例如,可以使用不锈钢、铝、镍、钛、焙烧碳,或者用碳、镍、钛或银表面处理过的铝或不锈钢。优选使用铝。此外,可以在集电器上形成微细的凹凸以增加正极活性材料的粘附。此外,可以以各种形式如膜、片、箔、网状物、多孔体、泡沫体或无纺布来使用所述集电器。
正极集电器可以具有6μm~20μm的厚度。当正极集电器具有小于所述下限的厚度时,包含所述正极集电器的电池可以具有降低的电阻并且所述正极集电器在辊压工序中可能断裂,同时提供低于期望伸长率下限的伸长率。当正极集电器具有高于所述上限的厚度时,不能确保期望的伸长率并且电极体积不期望地增加。
正极活性材料层可以设置在正极集电器的一个表面或两个表面上,并且可以包含正极活性材料、导电材料和粘结剂。
随着形成正极活性材料层的活性材料粒子的粒径减小,正极活性材料层倾向于具有较低的伸长率。这是因为发生应力集中现象使得具有较小粒径的粒子可以在辊压工序期间在集电器上留下缺陷,并且力(应力)在伸长期间集中在所述缺陷上,从而导致正极损坏(断裂)和伸长率的下降。活性材料粒子可以具有4μm~12μm的平均粒径并且可以作为混合物使用。当活性材料粒子作为混合物使用时,所述混合物的平均粒径以算术平均数定义。当活性材料粒子具有大于所述上限的平均粒径时,所述活性材料层的伸长率偏离上述上限。当活性材料粒子具有小于所述下限的平均粒径时,在浆料的制备期间难以进行均匀的分散。在这种情况下,也难以进行辊压并且因此难以在辊压工序期间获得期望的辊压厚度。
此外,关于正极活性材料层的孔隙率,正极活性材料层的伸长率倾向于随着其孔隙率降低而降低。根据本公开的一种实施方式,优选正极活性材料层具有23%~35%或23%~31%的孔隙率。当孔隙率小于所述下限时,不能确保电解质和/或锂离子的平滑转移,导致电池的性能降低。当孔隙率大于所述上限时,难以确保期望的伸长率,导致电极的体积不期望地增加。
如本文所使用的,“孔隙率”是指基于活性材料层的总体积,存在于所述活性材料层中的孔隙部分(空的空间)的体积的比例,并且通过目前使用的汞量法进行测量。
可以使用的正极活性材料的具体实例包括但不限于:层状化合物,例如锂钴氧化物(LiCoO2)或锂镍氧化物(LiNiO2),或用一种或多种过渡金属置换的化合物;由化学式Li1+ xMn2-xO4(其中x为0~0.33)、LiMnO3、LiMn2O3或LiMnO2表示的锂锰氧化物;由化学式LixNiaMnbCocO2(其中0<a≤0.9,0<b≤0.9,0<c≤0.5,0.85≤a+b+c≤1.05,0.95≤x≤1.15)表示的三元锂复合氧化物;锂铜氧化物(Li2CuO2);钒氧化物如LiV3O8,LiFe3O4,V2O5或Cu2V2O7;由化学式LiNi1-xMxO2(其中M为Co、Mn、Al、Cu、Fe、Mg、B或Ga,且x为0.01~0.3)表示的Ni位点型锂镍氧化物;由化学式LiMn2-xMxO2(其中M为Co、Ni、Fe、Cr、Zn或Ta,且x为0.01~0.1)或Li2Mn3MO8(其中M为Fe、Co、Ni、Cu或Zn)表示的锂锰复合氧化物;其中Li被碱土金属离子部分置换的LiMn2O4;二硫化物化合物;Fe2(MoO4)3等。
粘结剂是有助于活性材料与导电材料之间的粘合以及对集电器的粘合的成分,并且通常可以基于正极活性材料层的总重量以1重量%~50重量%的量添加。粘结剂的具体实例可以包括高分子量聚丙烯腈-共-丙烯酸,但不限于此。其他实例包括聚偏二氟乙烯、聚乙烯醇、羧甲基纤维素(CMC)、淀粉、羟丙基纤维素、再生纤维素、聚乙烯基吡咯烷酮、聚四氟乙烯、聚乙烯、聚丙烯、乙烯-丙烯-二烯三元共聚物(EPDM)、磺化的EPDM、丁苯橡胶(SBR)、氟橡胶、各种共聚物等。
导电材料是具有导电性且在电池中不引起任何化学变化的材料,并且可以基于所述正极活性材料层的总重量以1重量%~50重量%的量添加。导电材料的具体实例包括石墨例如天然石墨或人造石墨;炭黑类如炭黑、乙炔黑、科琴黑(ketjen black)、槽法炭黑、炉黑、灯黑或热裂解法炭黑;碳纳米管(CNT);导电纤维如碳纤维或金属纤维;氟化碳、铝粉或镍粉等的金属粉末;导电晶须如氧化锌或钛酸钾;导电金属氧化物如二氧化钛;导电聚合物如聚亚苯基衍生物;等等。
另一方面,提供包含与负极组合的正极和置于所述正极与所述负极之间的隔膜的二次电池。
可以通过将含有负极活性材料、粘结剂和导电材料的混合物涂布在负极集电器上然后干燥溶剂而获得所述负极。
负极活性材料的具体实例包括:碳和石墨材料例如天然石墨、人造石墨、膨胀石墨、碳纤维、难石墨化碳、炭黑、碳纳米管、富勒烯和活性炭等;能够与锂合金化的金属如Al、Si、Sn、Ag、Bi、Mg、Zn、In、Ge、Pb、Pd、Pt和Ti等,和含有上述元素的化合物;金属和金属化合物以及碳和石墨材料的复合化合物;含锂的氮化物;等等。
可以还含有导电材料作为改善负极活性材料的导电性的成分。所述导电材料与如上所述的相同。
负极集电器通常具有约3μm~约30μm的厚度。所述负极集电器没有特别限制,只要其具有导电性且在相应电池中不引起任何化学变化即可。所述负极集电器的具体实例包括铜、不锈钢、铝、镍、钛、焙烧碳,用碳、镍、钛、银等表面处理过的铜或不锈钢,铝-镉合金,等等。此外,与正极集电器类似,可以在表面上形成微细的凹凸以增强与负极活性材料的粘合力。可以以包括膜、片、箔、网状物、多孔体、泡沫体或无纺布的各种形状使用负极集电器。
隔膜置于正极与负极之间,并且使用具有高离子渗透性和机械强度的绝缘薄膜作为隔膜。隔膜可以具有通常为0.01μm~10μm的孔径和5μm~50μm的厚度。隔膜的具体实例包括烯烃聚合物如耐化学性和疏水性的聚丙烯;由玻璃纤维或聚乙烯制成的片或无纺布;等等。当使用固体电解质如聚合物作为电解质时,所述固体电解质也可以起隔膜的作用。
除了正极、负极和隔膜外,锂二次电池通常还包含含锂盐的非水电解质。
所述含锂盐的非水电解质包括非水电解质和锂。作为非水电解质,可以使用非水电解质溶液、有机固体电解质、无机固体电解质等。
非水电解质溶液的具体实例包括非质子有机溶剂如N-甲基-2-吡咯烷酮、碳酸亚丙酯、碳酸亚乙酯、碳酸亚丁酯、碳酸二甲酯、碳酸二乙酯、γ-丁内酯、1,2-二甲氧基乙烷、2-甲基四氢呋喃、二甲基亚砜、1,3-二氧戊环、甲酰胺、二甲基甲酰胺、二氧戊环、乙腈、硝基甲烷、甲酸甲酯、乙酸甲酯、磷酸三酯、三甲氧基甲烷、二氧戊环衍生物、环丁砜、甲基环丁砜、1,3-二甲基-2-咪唑烷酮、碳酸亚丙酯衍生物、四氢呋喃衍生物、醚、丙酸甲酯和丙酸乙酯等。
无机固体电解质的具体实例包括锂的氮化物、卤化物和硫酸盐如Li3N、LiI、Li5NI2、Li3N-LiI-LiOH、LiSiO4、LiSiO4-LiI-LiOH、Li2SiS3、Li4SiO4、Li4SiO4-LiI-LiOH、Li3PO4-Li2S-SiS2,等等。
锂盐是容易溶解于非水电解质的材料,并且其实例包括LiCl、LiBr、LiI、LiClO4、LiBF4、LiB10Cl10、LiPF6、LiCF3SO3、LiCF3CO2、LiAsF6、LiSbF6、LiAlCl4、CH3SO3Li、CF3SO3Li、(CF3SO2)2NLi、氯硼烷锂、低级脂族羧酸锂、四苯基硼酸锂、氨基锂,等等。
另外,为了改善充/放电特性、阻燃性等,可以向非水电解质中添加吡啶、亚磷酸三乙酯、三乙醇胺、环醚、乙二胺、正甘醇二甲醚、六甲基磷酸三酰胺、硝基苯衍生物、硫、醌亚胺染料、N-取代的唑烷酮、N,N-取代的咪唑烷、乙二醇二烷基醚、铵盐、吡咯、2-甲氧基乙醇、三氯化铝等。任选地,为了赋予不燃性,还可以添加含卤素的溶剂如四氯化碳或三氟乙烯等。还可以添加二氧化碳气体以改善高温储存特性。
公开的实施方式
下文中,将参照实施例对本公开进行更详细地说明。以下实施例仅是用于说明性目的而不是为了限制本公开的范围。
实施例1-1:正极的制造
制备具有12μm的厚度和2.4%的伸长率的铝箔作为正极集电器。
此外,将作为正极活性材料的LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2(平均粒径:6μm)、作为粘结剂的聚偏二氟乙烯(PVDF)和作为导电材料的超导电乙炔炭黑(Denka black)以93:4:3的重量比加入作为溶剂的N-甲基吡咯烷酮(NMP)中,以制备用于形成正极活性材料层的浆料。
将用于形成正极活性材料层的浆料涂布在铝箔的两个表面上,并进行干燥和辊压以获得具有120μm的厚度的正极活性材料层。正极活性材料层具有27%的辊压孔隙率。
完成的正极具有1.17%的伸长率。
实施例1-2:二次电池的制造
制备具有10μm的厚度的铜箔作为负极集电器。
将作为负极活性材料的天然石墨、作为粘结剂的SBR和CMC以及作为导电材料的超导电乙炔炭黑以97:2:1的重量比加入到作为溶剂的水中以制备用于形成负极活性材料层的浆料。
将用于形成负极活性材料层的浆料涂布在负极集电器的两个表面上,并进行干燥和辊压以获得负极。
将由聚乙烯制成的隔膜插入负极与正极之间以提供电极组件,随后将电极组件放入袋中,然后向其中加入含有碳酸亚乙酯(EC):碳酸二甲酯(DMC):碳酸甲乙酯(EMC)=3:4:3和1M LiPF6的电解质以获得袋型单电池。
实施例2-1:正极的制造
除了孔隙率为31%之外,以与实施例1-1相同的方式获得正极。完成的正极具有1.35%的伸长率。
实施例2-2:二次电池的制造
除了使用实施例2-1的正极之外,以与实施例1-2相同的方式制造二次电池。
实施例3-1:正极的制造
除了活性材料的平均粒径为10μm之外,以与实施例1-1相同的方式获得正极。完成的正极具有1.48%的伸长率。
实施例3-2:二次电池的制造
除了使用实施例3-1的正极之外,以与实施例1-2相同的方式制造二次电池。
比较例1-1:正极的制造
除了使用具有15μm的厚度和2.9%的伸长率的铝箔之外,以与实施例1-1相同的方式获得正极。完成的正极具有1.73%的伸长率。
比较例1-2:二次电池的制造
除了使用比较例1-1的正极之外,以与实施例1-2相同的方式制造二次电池。
比较例2-1:正极的制造
除了活性材料的平均粒径为14μm之外,以与实施例1-1相同的方式获得正极。完成的正极具有1.95%的伸长率。
比较例2-2:二次电池的制造
除了使用比较例2-1的正极之外,以与实施例1-2相同的方式制造二次电池。
试验例:钉子穿透试验
将实施例1-2至3-2和比较例1-2和2-2的各二次电池在25℃、4.15V下充分充电,并使用直径3mm的钉子穿透电池的中心。然后,观察各电池是否发生起火。在此,将钉子的穿透速率设定为80mm/秒。
结果示于下表1中。

Claims (4)
1.一种二次电池用正极,其包含正极集电器和设置在所述正极集电器的至少一个表面上的正极活性材料层,
其中所述正极具有0.6%~1.5%的伸长率,所述伸长率根据ISO527测定,
所述伸长率为纵向方向上的伸长率和横向方向上的伸长率的算术平均数,
所述正极活性材料具有4μm~6μm的平均粒径,并且
所述正极活性材料层在辊压之后具有27%~35%的孔隙率。
2.根据权利要求1所述的二次电池用正极,其中,
所述正极集电器具有6μm~20μm的厚度。
3.根据权利要求1所述的二次电池用正极,其中,
所述正极集电器为铝箔。
4.一种二次电池,其包含权利要求1至3中任一项所限定的正极、负极和置于所述正极与所述负极之间的隔膜。
