Description

Taxi payment system and method

The present invention relates to payment methods for taxis and other modes of transport. More specifically, it relates to the secure use of cashless payments.

Background technique

In the field of rented vehicles or taxis, there is a need to accept non-cash payments in addition to cash payments.

Figure 1 shows the components of a typical meter system installed in a vehicle. A taxi meter 100 is used together with a receipt printer 101 and the two units are connected by a wired cable 102 . The cost of a ride depends on the distance traveled, the time it takes, road tolls and other service surcharges, and taxes. To calculate the total fare, the taximeter 100 is connected to a sensor 103 on the transport system to calculate the distance traveled and the time spent in driving/waiting. The taximeter is also connected to the vacancy status system 104 to indicate whether the taxi is vacant, hired or rested.

Currently, most taximeters are hardwired into the taxi in a manner that cannot be easily removed, relocated, or modified. A taxi meter system includes the meter, payment terminal and any other peripherals. In other cases, taxi drivers can obtain their own payment terminals from companies such as Square. There is no connection between the terminal and the meter. Taxi drivers must enter the amount used for the transaction in a payment app or payment terminal.

Currently, fees are calculated based on travel distance, waiting times, tolls and other service charges. The integration of cashless payments into rental vehicles or taxis is not done in the most efficient manner. Adding additional charges can be a manual process that is not transparent to customers and has too many possibilities for error.

There is also a need for a payment system that can easily integrate with existing taxi meters and provide other additional features. The payment terminal needs to be paired, and then communicate with the taxi meter, so that the transaction amount is sent from the meter to the payment terminal.

The interface unit 201 can connect to the payment terminal 200 including an access point by using the generated SSID and password.

In other embodiments, the secret can be read from a QR code image. The payment terminal 200 can read the secret by scanning the QR code image. The QR code can be a sticker that is adhered or otherwise mounted inside the taxi. Alternatively, the QR code may be displayed by a display unit such as an LCD or other display on the dashboard.

In normal operation, after taking a taxi, the final fare is calculated by the taximeter 100 . This charge amount is sent by the fare meter 100 to the interface unit 201 via the connection 202 . The interface unit 201 sends the fee amount to the payment terminal 200 through the connection 203 . Upon receipt of the fee amount, the payment application on the payment terminal 200 will be launched or otherwise executed to begin the payment process. Drivers or passengers can add surcharges and tips accordingly.

Passengers can choose a payment method and provide their payment method, such as a credit card.
