The back assembly 18 also includes a substantially pliable back shell 108 comprising a top end portion 110, a bottom end portion 112 and a pair of side portions 114 which are respectively connected to the top end portion 92, the bottom end portion 94 of the peripheral frame 90. and lateral portion 96, and as described below. The back shell 108 also includes a plurality of slats 116 extending between the lateral portions 114, vertically spaced from one another, and defining a plurality of slots 118 therebetween. In assembly, the back shell 108 ( FIG. 12 ) is attached to the peripheral frame 90 in such a way that zones or regions of different elasticity that are vertically spaced apart from each other are defined for the back shell 108 . In particular, the back shell 108 is attached to the peripheral frame 90 such that a top region 120 and a bottom region 122 of the back shell 108 are fixed relative to the peripheral frame 90 and a third region 124 of the back shell 108 is fixed relative to the peripheral frame. 90 is restrained in the forward direction, and the fourth region 126 of the back shell 108 is free to separate from the peripheral frame 90 in the forward direction, wherein the dotted line shows the bent state of the back shell 108 . More particularly, and shown most clearly in FIGS. 13A and 13B , the top portion 92 of the peripheral frame 90 includes a plurality of upwardly extending hooks 130 integral with the top portion 92 and spaced apart from each other across the top portion. portion 92, and the top portion 110 of the back shell 108 includes a plurality of downwardly extending flexible elastic loops 132 integral with the top portion 110, wherein the hooks 130 are engaged with the loops 132, Thereby, during engagement, the ring 132 is caused to flex in a direction 133 and fixedly secures the top end portion 110 of the back shell 108 to the top end portion 92 of the peripheral frame 90 . As shown most clearly in FIG. 12 , the back shell 108 includes a pair of integral tongue members 134 located at the junction of the side portion 114 and the bottom end portion 112 , wherein the tongue members 134 are passed through, for example, bolts 136 . The size of the recess 142 located in the third region 124 is also adjusted to allow the hook 140 to be displaced laterally in the direction 146 within the recess 142 so that the lateral portion 114 of the back shell 108 is relative to the outer periphery. The lateral portions 96 of the frame 90 are curved inwardly, thereby, correspondingly, increasing the flexibility and compatibility of the back shell 108 in the rearward direction 148 relative to the peripheral frame 90 . The lateral portions 114 of the back shell 108 located within the fourth region 126 are not fastened to the lateral portions 96 of the peripheral frame 90 such that, relative to the peripheral frame 90 , the back shell 108 is positioned in the lateral direction 146 and in the direction Compatibility and flexibility in the rear direction 148 is maximized. Thus, the movement of the first and second regions 120, 122 of the back shell 108 relative to the peripheral frame 90 is limited, the third region 124 makes the back shell 108 have limited compatibility with respect to the peripheral frame 90 and the fourth region 126 allows for maximum flexion of the back shell 108 relative to the peripheral frame 90 .

Reference numeral 18b (FIG. 1 IB) generally indicates another embodiment of a backrest assembly. Overall, the seat shell 30 is guided linearly. The support plate 252 includes L-shaped guide portions 290 (FIG. 22) received in the support member 291, which are received in corresponding inwardly opening slots 292 so that as the seat assembly moves between the retracted and extended positions Moving between G and H, the guide portion 290 of the support plate 252 is guided within the slot 292 .

Alternatively, a removable stop member 293 may be secured to the underside of the seat shell 30 in a position such that the stop member abuts a portion 295 of the support plate 251, thereby limiting the seat assembly 16 from the extended position. The distance traveled to the retracted position prevents the seat assembly 16 from moving to the rearmost position. In the example shown, the stop member 293 is secured to the seat shell 30 via screws 297, requiring the use of tools for installation and removal.

Each armrest assembly 20 ( FIGS. 3 , 24 and 25 ) is vertically adjustable between a raised position I and a lowered position J, and includes a tubular support 300 configured for attachment to the chair 10, nestedly located An armrest assembly 302 in the tubular support and a height adjustment mechanism 304 slidably received in the armrest assembly. When the armrest assembly 302 is inserted into the second arm portion 312, the lower portion of the sleeve 320 passes through the lower opening 316 and is visible. As the armrest assembly is adjusted vertically upward, the visible portion of the sleeve becomes less. The groove 318 and the lower opening 316 are on opposite sides of the second arm portion 312 .

366。Armrest assembly 302 is nestably received within tubular support 300 and includes sleeve 320 , post 321 , and may include support 322 . The first side 324 may include an aperture 328 adjacent a lower end of the first side. Adjacent the top of the first side 324 is an opening 330 adapted to receive an operable member 370 of the actuation rod 334 . The sleeve 320 tapers outwardly at the top to provide an armrest support 336 . The second side 326 of the sleeve 320 includes a rectangular aperture 338 at the lower end of the second side. On either side of the aperture 338 are vertical ribs 340, while a second vertical rib 341 is aligned with one of the vertical ribs 340, thereby increasing the overall effective length of the aligned and cooperating ribs 340, 341 , and preferably provides a ratio of length l to width w of at least 3:1, preferably at least 10:1, thereby reducing forward and backward movement of the armrest assembly 302 within the tubular support 300. Referring to Figures 25 and 26, the post 321 is rectangular with a lip 342 on its top end and a tongue 344 on its bottom end. The pillar also includes a first vertical surface 346 and a second vertical surface 348 . The first vertical surface 346 includes a series of positionally arranged stops 350 and fastening apertures 352 (FIG. 27). Fastening aperture 352 extends completely through post 321 to second vertical surface 348 . The post 321 is matably received in the recess 318 of the second arm portion 312 with a second vertical surface 348 abutting the second arm portion 312 . The fastening device is inserted through the fastening aperture 319 and into the fastening aperture 352 to fasten the column 321 in the groove 318 . Alternatively, it is contemplated that the post 321 is not a separate component fastened to the groove 318 but is molded into the second arm portion 312 . When the sleeve 320 is inserted into the second arm portion 312, the first vertical surface 346 of the post 321 abuts the second side 326 of the sleeve. Additionally, the stop 350 on the first vertical surface 346 of the post 321 covers the aperture 338 of the second side 326 of the sleeve 320 . The vertical ribs 340, 341 on the second side 326 of the sleeve 320 match the vertical grooves 354 of the posts 321 so that when the sleeve is adjusted vertically, the positionally arranged stops 350 Aperture 338 still maintains its position. The support 322 is positioned on the sleeve 320 by a vertical strip 362 abutting the first side 324 of the sleeve 320 such that the loop 360 wraps around the sleeve 320 . The post 321 fits in a space 366 at the end 364 of the collar. A bearing 322 is secured within the second arm portion 312 and functions to limit the horizontal movement of the sleeve within the tubular support.

392。The height adjustment mechanism 304 includes an actuation lever 368 that includes an operating member 370 , a locking member 372 and a spring 374 . In the example shown, the operating member 370 is located on top of the actuation rod 368 and is generally perpendicular to the elongated portion 378 of the actuation rod 368 . As shown, the operating member 370 is a lever, however it is contemplated that a button or a pull ring could be used. Attached to the operating member 370 is a flange 380 . On the other side of the flange 380 is a ledge 382 with a protrusion 384 . When the adjustable mechanism 304 is slidably engaged with the armrest assembly 302 , the actuating rod 368 is positioned inside the sleeve 320 and the operating member 370 is positioned through the aperture 330 . One end of spring 374 is placed over protrusion 384 and the opposite end of spring 374 is placed over protrusion 386 below plate 306 . Located at the bottom of the actuator rod 334 ( FIG. 33 ) are two angled ramps 388 . The ramp 388 prevents the locking member 372 from falling to the bottom of the sleeve 320 . Above each ramp 388 is at least one angled surface, preferably a pair of angled surfaces 390 . Between the pair of angled surfaces 390 is an angled wedge 392 .

As shown most clearly in FIGS. 28-30 , locking member 372 includes teeth 394 that selectively matably engage with stops 390 above post 321 . Locking member 372 also includes an angled surface 396 that mates with angled wedge 392 . The locking member 372 also includes at least one pair, and preferably two pairs of lateral followers 398 that releasably engage matingly with the two pairs of angled surfaces 390 .

The height adjustment mechanism 304 is slidably engaged in the sleeve 320 . When in the locked position, locking member 372 of height adjustment mechanism 304 is positioned such that teeth 394 of the locking member extend through aperture 338 of sleeve 320 and selectively mate with stop 350 of post 321 . The actuating lever 368 is located above the locking member 372, the angled wedge 392 matingly engages the angled surface 396, and the angled surface 390 releasably matingly engages the lateral follower 398 (Figs. and 32A).

To adjust the height of the armrest vertically, the operating member 370 is lifted upwards, which in turn compresses the spring 374 . When the spring is compressed, the angled surface 390 of the actuator rod 368 lifts upwards and presses against the lateral follower 398, which causes the teeth 394 to retract into the sleeve 320, thereby moving the locking member 372 out of the way. out of engagement with the stop 350 (Figs. 33 and 33A). Once the locking member 372 is disengaged from the stop 350, the armrest can be adjusted vertically up or down to a desired height.

To re-engage the lock 372 and re-lock the armrest assembly to the selected position, the operating member 370 is released, thereby decompressing the spring 374 at the top of the actuation rod 368 . Decompression of the spring causes the inclined wedge 392 to slide into mating engagement with the inclined surface 396 . (Figures 34, 34A, 35 and 35A). With mating engagement of angled wedge 392 and angled surface 396 , lock tooth 394 again extends through aperture 338 and selectively mates with stop 350 of post 321 .
