Abstract

Description

Atlas page and its production

technical field

The present invention generally relates to improvements to photobooks, such as photo books, and more particularly to improvements to photobook pages to facilitate placement and/or display of photographs and/or memos.

Background technique

There is a continuing need for improvements to such booklets and/or book pages to facilitate or enhance their ease of use. For example, there is a need for a method of easily and quickly placing photos on an album page, and of removing the placed photo without damaging the album page or the photo. There is also a need for displaying or placing memos and/or title pieces on such improved book pages.

Contents of the invention

A primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved arrangement which fulfills the above needs.

The improved album pages designed in accordance with the present invention for inclusion in an album to hold at least one additional display sheet, such as a photograph, include combinations of the following:

a) first and second narrow, straight and elongated spacers extending longitudinally in spaced relation to each other across said pages and projecting from a plane defined by said pages,

b) and at least one fastener on said pages and between said spacers to protectively retain at least one additional sheet between said spacers,

c) and wherein said first spacer comprises a first portion of said page defining a Z-fold,

d) And wherein said second spacer comprises a second portion of said page defining an overlying folded portion and a concealed intermediate folded portion.

As will be seen, a first such spacer generally comprises a first portion of said book page, which itself defines an elongated Z-shaped folded portion. Such a Z-fold preferably has upper and lower portions connected by angled tabs which may be glued to one or both of the upper and lower parts of the Z-fold. A second such spacer typically includes a second portion of the book page that itself defines an overlying fold and a concealed middle fold between the overlying fold and the overlying fold. extending between a portion of the sheet that underlies the overlying folded portion and the intermediate folded portion.

Another object is to provide a spacer extending generally in parallel relationship to each other perpendicular to and along said album pages and spaced laterally so that photographs can be placed protectively between the spacers between. Thus, spacers are used to keep successively closed album pages spaced apart from each other, and photographs are placed protectively in pockets formed between such pages so that, when the album is closed, the pages are not will squeeze the photo.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide a mounting for photographs or other display sheets in the form of adhesive material on album pages between the spacers. A peelable cover strip is then provided to protectively cover the adhesive layer until a photograph or other display sheet is applied, ie mounted, in place. The cover strip preferably has a free end portion that is offset from the adhesive layer so that the free end portion can be grasped to enable quick and easy peeling of the cover strip from the adhesive. As mentioned, there may be multiples of such adhesive strips and cover strips between the elongated spacers on the album page so that the combined thickness of the adhesive layer and additional print does not exceed The height of the spacers to protect the photos when the booklet is closed.

The present invention also provides a first album page for inclusion in an album to hold at least one additional display sheet, comprising a combination of:

a) a plurality of narrow, straight and elongated spacers extending longitudinally in spaced relation to each other on said page and projecting from a plane defined by said page,

b) one or more fasteners on said pages and between said spacers to protectively retain said at least one additional page between said spacers,

c) a further album page kept frontally spaced apart from said first album page by said spacers, said at least one display page being kept protectively edgewise between said spacers , the dimension of the spacer towards the further page exceeds the thickness of the displayed page,

d) One of the spacers has a Z-folded configuration and the other of the spacers includes a folded configuration.

Detailed ways

In Figures 1 and 2, an album page 10 is adapted for inclusion in an album and is designed to hold additional display sheets. One such page is indicated by reference numeral 11 and may include a photograph protectively mounted on the page.

A plurality of narrow, straight, elongated spacers extend longitudinally across the page spaced apart from each other and project from a plane 12 defined by the main area of the page (see Figure 2). Two such spacers 13 and 14 are shown extending longitudinally and along the page while being spaced apart from each other transversely. As shown in the example in FIG. 2 , the two spacers protrude outwardly from the plane 12 to a certain extent to enable the photo 11 to be placed protectively between the two spacers. The overall height of the spacer 13 from the plane 12 is denoted h ₁ and the overall height of the spacer 14 from the plane 11 is denoted h ₂ . _h1 and _h2 are usually equal or substantially equal in size.

A preferred way to reduce the manufacturing cost of the spacers is to include them within the page as part of the page itself. The spacer 13 therefore preferably comprises the first portion of the page 10 and defines a Z-fold. The Z-fold has an upper planar portion 17 and a lower planar portion 18 connected by an intermediate inclined tab 19 sandwiched between the planar portions 17 and 18 . Figure 8 shows its manufacturing steps, in which the page 10 is first pushed with the push plates 20 and 21 and folded at its edges 22 and 23 to form the flaps 19, then the push plates are withdrawn and a normal force 24 is applied and 25 compress the flap 19 between the Z-fold planar portions 17 and 18 to the compressed state shown in FIG. 2 . Glue or adhesive is typically applied, eg, delivered by the surfaces of push plates 20 and 21, thereby holding or adhering the Z-folded portion in a compressed or compacted state. The push plates 20 and 21 may include rollers traveling in the longitudinal direction of the Z-shaped folded portion to gradually form the Z-shaped folded portion in the longitudinal direction. This determines the height h ₁ of the Z-fold from the plane 12 .

The second spacer 14 generally comprises the second portion of the page 10 and defines an overlying portion or folded portion 28 , a lower portion 29 and an intermediate folded portion or flap 30 . Fig. 10 shows the intermediate steps of forming 28, 29 and 30, wherein, by forming the folded portion 28 on the support bar 31, the bent portion 32 is formed; and by forming the folded portion 30 on the support bar 31, the bent portion is formed 33. After the rods 31 and 32 have been withdrawn, force is applied in the direction indicated by arrows 34, 35 and 36, and the flap 30 is folded protectively and sandwiched between 28 and 29 and compresses the part as shown in FIG. displayed status. Another feature of the invention is the provision of one or more retainers on the pages, positioned between two spacers, to secure one or more additional sheets protectively disposed between the spacers. In Fig. 1, a protective cover strip 45 is used as a fastener material, such as an adhesive layer 52 employed on the page, to hold a display sheet 11, such as a photograph as indicated above, in place. The display sheet 11 is partially torn to reveal 45 , while 45 is also torn to reveal 52 . The cover strip 45 is usually peeled off the adhesive layer 52 to expose the latter, said display sheet being squeezed when placed between the spacers 13 and 14 . This placement is shown in Figure 2. Illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 is a modified cover strip 45a having an end 45aa offset from the adhesive layer 52a at one of its ends. This makes it easy to grasp the free end 45aa so that the covering strip 45a can be peeled off from the adhesive layer.

FIG. 1 also shows that the album page 10 has a side extension 60 that protrudes toward a widthwise direction 62 away from the two spacers 13 and 14 on one lateral side of the spacer 13 to define the MEMO surface. 63. As shown, the face 63 is located between the edge 10a of the page 10 and the spacer 13 and has a uniform width along its length.

FIG. 7 is similar to FIG. 1 , except that self-adhesive glue is provided or applied on the main area of the page surface indicated by reference numeral 70 between the spacers 13 and 14 . This facilitates press-fitting of photographs 71 on a large number of selected locations on the page. Figure description strip 72 may be applied at a number of different locations on surface 70 . Some captions can be overlaid with additional photos. The markings on 72 are used to identify or relate to 71 .

Claims (21)
