Abstract

The embossing of the foam layer is performed by pressing it against at least half of the circumference of the surface of a rotating, heated embossing roller. The surface of the support roller is kept at a temperature of 120 to 150 DEG C, and the contact pressure required for achieving the desired embossing effect is generated by tension in the carpet. The process permits the embossing of a foam layer already laminated with a carpet, although the embossing temperatures usually used for the embossing of polyurethane materials lie above the softening point of the synthetic fibres contained in the carpet. By regulating the tension of the carpet, the contact pressure of the foam layer against the embossing roller, and consequently the depth of the embossing, can be varied. Further simple possibilities of variation are obtained by changing the temperature of the embossing roller surface in the specified region. For this case, the circumferential speed of the embossing roller, dependent on the roller diameter, is to be adapted correspondingly. This can take place by increasing or reducing its number of revolutions. It is also possible to vary the length of the contact zone which is passed through by the foam layer resting on the surface of the embossing roller.
