Description
Apparatus for checking the tightness of a wall, in particular a wall
showing welds.
The object of the present invention is an apparatus for checking the tightness of a wall, in particular of a wall having welds. This apparatus is characterized in that it comprises a sealed box having a bottom and side walls, these walls having at their free end a rim lined with an elastic cord, through which the box is intended to be applied in a watertight manner to the wall whose tightness must be checked, a vacuum pump being connected to the body to create a vacuum in its interior during the verification of the tightness, a control instrument making it possible to determine whether the depression continues.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the device in use.
Fig. 2 is, on a reduced scale, a horizontal section along the line II-II of FIG. 1.
The device shown has a case
A, formed by four side walls 1, 2, 3, 4 adjoining in a sealed manner to a bottom 5. The body A is preferably metallic and the lower edges of its side walls end in a rim 6 adjoining the body , for example by welding.
The shape of the walls 1, 2, 3, 4 and of the bottom 5 of box A will be determined according to the shape of the wall (boiler, tank, etc.) whose welds are to be checked. In the event that it is a question of monitoring what is happening inside the crate, the walls could be at least partly transparent.
In addition, the interior of the crate could be illuminated when it comes to observing the phenomena that occur in it.
In the edge 6 of the embodiment shown is fixed in a sealed manner an elastic cord 7, for example in rubber, the section of which is as shown in FIG. 1, that is to say that it has, in its middle part, a hollow 8 which is connected by a conduit 9 to a means intended to produce the vacuum, for example a small pump not shown in the drawing. A valve 1 (> is mounted on said pipe.
A vacuum pump, connected by a conduit 11 inside the box A, is intended to produce a vacuum in this location which tests the tightness of the object to be checked. On this pipe is placed a control device, for example a metal manometer 12 or another means, such as a curved tube in which the level of a liquid would vary according to the pressure which prevails inside the body A .
To check the tightness of a given object, for example of a weld bead 13 of a tank 14 (fig. 1), the case A is applied above the weld part to be checked, so that the elastic cord 7 is strongly applied over its entire length against the wall of the reservoir 14 and then a certain vacuum is created inside the hollow 8 of the elastic cord. By closing the valve 10, the box A is thus applied in a sealed manner to the wall to be tested. A vacuum is now made with a vacuum pump inside the body A. If the weld is tight, the needle of the pressure gauge does not move; if, on the other hand, the weld 13 is not waterproof, the needle goes back.
The leakproofness check can also extend to the walls of the object, thus making it possible to realize the degree of permeability of said object. When the rubber bead is hollow, it can be concluded with certainty that the air which enters the interior of the box A comes either from the weld. or the lack of sealing of the walls of the object. In any case, it cannot come from the elastic rim, because if it were the case, the box 9 would have already peeled off from the wall of the object to be tested before the vacuum was created inside. the box. This fact constitutes one of the main advantages of the apparatus described.
It should be noted that the vacuum inside the hollow 8 must be greater than the vacuum there inside the box A, so that there is always pressure on the rubber.
