Description
Additional patent to main patent No. 154507. Process for the production of a wetting agent, cleaning agent, emulsifying agent. suitable product. The main application describes a process for the preparation of a product suitable as a wetting agent, cleaning agent, emulsifier, etc., in which sulfoacetic acid is esterified in the carboxyl group with oleic alcohol.
It has now been found that a valuable product is obtained in a completely analogous manner if sulfoacetic acid in the carboxyl group is esterified with octodecyl alcohol. The octodecyl alcohol can be obtained, for example, by reducing oleic or stearic acid or their esters. The octodecyl alcohol can also be obtained by reducing animal or vegetable oils or fats, such as soybean oil, peanut oil, etc.
The esterification can take place in the usual way. It is expedient to heat the sulfoacetic acid with octodecyl alcohol to about 100 ° C., whereby it is advantageous to remove the water released during the esterification by applying a vacuum.
Instead of the free sulfoacetic acid, you can also use the monoalkali salt, for example the monosodium salt, which is easily obtained by neutralizing the aqueous solution of sulfoacetic acid with sodium hydroxide until the Congo acidic reaction disappears, with one equivalent of alkali, based on the sulfo group, is consumed. If the sodium salt obtained in this way is heated to about 180 ° C. with the equivalent amount of octodecyl alcohol, esterification occurs.
Instead of sulfoacetic acid, derivatives of sulfoacetic acid, for example the esters or halides, can also be used.
The compound produced in the manner described is a colorless product and, like the product obtained by the process of the main application, is particularly suitable as a detergent, emulsifier, wetting agent, etc. and can be used in many ways, especially in the textile industry Find.
Example: 162 parts of 1> ionosodium salt of sulfoacetic acid are heated with 270 parts of octodecyl alcohol to 200 ° C. for 8 hours with stirring, the water released during the esterification being removed from the reaction vessel by a stream of nitrogen away. A water-soluble, colorless product with good washing, cleaning and dispersing properties is formed, which can also be used, for example, as a plasticizer for rayon.
