Abstract
An exhaust gas purification catalyst and an exhaust gas purification method using the same which can effectively remove oxides of nitrogen in an exhaust gas containing a large amount of oxygen and reduce the amount of particulate materials formed in the exhaust gas under high temperature conditions. The catalyst comprises a catalytic component comprising copper, praseodymium, and yttrium. The method comprises bringing an exhaust gas having a molar ratio of hydrocarbons to oxides of nitrogen (hydrocarbon/nitrogen oxide) of 0.5 to 30 into contact with the above catalyst to purify the exhaust gas. This enables oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust gas to be efficiently removed by reduction while preventing the oxidation of sulfur dioxide in the exhaust gas.
