Abstract
A method of impregnating a polymer plastic plug with wood preservative. The method includes the step of introducing wood preservative into a polymer plastic resin prior to forming the polymer plastic resin into a polymer plastic plug. In accordance with the teachings of this method wood preservative is present throughout the polymer plastic plug that is formed. This wood preservative leaches out into the wood every time the polymer plastic plug is exposed to moisture above its naturally occurring moisture content.
Description
TITLE OF THE INVENTION:
Polymer plastic plug impregnated with wood preservative and method for making the same.
NAMES) OF INVENTOR(S):
Wesley James Wall FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a preservative impregnated, polymer plastic plug for sealing preservative chemicals in wood, and method of making the same.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Preservative chemicals are placed into wood structures, such as wood poles, posts and pilings, by drilling a hole.
After insertion of the preservative chemicals, the hole is sealed by means of a plug. If this plug is contaminated from dust, dirt, water or airborne spores during field use, it can serve as an initial inoculation for decay onset in the wood structure.
When wood plugs are used, an industry practise has been adopted of dip treating the plugs with a 2% copper napthenate preservative solution. This solution protects against the accidental transfer of spores by the plug during field use.
United States Patent 5,114,032 discloses a reusable polymer plastic plug for sealing preservative in wood. The plug has threads that allow the plug to be inserted without rotation by hammering, but requires rotation for extraction from the hole. One inherent disadvantage of the reusable plastic plug is that there is no manner of introducing wood preservative into the plastic resin out of which the plug is made. Polymer plastic plugs cannot be dip treated in the same manner as wood plugs are presently treated.

2 SUMr2ARY OF THE INVENTION
What is required is a method of making a polymer plastic plug impregnated with wood preservative and a polymer plastic plug made in accordance with the method.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of impregnating a polymer plastic plug with wood preservative. The method includes the step of introducing wood preservative into a polymer plastic resin prior to forming the polymer plastic resin into a polymer plastic plug. In accordance with the teachings of this method wood preservative is present throughout the polymer plastic plug. This wood preservative leaches out into the wood every time the polymer plastic plug is exposed to moisture above its naturally occurring moisture content.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a polymer plastic plug which includes a polymer plastic body impregnated with a wood preservative chemical.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and other features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description in which reference is made to the appended drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a flow diagram illustrating the steps of a preferred method.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The preferred method of impregnating polymer plastic plug with wood preservative will now be described with reference to FIGURE 1.
Referring to FIGURE 1, the preferred method of making a wood preservative impregnated polymer plastic plug is to form the plug from plastic resin into which has been introduced wood preservative. Polymer plastic resin 30 is placed in a heating

3 vessel 32 and heated to its melting point so that it becomes liquid. A wood preservative active ingredient 34, such as copper or boron, is introduced from a separate supply vessel 36 into polymer plastic resin 30 in heating vessel 32. Wood preservative active ingredient 34 is thoroughly mixed into polymer plastic resin 30 by means of an impeller 38 or other means of dispersal of the wood preservative throughout the liquid plastic resin 30. A stream of wood preservative impregnated liquid polymer plastic resin 40 is then introduced into to a former 42, in which wood preservative impregnated liquid polymer plastic resin 40 is formed into a polymer plastic plug impregnated with wood preservative 44. The forming of the polymer plastic plug is preformed in a manner similar to existing practices used with unmodified plastic resin.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined in the Claims.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined in the Claims.
