Abstract
The apparatus for displaying a virtual environ-ment on a video display such as a head mounted dis-play (23), has a position processor (11) for generating a visual orientation signal indicating a visual orientation of the video display with respect to the virtual envi-ronment, and an image generator (20) for generating a series of component images of the virtual environment for the visual orientation. The image generator (20) re-ceives the visual orientation signals. Any change in the visual orientation signal from a time when orientation signal was used by the image generator (20) to generate each component image and a time of display of each component image on the video display (16) is detected to produce an offset shift signal. An image shifting de-vice shifts the image on the display (16) in response to the offset shift signal, so as to improve the display of the virtual environment. Field sequential color video and temporal grey scale video can be improved using the apparatus, in addition to other video systems with a transport delay and active variable motion which is difficult to predict.
